Well, I call it a journal, but it's really more of an old copy of TV Guide I found in the ruins. That's okay, because I don't have a pencil. But if I did, I could write in all these entries according to time and network! I'll just have to remember them, so when I do find a pencil I could sit down one night and put all my journal entries on the pages here.
I managed to hitch a ride to Esperanza with a space trucker hauling a consignment of frozen pizzas to the CAF base. The pilot said I wouldn't be allowed in through the loading docks, and they'd kill her just for bringing me, so she dropped me off a few miles from the base and I had to hike over there.
I've set up camp at the main door. I think it's the main door. Actually, it's really the only door at ground level. I keep seeing ships flying in and out through those hatches on the roof, but this door hasn't been opened in the entire week I've been sitting here. I even set up a stack of empty beer bottles in front of it, so if they open it while I'm asleep it'll knock them over and I'll wake up. Clearly, somebody's used this door at some point in the past; this giant penis didn't spraypaint itself on the wall.
So now, I wait to be accepted into the glorious CAF. I wait, and I watch, and I read my TV Guide. I mean, my journal. Did you know Access Hollywood used to be on at both 4 and 7:30?

And you'll GET a big gun.Hopefully tommorow; I tried tonight but the laptop is acting funky and needs to be debugged (yes, Virginia, Intel mobile chips such so much they even have issues with TBS games)
So, what would we need to get this game up and running on our own systems? Sure I've just dropped the cash on the X-Com Bundle, available on Steam, but UFO: Extraterrestrials looks like it adds quite a bit to the base gameplay.
I'm glad those frozen pizzas finally came in. I've been eating or ordering out every day for the past few days ever since someone on KP duty mistook one of the guys awaiting cloning for soup mix. We caught the mistake before anyone ate any of that, but the lab boys couldn't separate the tissue mixture from the soup at that stage of the process and had to take the whole pot back with the vegetables still mixed in. Guess who had to lug around a steaming hot pot of beef stock and soldier back to the cloning facility? Place gives me the creeps. The scientists also asked me to try to find "a bigass colander" in the next few weeks when they're ready to separate the mixture. In the meantime, I put a label on the pot and used some cardboard and a sharpie to write "Cloning lab. Not a pantry" on the appropriate door to try to prevent further mixups.
Speaking of the science department on base, I've been spending some time in the research labs doing errands while waiting to be deployed. It's a bit boring sometimes to be little more than a gofer when we have aliens doing a number out there, but it looks like we'll be packing some serious firepower once I do go into the field. There's this one huge laser they've been working on behind some heavy radiation shielding. Apparently the output they need on it is enough to cut a horse in two but they're having trouble getting it that high without it overheating. It also spits out tons of radiation. They think that they'll have the power level up to spec soon, but the radiation is still going to be a problem. There's some radiation shielding in our armor so the rest of a squad will be safe, but the lab guys I've talked to say that whoever's holding and firing the finished product for more than a few minutes shouldn't count on having any children. Then either to prove a point or just because they're bored, they tossed in a sectoid corpse in the laser test chamber and the thing exploded after a few minutes like a pet in a microwave.
Before I left, I asked the researchers if they could whip up some night vision gear or at least some lights on our shoulders or helmets so we could see in the dark. It strikes me as stupid to have to fumble our way around mines and night missions like that when we've had the technology since the 20th century and I figure that it should be a cinch to come up with something if we can design lasers and a one man weapons platform. I'd be happy with just a flashlight and some duct tape really. I wound up drawing blank looks the moment the words "night vision" left my mouth and the lab guys looked at each other silently for about a minute before they sent me off to find a speculum, pizza cutter, and a turkey baster. Apparently the probulator is on the fritz again.
flub gurgle flug gurgle twitch gloop glug gurgle! (What the fuck are these carrots doing in here? WHY AM I SO HOT? They'd better be glad this damn potato's stuck in my eye, if someone gets shot in the back it won't be my fault! Assholes.)

It doesn't take much. Any regular computer built in the last five years or so should do. You DO have to do a fair bit of modding- see ufo scene for all the files. My laptop just sucks.
Its also finally smashed into behaving again, so double catch-up update tomorrow.
Joined the forces a few weeks ago. This new base I've been assigned to is impressive, to say the least. The base appears well-stocked, but some of the personnel are kind of edgy, to say the least.
For example, I saw one of the scientists bitching out the canteen workers, for some reason involving a vat of what appeared to be a tasty-looking soup. Took a spoonful while his back was turned. No wonder that scientist was pissed - the meat tasted more than a little off.
I've been assigned a Heavy Weapons position. Here's hoping I can get hold of some of the toys they had me testing in the R&D section.
This "training program" sucks. Yeah I have no combat experience. But pulling laundry duty for a few weeks won't make me fight aliens any better. And all these bloodstains and goo and whatever the hell is on these combat clothes are nasty.
I'm going to threaten the Sarge if this doesn't end soon. Maybe showing some agression will land me some real action. Damn alien scum needs a heavy dose of dieing.
And here we go. First on the list is a bit of recruiting; we can't have this one group having all the fun! Say hi to WMain00, Klyka, MrBlarney, Domhnall, and YerMum.

I forgot, did I survive the last round after I did my healing?
Everything stays quiet long enough for them to heal up, and then Heavy Laser research completes. Nocren about smashes down the lab taking the plans to the manufacturing room..
Research goes into Medkits next. From there, what do we want? Weapons, armor, new vehicles?

