A suitably messy start. Having a small squad compared to X-Com tends to make things hairy when things don't go as well. I forget if that's due to the transport limitations in the game or just number of recruits though.

In positive news, I'm not quite dead yet. As I'm the only grunt trained to operate the CAF tanks, they have me working at a VR console - thank god for technology. When they get a couple of new Gunnys they will start shoving us into the tanks before the mission.
On the other hand, I am in such deep shit.
Mission 1 and the UFO sets down right next to Kinetic Barriers Science Facility. Fortunately the place was abandoned before we got there, but I think i've put a hole in just about every wall in the facility. I managed to pop two of them, but one of the greys got me with a pistol! A pistol! What the hell are we up against when I can't even survive against light weapons.
We would like to thank you and your compatriots for cleansing our facility of the Alien Menace.
However we would like to broach the subject of compensation for damages incurred during your firefight.
We demand the sum of $100,000 for property damages sustained and $500,000 for loss to research materials. In addition there will be a $5,000 fee for removal of the tank wreckage from our car park.
You have 10 days to comply.

In a personal note I'm staying away from Private Zen. That crazy SOB charged two Greys with a cattle prod. I spoke with Food in the infirmary and he said Zen was just continuously shocking them till they went down. Then he throws em over his shoulder like its no big deal and carrys them into the transport.
Food said word has it that Commander Phoenix didn't want the Grey Pvt Zen captured, so Zen just took it out back and shot it.
In other news, we need Medkits and as soon as we can get em. I may have been miles away, but watching Jesuits bleed to death out there wasn't right - I know we were outnumbered but surely we can put together a medical pack for situations like that..
Right, how do I log this thing off. I need to go and mess with the sights on Private Flippy's Rifle, see how long it takes him to notice.

Speaking of- everything is quiet for a few days, letting research on Laser Technology completes. That opens up Laser Pistols and Medkits. (don't ask why the medkits are laser-tech. You don't want to know.). For now, we'll head for laser pistols. We also have:

Everyone heals up (the new recruits take a two day "medical exam" on arrival) just in time for the next UFO. This one is halfway around the planet, and landed. Food and Zen Vulgarity get to sit this one out; everyone else gets tossed into the transport for the assault. A Raptor goes along just in case the aliens get frisky.
The Raptor runs out of range before arriving, and has to do a about-face back to base. Fortunately, the craft stays landed. Unfortunately, the transport can't risk waiting for dawn, so we'll be fighting at about 4 AM. Did I mention the CAF doesn't have night vision or flares?
Oh, and the aliens are hiding in caves. Yeah, this'll be fun...
Wheezer, 1k Dicks, and Velmeran move forward first, to the left, right, and center respectively. When they see nothing everyone else moves up- gotta get out of this confined space, and fast. The aliens decline to come out and play during their turn, so everyone begins to spread out.
All that's seen is some lights and rather creepy looking mining/construction equipment.

