I'm out of college now, which means a few things, first I have a big boy job, and second I no longer live near my friends. Most often a few time zones away. So we play Video Games to catch up.
The only platform we all have that we can play games on is PC. But we have become jaded lately. Can anybody help us find a new game to play to help stay in touch.
We play copious amounts of TF2, we are trying to avoid the Time and Money suck of MMO's. Any suggestions?
First off, it's a pretty big field, if you narrow it down a bit that might help you find something you're after. What are your system specs? What genres are you guys into?
Anyway, recommendations away!
- SWAT 4: Awesome 5-player co-op campaign. Where TF2 is fast and frantic, SWAT 4 is the opposite, all about taking things slow and doing it by procedure. Best way to describe the action is periods of planning puncuated by bursts of activity as you breach a door or encounter suspects, and tense all the way through. One of my favourite co-op games ever.
- Serious Sam: From the exact opposite end of the spectrum, Serious Sam is all about blasting waves of ridiculous numbers with ever increasingly large guns.
- Company of Heroes: If you're into RTS's, this is one of the best on the market, and ideal for a 2v2 or 3v3 match. If you want to play more co-operatively you can always set up a comp-stomp (you guys vs. the computer). The game focusses more on squad level management and tactical usage of units and abilities. It's also probably one of the most epic RTS's I've ever played.
- Supreme Commander: Where CoH is all about small scale squad level tactics, Supreme Commander is all about large scale strategy spanning maps the size of continents. It's not uncommon to be engaged in simultaneous land, sea and air battles raging across the map, SupCom is all about the large scale strategy with unit counts in the hundreds.
This is just off the top of my head, I might think of more later. Aside from that, any moment now TychoChelchuuu is probably going to pop into this thread and deliver an entire list of games to try.
SOASE. Though I could recommend that all day every day.
Nothing quite says 'Hey buddy whatcha been up to' like making him wish he was dead because you just took over one of his key military outposts that he spent literally the last week and a half real time building up, in one decisive strike.

World in Conflict might be a good choice. Be sure you try and play on the same team, and be sure to have mics. Be sure.

SoaSE = "Sins of a Solar Empire" for those that don't know, and yes it's an awesome game and lasts ages on the larger maps.
It's basically a sort of hybrid 4X / RTS game. Good thing about it is the ability to save your games and continue on later, which is handy with the larger games.
On that front, you might also want to look up the Civilisation games, since they're all about the empire building and smiting of ones stick wielding enemies.
I was going to point out that I recommend SOASE because you can save multiplayer games and load them up later. Which for your situation for long distance different time zones is ideal.
It's like Galciv meets Homeworld in the middle with a little Civ 4 sprinkled on top and is completely awesome.
Will become completely obsolete the day galciv gets some multiplayer but it is one of my favourite PC games of recent times.
Thanks for the help so far guys, I have been looking into SOASE actually its Civ-esque correct?
I didn't want to narrow it down to much, because I know there are some real gems out there. To be honest I was kind of looking for something that is pretty easy to pick up for just a few games during the evening and the occasional 6 hour marathon on the weekend.
I have a pretty beefy computer (IMO)
Nvidia 680i SLI Mobo
Nvidia 8800 GTS 512
4 gigs ram
2.3 Dual Core
Not everybody elses is quite that high end, but comparable.
We have been playing since high school, ya know Doom 2, Quake, all the way up so for sure we like FPSs.
I always have a special place in my hard drive for war3 and Star Craft. I guess I was kind of looking for an RTS of some sort or adventure/rpg. TF2, and even the occasional BF2142 keeps us pretty busy on the FPS front.
Well Freespace 2 is a really good game from the space combat genre. A decade old but it's still the best game of its type even today. Game is available from GOG.com for about $6, and the graphics can be updated as well now thanks to the Source Code Project.
There's a thread on the game here which will give you the lowdown on everything you need to know, and it's the best place to ask questions.