Yes, you're still with us.
A little while after the Heavy Laser incident, a UFO appears, maybe drawn in by the commotion. Its close, and by the time the shooting ends its even closer. Maybe we should just walk to this one, eh? :P
We decide to wait for dawn. This mission will have Raiden333, Behemoth, WMain00, Klyka, MrBlarney, Domhnall, VerMum, and Zen Vulgarity on board.
Domhnall is next off, and also sees nothing. Everyone else deploys around him, wondering what they've missed.
In this case, it turns out to be a Floater. The thing opens fire on Zen Vulgarity, hitting him hard with a Heavy Plasma. He stays up, but that's not going to last. He also can't reach the Floater since the hit cost him too much AP.
Plus its, you know, floating.
MrBlarney runs up and unloads a burst, but misses it entirely. The smug look on its face gets wiped off a moment later:
and YerMum scores again. Behemoth runs up to Zen Vulgarity to take care of the injury, but without medpacks we'll be patching up the bleeding all mission. Just fixing the damage takes a Stimpack and a half. Plus a couple of vomit bags as he looks over the wound. And its location.

Why do aliens always aim for the crotch in UFO related let's plays?
Zen gets patched up again the next turn, fixing what damage the bleeding did. Then he moves up and spots a Larve- but its out of range again.
Raiden333 tries for it.
Miss. Behemoth tries too, with a grenade, but it falls short. Klyka goes for a Hail Mary shot.
This ain't a happy sports flick, so that's a miss. And then things get weird. There's no one in the area who can safely fire at the Larve, so Zen Vulgarity braces for its attack- and another alien shoots it in the ass, killing it.
Another Larve opens fire from the north, wreathing MrBlarney in a cloud of green smoke. He goes down- not dead, but breathing poison gas. Dead man...laying.
YerMum steps up and spots the Larve, but manages to miss entirely. Behemoth runs up too and ducks to grab a grenade- then accidentally fires his shotgun, wasting his AP. WMain00 manages to save them both by potting the Larve.
That leaves the alien that shot the first Larve. Klyka moves up and spots it- its a Chaser. A pistol blast misses, so Zen Vulgarity creeps closer while Raiden333 and Klyka fire at it. Nothing hits.
MrBlarney kicks the bucket. Zen Vulgarity, on the other hand...does not. Despite the Chaser in front firing on him, and getting support from at least one more. They unload at least 15 shots, but only one hits, and it doesn't even make him bleed. (but they hit him in the crotch, again).
It does have one bad side effect:
He's hurt enough to reduce his speed, meaning he runs out of AP just as he gets into stun range. Whoops!
Raiden333 aims carefully and fires twice, hitting the Chaser both times. But he does a total of 20 damage- not nearly enough. So Klyka decides to get close enough to make aiming not a problem.
Despite the range, he only hits the Chaser once, but that's enough.
Apparently the aliens are feeling fratecidal tonight, because one shoots the Floater- unfortunately without killing it. That's about the only bit of good news from the alien turn, though. Plasma bolt after plasma bolt arcs in from the dark, slamming into Zen and Klyka and wounding them both. Even Domhnall, down south struggling to reach the fighting, gets shot at.
Then the Floater tosses in a little present.
The Plasma Grenade vaporizes Zen, and sends Klyka crumbling to the ground.
Domhnall runs forward into the chaos and repays explosives with explosives. First at the Floater, then at a Chaser he spotted on the way in. When the smoke clears, three aliens are dead- but he's exposed and all the nearby help is on the ground bleeding.
Raiden333 moves up to help, while the remaining squad members sweep toward them both.
The enemy doesn't wait. A Chaser steps up and fires on Domhnall while Raiden333 watches helplessly. But the shotgunner stays on his feet and guns the Chaser down.
Raiden333 charges in to heal him- only to have his patient take a plasma bolt and collapse just as he arrives. Out of AP and in the firing line, he can only brace himself for the next burst.
It doesn't come. Behemoth bolts forward, and his movement- and bellowing shotgun- distracts the aliens. He spots the UFO as a bonus, but gets shot at from two different directions for his pains. A Chaser steps in view and fires on him as well.
Nothing actually HITS, though. Unfortunately, his two aimed shots don't hit either. WMain00 is right behind him, and has to fire nine times before he can bring the Chaser down.
To the south, Raiden333 strides forward, ready to throw "First do no harm" out the window. A Floater gets into view first.
A burst later and its down, writhing. One more shot rings out.
And that was the last of them. Klyka will be out for 28 days, Domhnall for 26.
That frees up a bit of bunk space for Fish, Antihippy, and Dignified Pauper. A bit later, there's a shout of joy from the firing range as Nocren takes Charlene out for the first time.
A few days later and the rookies are ready. More importantly, MedKit research is finished. On to armor! The next UFO appears over Seathopia a few days later, and by then Larve research is complete. This leads to Chemical Grenades, but with research of the Scout (alien ship) it also leads to armor.

Heh, I just realized that you came from Singapore.
Lived there for 12 years before moving here.
Is Australia nice, I heard they have kangaroos.
Australian now.
The kangaroos here are delicious. Especially with drop-bears.
How old are you now?
I should go Australia one day and see if you still look remotely Singaporean.
Add me on Live if you've got a 360. Connections to Australia from Singapore is decent. PM me, let's not jack this thread, comrade.

I just came into the thread to ask this exact question.
I've had it answered to me explicitly, I just always forget.
I can barely take the smells that emanate through the base from the cloning process. That's all I have to say today.