The section 1k Dicks and his backup, mrsnackroad are exploring turns out to be an alien-free dead end. The double back and meet up with the group in the middle- that's Velmeran, Khavall, and Zone. Wheezer, Typthus733, and Lampley move down a side tunnel. The aliens once more fail to so much as peep.
The main group finds itself in another deserted tunnel. Hey guys, did we land at the right spot?
More silence.
Lampley makes the first sighting, spotting a Floater off in the distance as the tunnel widens.
He throws a grenade, which bonks the Floater in the head and explodes, spraying alien bits all over the all. A Chaser walks into view, spots the corpse, and runs away. Either that or he's incredibly retarded and is trying to sneak up on the other group.
Typhus333 moves up, but the bugger is long gone.
On the other side, that tunnel widens as well- and surprise surprise, there's company at the end. A Larve, in this case. Velmeran rips off a burst and puts it down.
A Chaser steps up during the alien turn to avenge the Larve, but it hits nothing but wall. There's a sniper behind it, though. The sniper has a heavy plasma. I think you know where this is going...
RIP Velmeran.
Neither of the aliens are visible now, and no one particularly wants to be the first to go down that tunnel. So no one does- Zone sends a rocket down it again. By the screams, he got them both!
The tunnel splits into three here, so one solider goes down each, with Zone hanging back to provide fire-support. (read: shoot them after you draw fire).
Typhus733 follows the Chaser, but still can't see it. Lampley sets a Proximity Grenade into a side tunnel before he and Wheezer follow along.
The side passage splits. Lampley goes north while the other two go east- its possible that route will double behind the main group. If it does, we need to find out ASAP.
Speaking of, after the alien turn is silent once more, mrsnackroad moves up, spots a Larve hiding behind some equipment, and pots it. Khavall runs up the other side to check if it had help, but spots nothing.
The Chasers come out to play then. One was behind the Larve, but fortunately it hits only rock, and the dirt right in front of mrsnackroad. He'll need new pants, but he's a-OK otherwise.
Not so Lampley. The Chaser that evaded them earlier steps out from around a blind corner and puts him down with a pair of pistol shots. He's wounded, not dead, and Typhus733 makes sure it stays that way for now by spinning around and charging the Chaser. A couple dodged shots later and it takes a load of shot in the chest.
Wheezer continues down the side tunnel. Its a bit dangerous, but that side is getting low on troopers.
mrsnackroad aims carefully and headshots the Chaser that was tormenting him. It doesn't die.
The next round does the trick.
A Sectoid follows in the Chaser's footsteps, but doesn't fire. mrsnackroad shoots it too.
It doesn't die either, and its return fire takes down Zone. Shaken, mrsnackroad's next shot misses entirely. Khavall tries to assist, but he's on the other side of some heavy equipment. He tries to blast through to get a shot- no go. 1k Dicks is simply too far south.
mrsnackroad doesn't get a chance to shoot again.
Khavall rounds the corner and hurls a grenade at the Sectoid's last spot- no go.
Meanwhile, Wheezer and Typhus733 explore the side tunnels, sweating bullets the entire time. Typhus dras the lucky draw and comes to a dead end, giving him a couple of safe turns while he runs back to Wheezer.
The other side is decidely NOT safe. The same damn Sectoid walks out of the dark and pots Khavall.
1k Dicks decides to stay waaaaay back, and brings it down with a grenade.
Wheezer finally spots another alien- a Chaser wanders into view, but doesn't fire. Not a good angle for a shot, so he tosses a grenade at its feet instead. One less.
Two less- apparently these things- aside from that one Sectoid- aren't all that bright. A Floater appears in exactly the same spot. Wheezer shrugs and dispatches it in exactly the same way.
Behind that there's a Larve. It pokes its...thing...around the corner enough for Typhus733 to take a reaction shot. He misses. It doesn't. Twice. He does survive, though he's badly burned and the injuries have reduced his AP so much that by the time he steps out of the cloud he doesn't have enough to fire!
But that's why we have backup. Wheezer charges up, aims, and...misses.
Oh dear.
The next turn is bad. The larve fires twice, hitting both of them and bringing them down. Wheezer does manage to squeeze off a reaction shot, but misses by a mile. He dies soon after, and with Typhus733 laying knocked out in a cloud of poison gas, he isn't long for this world either.
And just to add to the carnage, Khavall dies of his earlier injuries.
Typhus733 dies. The larve is PROBABLY (...I hope) the last alien, so from here on out its a cat and mouse game. Time isn't on our side; Zone, mrsnackgod, and Lampley are still alive, but they won't stay that way much longer.
..and they don't. Zone and mrsnackgod both die on the next turn, while 1k Dicks runs through the tunnels, cursing loudly as he tries to find a route behind the Larve.
And there it is! Say, you think those tanks are flammable?
Fortunately not. A grenade does the Larve in, and that's that. Talk about skin of your teeth wins...
1k Dicks in unhurt. Lampley is alive, but only technically; he'll be out for 33 days. Everyone else? Dead as doornails.
Of those recovered from the most recent mission, we are most concerned about the remains of mrsnackroad - we were unsure of the quality of the cloning process, but as the technician poured the genetic goo that was once a fully grown man into the tubes, it was pretty clear that at some point during the mission, his bowels had evacuated.
We didn't catch the mistake soon enough, but what are the chances we'll have to cull the full roster and force the dead back into service?
See, that's what happens when Private First Class Food doesn't go on missions. People die. Still, Private 1k Dicks is doing us all proud. Trust the sniper to get a face full of heavy plasma; you spend all your time staring down a scope and guess what happens!*
*Those aliens are going to summarily kill themselves once Flippy gets cloned.
Maybe the bright side is I died early so I'll get cloned before too long?
I guarantee you that you'll be cloned several times during the course of this Let's Play. It's Mission 2, and we've lost over 6 people already. We shall bury the aliens under the weight of our dead!
If by some chance we don't have flamers available by the time my turn comes up again, I'd like a rifle instead of a shotgun. Throwin' that out there while I'm thinking of it.

Of those recovered from the most recent mission, we are most concerned about the remains of mrsnackroad - we were unsure of the quality of the cloning process, but as the technician poured the genetic goo that was once a fully grown man into the tubes, it was pretty clear that at some point during the mission, his bowels had evacuated.
We didn't catch the mistake soon enough, but what are the chances we'll have to cull the full roster and force the dead back into service?
