Recipie for success: Couple of levels in Prison Management + Points in Polearms + Jousting Lance + Horse + Enemies = Profit
Jousting lance! I'm officially stealing this plan.
Also, is there somewhere I can look to see the differences between nations? I met an NPC who said that the Swadians had better knights than everyone else. Is that just flavor text, or do the factions have different troops?
Okay, so I already have a serial from the beta, but where can I download 1.0?
I don't think it's out yet.
Main page of the site isn't updated, but 1.003 is available on the forums. Of course, if you have a 4850 like me, then you're stuck running the game in DX7 mode.
Its been awhile since I played M&B and I don't remember ever hearing this, whats the reasoning here? Is it a problem with just the 4850 or all 4800 cards (or all ATI?)
8.4 Cats are the latest driver version that works properly w/ M&B. Unfortunately, 8.4 and below are too early for 4850/70 cards. Not sure which version of M&B this started in, but it's annoying as hell.
This game is fucking great. Last time I played it was beta 7 or 8, so this is a huuuuuge change for me. There's still nothing quite like hitting an archer in the face with a long axe as you ride by.
I really wish there was multiplayer though, even if it was LAN only to avoid major latency issues.
I've been playing on and off through the beta and just got the retail version. I'm glad I paid for it in beta since even though I love the game I don't think its really worth 40+ dollars.
Any ways, I only realized recently that it defaults to 1/2 damage? Or maybe it just scales when you suck? I dunno but I put it to normal damage and god the game is kicking my ass. When I used to play I would get to a point fairly quickly where all the fights were too easy, you could just run around on your horse picking off guys by yourself and basically defeat any number of guys by yourself. Now at times I start to charge into a fight just to get wacked by a random dude and knocked out in one hit!
Also, is it just me or did they make the computer assholes for the retail? When I used to get taken prisoner and escape I'd usually be able to just run away and the guys that just captured me wouldn't follow, but now the computers being a complete dick and every time I get out they charge me again and own me like 30v1 or whatever. Then they do it AGAIN, to the point where I'm naked haha. Deserters especially were giving me a bitch of a time toward the start of my game, where like 20 lancer deserters would attack my group of 40-50 newbish guys and mow us down, and then proceed to destroy me again and again.
It's kinda frustrating sometimes but I also think its a good thing, because now theres a lot more emphasis on building up your army first I guess so they can deal with it.
Maybe one day I'll put the AI from normal to hard or whatever too and see how badly that goes haha
I'm really digging this, so much to the point of that I ordered it off Amazon and going through with all sorts of characters and other little things to hold me over until it arrives (One-Man Army build = stupid fun). Only thing is, is there a way to make a lot of time pass quickly? I've got my little fief and'm building a school for it, but that takes (A) craploads of time even with the architect dude and (B) I really want to try and spend as much time as I can in my little domain 'til my liege calls for my service so it doesn't get sacked by every random asshole who wanders near.
Also, any plans for a Steampunk/Arcanum sort of mod? The idea of leading charges of steam-driven power armor-wearin' mechanical rifleman pleases me greatly.

You can either choose "Wait here for a while" while in a town, or hold down the spacebar while on the map. Ctrl+spacebar makes time move as fast as waiting in a town. You'll still consume food, though, so keep that in mind.
Goddamn I suck. I get up to having 25 or so soldiers, and then I invariably run into something that ruins me. The entire goddamn Nord army besieging a Swadian castle, all fucking 800 of them, chased me and my merry band down. You ever see one half-decent soldier with 24 Swadian Recruits try to fight off an entire army? I brought down 60 of the bastards, but I was the only survivor. Oh, and Swadia is down to 6 armies, while fighting the Nords, Rhodoks, and Khergits all at once. Each one of those factions has at least 13 armies.
Is this my fault, or are they just getting a bad break in my game? I mean, I beat the Nord king and his own single little army by myself once. That made me feel pretty awesome.
You might want to try and just focus on bandits for a while. I tend to go from village to village, recruiting all the recruits I can hold. I then focus on killing bandits, and let time pass so that any points that I have in Trainer (or a companion has) takes effect.
I avoided the big armies until I had over 50 units, most of which were mounted. However, I have full damage to my character on, so it is probably easier to do if you're only taking half damage or 1/4.
If you're trying to build up your mounted forces bands of Nord deserters consisting of Warriors are great. Just tell the men to keep up with you and just run through 'em time and time again like sheers through silk, and if you're patient enough takin' 'em on by your lonesome self with a joustin' lance produces a crapload of prisoners. Plus they seem to drop some decent middle-range stuff, Hauberks and the like - a 70-man-strong force I just took on with my OMA dropped like 20 of the goddamn things
It's just a pity you can't equip your troops by regiment like you can with the named NPCs.

