    Man my PS3 is getting alot of love lately. 3 racing games I think I'm going to buy for it ... Pure hits (today I think!) this week, Wipeout HD on the 25th and Motorstorm Pacific Drift at the end of October.

    My wallet is moaning in pain.

WipEout HD has left me agitated and dissatisfied because the crisp 1080p visuals and rock solid 60fps presentation have made me realise just how compromised the Great HD Gaming Revolution has been.

    We've become so accustomed to accepting 720p resolutions and mostly stable 30fps frame rates as the best we can expect that when something really does take full advantage of the display technology available, it can't help make everything else look like a half measure.

    In other words, WipEout HD looks f**king phenomenal.

    There are eight available tracks initially in Wipeout HD; these tracks are remastered high-definition versions of tracks from previous Wipeout games (hence the game title). Six of the tracks are from Wipeout Pure, and two are from Wipeout Pulse. All tracks will be able to be played in reverse and standard modes, much akin to the "black" and "white" modes of Wipeout Pulse.

    Wipeout Pure Tracks

    * Chenghou Project
    * Sol 2
    * Vineta K
    * Sebenco Climb
    * Anulpha Pass (from "Delta" expansion pack)
    * Ubermall (from "Gamma" expansion pack)

    Wipeout Pulse Tracks

    * Moa Therma
    * Metropia

    I just switched from my carbon powered Samsung HD Ready display to a human energy driven, 4D, 120fps Sony 40W4000 1080p display. After calibrating it a bit, I fired up WipEout HD and ZOMFG!!! I fainted. This is not just a game. This is a 1080p display killer app. Any sign of aliasing I could spot before disappeared. Not that it is completely absent, but it's so minor only the most extremist IQ whores would notice. Much, MUCH better than GT5P (which still shows plenty of aliasing on my new display compared to WipEout HD - not to mention the terrible tearing/frame drops). At 1080p, WipEout HD is still silky smooth. In 2 hrs of wowing playtime, I've noticed some *VERY* minor and *VERY* quick tearing occurring in ONE spot on TWO tracks, but nothing to even bother notifying. It's not like it cuts the screen in two for half a sec. Looks more like some IQ disturbance that lasts a couple of milliseconds. It's so irrelevant I can't even spot which part of the screen it actually cuts when it happens. And no, it does NOT occur during explosions or other crazy situations. Those remain unaffected. It's just in those spots I mentioned there. I don't even know why I'm reporting about it to be honest (lol).

    Anyways, this game turned me into a 1080p believer. It gave me that kind of feeling I used to have when looking at new arcade releases back in the days of Daytona USA. You know, that kind of "ZOMG!!! IT'S VIRTUAL REALITY!!" feeling. I'm floored. The amount of detail you can spot at 1080p is also incredible. I didn't realize before now how much I was missing at 720p (which still looks awesome mind you).

    So, in the end, I'd say from all the 1080p games I've tested (SSDHD, FLOW, GT5P, Eden etc), WipEout really stands out as the best you can get this gen at this time in terms of image quality and smoothness. Nothing touches it. NOTHING. Here is my mouth wide open Studio Liverpool. Do whatever you please with it! You deserve it.

    Sets made in Canada come with 100 hours of break in already done in the factory (I confirmed this directly with Panasonic Canada). For that reason I didn't bother with the traditional break in period I'd normally do with a new plasma.

    The first month or so I was fairly careful, now I play for hours without any worry at all. Occasionally I'll get image retention from static huds if I'm playing for hours (the top hud in Warhawk causes this sometimes, as does Catan), but flipping to HD Discovery channel washes any image retention away within seconds.

    I consider myself to just take the same reasonable precautions any plasma owner would do ... if I'm watching a program for several hours and it has a static colour station logo, then I may flip the channel for a few minutes, that sort of thing. Basically I've had no problems at all and the set itself is the best I've ever owned.

    I've got the Panasonic 42PZ77U ... antiglare works like a charm, picture is breathtaking in full 1080p with blu ray's. Hell even regular DVD's look amazing, the PS3 is upscales far better than the 360. When my buddies come over to watch football or hockey they are blown away by the pic quality ... I love Plasma TV's I'm really glad I went plasma instead of LCD. I owned CRT before this, and I feel Plasma is alot closer to the CRT experience than LCD.

    It's amazing really how many people have good sets but don't have them set up properly, using composite cable haha, not upgrading to HD cable (they THINK they are getting HD while watching regular cable haha), and not having the proper audio/visual equipment to really get the most out of their purchase.

    Anyways not meaning to hijack my own thread :P

    I think Wipeout HD is going to be the game to really show off 1080p gaming. If Sony's smart they might consider making a Wipeout HD console pack in the future ... honestly from what I've seen I think this game could be a system seller for alot of people.

    Dude, for twenty dollars this is a fucking steal. They could've charged forty (price of a PSP game) or at least 30, releasing at twenty dollars is a customer courtesy.

    BC rearmed comparison doesn't really make sense considering development times and visual value don't really match up. Wipeout HD is on a completely different level. Sorry things that cost a lot of money to make cost more than ten dollars, but before Digital Distribution the absolute minimum this game would be released at is 40.

    Anyway, really looking forward to this. I've been considering selling my PS3 (I just don't really use it, like, ever) but this is something that's made me want to hold onto it. Looking forward to learning Sixaxis controls.

    Yeah, only a publisher the size of Capcom could have put it out at that price, and they probably wrote off some of the costs as marketing for "Bionic Commando".

    Tycho touched on this a few weeks ago and I have to agree with him here...

    Considering the average geek shirt is say $35, a pitcher of (good) beer can go from $18-25, or that a single meal at Popeyes can run up to $10, bringing a game that features silky-smooth 1080p visuals at 60fps to an audience that may not have bought the PSP original, or may not have had the experience of playing a Wipeout game before (me) and charging a paltry 20 bucks? I mean, really dude.

    Factor in the cost of QA-testing/coding/project management/art assets etc., and the billions of little fuckers involved in the middle-management of anytype of game development, and $20 sounds positively delicious.

    I blow far more than twenty bucks on an average workday on disposable, single-use services (car wash, lunch, toll, parking, coffee, groceries) and here's a game with ridiculous replayability and "value" (whatever that term means in a post XBLA/PSN world) and people still gripe?