Fixed.
I would suggest playing Wing Commander: Prophecy or Privateer. Only games ever with decently directed live action cut scenes that didn't come off as corny or just plain sad.

Third that recommendation. Every friend I've introduced to it so far has bought it, and some have converted a few of THEIR own friends. Just recently spent an epic night playing about 6 hours of this with them, and only stopped because it was 1 am. Games can literally last 40 hours if you want them to, although I don't have the patience for ones that big.
Titan Quest is the best Diablo clone to date and can be a lot of fun with a group of friends online. Alternatively, If you like TF2, you'd probably like Shadowrun. It's basically TF2 with high tech gadgets and magic spells.
Both of the above mentioned games can be found for dirt cheap these days.
GRAW
GRAW2
Rainbow Six Vegas
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Gears of War for 2 player co-op
Synergy mod for HL2
Neverwinter Nights + Expansions (already mentioned I know)
Unreal Tournament (any of them really)
Baldur's Game & Baldur's Gate 2
Icewind Dale & Icewind Dale 2
Dungeon Siege
For a start, Those all have co-op (except UT, Unless you count Team Deathmatch) and should all be dirt cheap by now.
Yeah, I was going to mention Titan Quest. If you can handle straying into Quasi MMO territory, then Guild Wars does the co-op play but without subscription fees (get GuildWars: Nightfall rather than the other versions). There's also a bunch of ok to fuck around for a couple of weeks MMOs that have free trials. Tabula Rasa, Dungeons and Dragons Online, I think WoW has one too but I could be wrong
The first R6 Vegas has some pretty good 4 player coop and the new one R6 Vegas 2, has a fun coop campaign (2 people only) as does Gears of War.
Anything I have that has multiplayer is a bit dated, so take these as you will.
Baldur's Gate Saga
Awesome alone, awesome together. Likewise for the Icewind Dale games.
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
There was a Game On some time ago, so I imagine the multiplayer must be fun on some level.
Myth II
I've played this co-op with a friend and we had a load of fun. I'm not sure how many players it supports in co-op, but you also have the other maps, like CTF, King of the Hill, etc.
Neverwinter Nights would be a good alternative to the BG games. It's more action-oriented, so it may be a better option for a group of people.
And then there's stuff like Worms or Soldat or whatever. Quick, painless, usually a lot of fun.
SOASE. Though I could recommend that all day every day.

Im currently in the middle of a game that has lasted at least 2 weeks. When you get two players or equal skill you dont just fight battles you fight wars. I have border worlds, bread basket planets, entire shipping lanes and production outposts. I cant wait for the new expansion with the proper starbases, that shit is going to enhance the game so much.
Thanks again for so many recomendations and keep 'em coming. Maybe it is just me, but I guess I kind of feel like the PC goes through famine phases we have one or two really great games near the holidays and maybe the random drop in the middle of summer, but after that its sit and wait for the big studios to have something new. Diablo 3? Starcraft 2? Those release dates can't get here sooner.
Crysis Warhead comes out tomorrow and you have a nice system, the multiplayer it supposed to be leagues better then the original - I enjoyed the original - so you could try that and it is only 30 bucks

Hopefully they'll actually do something about the rampant cheating that was prevalent in the MP of the original one

Hehe, well multiplayer is a plus for sure but I'm always on the look out for nice distractions. I completely forgot about Dawn of War 2 coming out, although i can't find a reliable release date on that either.
Are there any Final Fantasy Tactics type games I missed?
To be honest I wish we could get some of the XBLA Games on PC, Fat Princess? Braid? Castle Crashers? those all seem sweet.

I just made a post about King's Bounty, with a linked demo. I think that might be the kind of thing you'd be into if you like SRPG's.
GTA:SA has a pretty fun multiplayer mod and a huuuuge community. But then again, GTA4 for the PC comes out in like two months.

What came to mind was Never Winter Nights, or poker.

But one that has to be played is Defcon. Peried.
