My Laptop Keeps Freezing Up

My laptop keeps freezing. I have no idea why. I just had the harddrive replaced two weeks ago due to some failure, and I don't want to go through that whole thing again. I'm on it right now, but I'm running safe mode.
A couple minutes after starting up, all the programs freeze. I can't close any of them and I can't open any new programs. I can usually still minimize or maximize windows, move around my cursor, and select between the programs that are currently running. This is getting to be really annoying, so any help would be appreciated. This started happening last night. The last time it was working properly, I was watching a DVD. I finished watching the movie and shut down. When I tried to use it again last night, it started this whole "freeze up after five minutes" bit.
I am running Windows Vista, Premium Home Edition.

How many sticks of RAM does it have? If it has multiple sticks, take one out, test for a while with that, if there's no improvement, swap those sticks. If you still see no improvement, swap the RAM slot.
If you see an improvement with one RAM stick, your memory could be at fault, in which case you need to replace that stick. If you see an improvement from swapping RAM slots, then it could be the slot, which is a new motherboard job.
