Ultratech is a very powerful megacorporation (entities which, in this future setting, replaced all governments) which organizes a tournament called Killer Instinct. Along with regular participants, experimental creatures created by Ultratech also fight in the tournament. Ultratech also discovers a technology to make bridges between dimensions, and to also release from this dimensional prison a two-headed monster called Eyedol, an ancient warrior that was locked away along with his rival.
Played the arcade and SNES versions of this a ton, played the KI2 arcade build (and a beta build wtf?) a fair bit, and blew out my KI:gold cart. Three sealed copies of the SNES version with killer cuts are in my games drawer.
Needless to say, much like Battletoads, this is straight up stupid finger mashing fun.

I miss Cinder. Why the fuck did they take him out in KI: Gold?
Killer Cuts is a soundtrack album released and packaged with the video game Killer Instinct on the Super Nintendo in 1995
Does anyone remember this? I still have mine when I bought SNES, it came bundled with the game
I bought that very same SNES bundle, and I remember having that soundtrack, but I can't for the life of me remember what was on it. I wonder what I did with it.
I loved the first game. I couldn't get into the second because some of the characters changed so much, notably Saberwulf. I think I played more Orchid and Jago than the wolfman, though.
I once fluked a huuuuuuuge combo with Jago that ended in Spinal being thrown into the air and not coming back down for 15-20 seconds.
It still annoys me that I wasn't fast enough to juggle him before he hit the ground, even though at the time my brother and I were just sitting there, amazed at what was happening on screen. Too stunned by the awesome to move.
Also, there was a time when that Killer Cuts CD was all I listened to.
By far my favorite fighting game that has ever been made. The announcer voice overs alone made it worth it, I'd love to find some sound files of a few of his sayings. I owned this on SNES and KI2 on N64 and played the shit out of both of them. I was a huuuge Chief Thunder fan, I loved how his headress was part of his combo. I thought that was so cool at the time. Thanks for putting this thread up, it's a pretty good feeling logging into work on a Monday and before I even check my email I come here and find a KI thread, totally made my day.
Man I remember going to EB with 60 bucks wanting Mario RPG but that bitch was 80 dollars and my dad was all like, save more, and I was all FUCK YOU DAD I WANT THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS! And it was killer instinct and I listened to that soundtrack non-stop all the time. I also played the fuck out of that game and the only ultra combo I ever pulled off was cinder's because I could use a turbo controller to just mash forward and buttons wildly and it would magically do an ultra combo.
I have 3 copies of KI sitting in my SNES games box under the coffee table. I may play this after work tonight.
I got this game for my birthday when I was 8 years old, and pretty much loved it. Pretty much 100% it, every difficulty on every character. I don't remember how I found the secret character though, as I didn't have internet until much later. I liked the black cardridge, it stood out on my collection(beside Maximum Carnage) and I still have the CD in my CD stack.
Mashing buttons and getting ultra combos angered my brother like mad. My favorite character was Jago although I never mastered how to use his sword. Good game! :^:
In high school me and my friends would always head over at a buddy's house and play this, friggin Tusk and Jago were amasing "Daaahhhh!!" The game was so hilarious and we played with the unlimited energy cheat on. It was soooo brutal. My thumbs don't actually have any feeling any more and it is from this game

Fuck yeah, Maximum Carnage was the shit
also i remember looking forward from coming home from school to strictly play this game along with watching fox kids shows like goosebumps, life with louie and x-men
Man, I played the shit out of this game...i think my thumbs are still repairing themselves. I still have that Killer Cuts soundtrack somewhere...but fuck Eyedol man, fuck him with a pogo stick.
i used to know how to do some crazy infinite combos with the skeleton guy and with the two headed guy in the arcade. wouldnt mind playing some rounds of this, assuming i ever came across a machine in the wild.
I wonder why they don't try to make a current gen sequel to this game. The fighting genre is still alive and well, and when KI came out it was the shit. There were literally line ups at my arcade to play it.

EGM's Quarterman section claims that they are making a sequel. I think.

I've read just the opposite, where Rare said KI was done for good........I hope that's not true.
KI1 was alright, didn't play it too much, but played KI2/Gold a ton. The game is super broken, but it is tons of fun and (in the arcade version at least) I still like the FMV backgrounds. The finishing moves were super lame, but hilarious.
are you guys nuts, a new KI would be an abortion. the game was gimmicky crap from the get go, dont let your nostalgia cloud things.
In the world of fighting games, this series was always the hawaiian-shirt-wearing-fat-guy to everyone else's dockers-and-vest-with-polo shirt.
I mean, when was the last time you saw anyone talking about frame differentials with this series? It just doesn't happen. And that's what makes it great.
I would have but people consider me biased for some reason.
Anywho Riptor is the best character.
But without a monocle he is not terribly classy.
I remember back in the day watching the guy who worked at the arcade taking a break to play KI, picking Eyedol and doing infinite juggles or triple fireballs. SUPREME VICTORY was shown an awful lot, but nobody played until he beat the game.

Oh, that's cool. I guess this is just a KI1 appreciation then?
Also, Glacius was awesome.

Yeah, that was a weird finisher for a ninja.
I wish I could get that as a cell phone ring...or the sound when my computer starts.

How I came across all 3 is a mystery.
XBL - Follow Freeman
Guess which one I played.
My favorite Jago combo, from memory. Wind kick, shin-kicks, laser sword, shin-kicks, sword-uppercut. Could juggle afterward too if you wanted.
I also seem to recall that Saberwulf could do his rolling charge slashes by using B->F or F->B, which was odd.

Look at Glacius, or Sabrewulf crip-walking.
The graphics on this game still look good. Like action figures come to life.