How exactly did you manage to move a 25 man army slow enough to get engaged by an army that size?
Methinks he meant 80. Though now I can't get the image of him maniacally galloping over a hill followed by eight hundred god damn screaming axe-waving vikings out of my head.
And now I've got this sneaky little idea in my head. Does First Aid work if you order a retreat during the middle of a regular battle, or does it only do that during the intermissions between stages of castle sacking?
If you are not listening to metal when you play this game, you are doing something horribly, horribly wrong.
Also, damn, I'm getting pretty good at M&B. My guy's won multiple desperate scenarios....outnumbered 5-1 by Khergits, 4-1 by Rhodoks, etc...charged up a hill while sieging a castle, swinging his sword left and right as arrows covered his advance...dear god, so much craziness.
If you guys have decent computers(for comparison, I run an X1950pro, 2 gigs of ram, X2 4600+), get the graphical enhancement mod. It makes the game look a hell of a lot better. Also, bloom is toggle able!

The nords move in hoards. The largest one I ran into by accident had my army of 70 fighting 2000 nords.

But what about in seiges, they tend to lag a bit for me with my 222 battle size cap
can anyone post some screens of the graphical enhancement mod? I'm curious.
I find that MB actually has pretty good graphics for the terrain and buildings, and some equipment (especially helmets), but other pieces of equipment (anything with fur) and all the character models are a lot less pretty.

Spoiler'd for bigishness.
Only terrain and buildings are in the current release, characters and equipment are coming in the future.

There are planned improvements to equipment and character models, but improving the environments is bigger and more easily noticable, and I believe easier(depending on how he did it), hence it getting done first.
So my rebellion in supporting Lady Isolla of Suno was a success, after a very long and very difficult struggle. Only three lords came to our side, so you can imagine how difficult it was to fight this war. Anyway, by the end of it all the castles, towns and villages are run by my character, Isolla, Lords Ryis, Despin and Morten. While I take my army to harass the Vaegirs and Nords to stop them from attacking the fragile new Swadian kingdom, all the previous lords of the realm who we'd fought for so long appeared to come back into service. All of them hating me. While I'm laying siege to a Vaegir castle, word comes that Isolla is ready to declare a new Lord Marshall.
I accept her offer to run for the position, and it's down to me and Morten. "Ha!" I thought to myself. "Morten only just joined our side before the end of the war, surely I will be the new Lord Marshall". But, no. All those lords who hated me - including, bafflingly enough, Lord Ryis and Lord Despin, both of who really liked me for advising Isolla to give them all those castles and villages - they all vote for Morten. Ungrateful swine! I go back to my work of pissing off our enemies while being pissed off myself at everyone in Swadia, including Isolla.
Sometime later, Morten is defeated in battle and taken captive. One of the other lords, who had previously fought with King Harlaus against us, takes his place. He gets caught, too, and yet another lord of the same type becomes Lord Marshall.
My loyalty to Isolla and Swadia in general is being sorely tested now :x
I love this game

...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.

I had to strike out on my own. After months of bloodshed and tears in the field with my Nord brothers we've decimated the Swadians. I took a castle, loosing 3/4 of my troops in the process, and the bastard king decides to give it to someone else! This will not stand. I've declared my independence and will fight to the death to keep my newly won fortress. Maybe the Rhodocks will be a little more appreciative of my skills...
Having the graphic mods and the mod that allows for more troops in battle makes this a very pretty game. Having a lot of mounted melee troops turns battles into cluster fucks though, which is pretty annoying if you use a lance.

Heh this is pretty much what happens every time I play this game, I bust my ass to get a capital city, and they refuse to give it to me. So I revolt.
I threw 60 troops at a castle with 200, got them down to 20, but was attacked successively by two 50 man armies and three 30 man armies. So I never took the castle because I f I didn't leave I would die.
I had a brilliant one of those back in .960 i single handedly took every single major fucking city in the Rhoddock empire and fucking Lady Isolla refused to give me a single one to call my own. Quite naturally i was pissed off with that and left to join the Khergite. After reaving with them for a while i got bored and defected back to Swadia, only problem when i went to talk to Lady Isolla and be accepted back into her service she started another rebellion..... against herself... yeah.

So I just realized I've totally been playing this wrong. Evidently playing as the lone legendary hero is a bad idea...so...I decided to start wandering around and picking up soldiers in each town and raping bandits as they come. My merry band of novices (10 recruits) made mincemeat of 17 Hill Bandits. Not only that, but I've upgraded the buggers, and now I have enough money for a cooler shield and sword set.
This is where I kick myself for not shoveling the 15 bucks in when this first started.
