Picking out a general doctor + dentist

Long story short, I'm new to NY (Astoria in Queens), I just got my health/dental insurance cards, and I want to go for a checkup and all that (probably have at least 5 cavities right now), but I'm having trouble picking out a place. I mean, there are a plenthora of doctors and dentists near me, but I have no idea who's decent. At least with hair cuttery places if you get a bad haircut it only lasts for a month, a quack doctor would screw you over pretty thoroughly.

So I'm hoping that somebody can recommend a family doctor/dentist, or recommend a way to find reliable healthcare people - is there some kind of a doctor listing with patient feedback comments?

there are some online ratings for doctors and dentists, though they can be rather sparse. For instance:

    DROOgle

You could always try word of mouth. Ask around and see who's good.

A really bad doctor can screw you up, but I can't imagine any really being that bad. If you think something could be better, it doesn't hurt to try someone new a few months later.

Yeah, try asking your co-workers who they see. Also a lot of general practitioners will let you do an appointment to just meet them and see if you like what they have to offer you.
