I'm gonna throw my support for some of the games people have already mentioned:
Jagged Alliance 2 - A classic. The personality, the weapons, the heads blowing up... I love this game
Xcom - The original. Although it doesn't have the personality JA2 does, it has a lot of stuff JA2 doesn't have which is fantastic.
Call of Duty 4 - Not ground breaking, not revolutionary, but a damn fine execution of an FPS in a FPS laden market. The fact that I still play it speaks wonders (for me).
Alpha Centauri - The only 4X game I will ever play ever again.
A lot of people have mentioned GalCiv2 - GalCiv2 is a fantastic game, and I enjoyed it tremendously. However, I would ask that those people who played it an enjoyed it, please, please PLEASE try Space Empires 4: Gold. Its a bit uglier, and a bit more complex, but (IMO) it offers far more that GalCiv2. And it is with that statement that I declare Space Empires 4: Gold to be my perfect game.

I was going to say, this thread is bullshit, and no game is perfect, but then I got to Sonic and Knuckles and I had a little crisis of confidence. Games can be "perfect," you just have to assume that "perfect" means "perfectly balanced." When the game works, predictably, for a normal distribution of players, it could be considered perfect.
And that's where D&D comes in. Perfect system of rules players use in which one player happens to control a lot more of the universe than the others.
Also, dick me, Arvo, now I have to go find a way of playing the Kain games again. Those were fucking incredible.

I want to say Vagrant Story, but it wasn't very accessible to most players. Still, it did everything else most console-styled RPGs wished or pretended they were doing, especially in the areas of cinematography and storytelling.
It is one of few games to win a 40/40 from Famitsu, which unlike other high numbers, don't come easy. In fact it's only ever been given to a single game on any platform thus far, making Vagrant Story the only Playstation game to earn it. Furthermore, only Ocarina of Time and Soul Calibur had earned the score before it.

I might catch some flak for this, but The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. It was my first 3d Zelda game, and I was 11 when I bought it. It was outright beautiful. The visuals were spectacular (I'll always remember the time I approached Ganondorf's fortress by sea the first time. The sun was just rising as I got to the point where it automatically fast forwards to night, so I watched it arc across the sky, with all the entailed lighting changes), the music was great, and the sense of solitude on the open sea really struck a chord with me. Not to mention, the very final blow against the final boss is one of the most satisfying I've ever had in gaming. I'll be playing that game for years to come.

I'm sure the perfect and near-perfect Famitsu scores for half of all the Zelda games, Okami, Brawl, MGS4, MGS3, and Mario 64 were all just money talking. Obviously all horribly deficient games covering up for their serious underlying flaws by greasing palms or products of warped judgement.
I think that's where individual taste comes in. COD4 might be perfect for one person but not another; same with Starcraft. And seeing what people think is perfect is what makes this thread interesting to me, not necessarily their reasons why.
as the finest iteration of kart gaming mankind has seen.
I'm with you here. I think it's good for the general gamer that they nerfed snaking in the wii version, but it made the ds game that much more intense.

What makes me sad about CoD4 is the campaign is awesome, but no co-op. can't stand the multiplayer.
but since enemies endlessly respawn, it would have made it perfect for counter-op.
Perfect Dark. It's one of those games that are so awesome, and then you sit there perplexed as to why no other developer can replicate it's magic.
It had a fully functional co-op with a seperate character for the 2nd player, something Halo didn't do until 3. It had counter-op mode, which no FPS has done since and makes me sad. The weapon selection was gigantic and no weapon felt redundant. The bots... oh man, the bots. They actually had personality, intelligence, they were legitimately fun to play against. There wasn't any stinker of a map (except Car Park, maybe). The Challenge mode was fucking awesome and no game has replicated that, either. Player customization, from appearance to how the game behaved - and this was on a split screen game. Each player could individually decide if they wanted teammates highlighted, autoaim, what have you. Oh, and a pretty nifty rank system.
If only we could get a new version with a solid framerate and the still-dizzy-even-after-you-die bug fixed.
Thank you. Finally, someone else with taste. I would want online multiplayer for the new version, of course.
I always thought the dizzy bug was intentional. The framerate does definitely hurt now, but I didn't notice it at the time. I agree 100%. No FPS has matched this calibre again.
Fallout 2 was so far from perfect I am ignoring anyone that puts it up. It is an amazing game, a game that I have absolutely fell in love with. It could have spent a lot more time in the polish and bug fixing stage though, still a tremendous game that is worthy of praise.
My perfect games, the games that I keep coming back to and find little criticism?
The Guardian Legend for the NES.
I cannot express to you the sheer amount of delight and enjoyment I get out of this game. The combination of space shooter/Top-down RPG is just amazing. That is my go to game for enjoyment, it is just absolutely enjoyable.
Planescape torment, all the awe that I experienced with Fallout but polished. The characters, the world, original, creative and distinct. No other game has given me the sense of such a vast and creative setting as Planescape.
Despite some of its flaws, and the fact that I pretty much hate Bethesda I will have to throw in Morrowind. God damn that was a good game, magic system was fucked but hey I really enjoyed just losing myself into the world.
Starcraft though wins handsdown. There is nothing I would improve about that game, absolutely nothing.
My vote goes to Shadow of the Colossus. I freaking love that game, and know that I could play through it over and over until the day I die...just a bloody perfect experience.
Any game that's not at least five years old can't even really be seriously considered. Games really need some time to age before we can go around calling them "perfect." For goodness' sake, The World Ends With You has been out for, what, a few months? That said...
Super Mario Bros. 3. It's not just better than Super Mario World, it's a lot better. Better aesthetic, better level design, better music, better power-ups. It's almost twenty years old, and it's still the 2D platformer. It's the best game among one of the best game libraries in the history of the medium. The reason that it hasn't been improved upon is that it can't be.
I'm actually a little surprised at the lack of fighting game love so far in the thread. I suppose you can argue, though, that there's always at least one little change you could make to any fighting game that would make it even better, which I suppose is just a side effect of being so complex.

Vagrant Story is my favorite playstation game, and is very close to being my favorite game of all time. That said, the game is not free of flaws. Despite all of the places that Vagrant Story succeeds, it is hard as hell until you figure out the weapon affinity and crafting system. Unfairly so.
However, once you do figure it out (if you can stick with it long enough), everything comes together and really does feel perfect.
It took me about 4 years of playing it off and on to finally "get it", so needless to say I have not always held it in such high esteem.
Simply because the control scheme and the gameplay work so well.
I get annoyed every time I go flying in the air because the box I was on turned, or a gate acts bizarre because a milk crate behind it screws up its opening. Half-Life 2's physics engine needed a lot of work.

Except the SP was the worst part of CoD4, and was vastly inferior to all the other FPS' that came out that year

I personally believe SMB3 should be put above SMW for the main reason that when I play SMW I keep wishing it had the variety of powerups that SMB3 had. Also, no matter how much I try I enjoy Yoshi in his own games but really don't care for him in Mario games.
As a side note on TWEWY - one of the things that to me makes a game earn a "perfect" title would be that even non-fans of the genre might enjoy the game. Case in point - even people that don't always like strategy games would likely enjoy Starcraft because it's just so well made and fun. I generally don't like RPGs - is TWEWY good enough that it might suck me in?

All of them.

b: CoD4 compares favorably with all of them.

I've played all of these. I personally don't enjoy Crysis. Bioshock was fantastic, but I felt somewhat aloof from the story itself, and felt about the same of Episode 2.
But I was Soap in CoD4. It was meee. I didn't quite feel the same with any other single player part of any games that have come out recently.

It seems to be a pretty polarizing game. My honest guess is that if you don't like most RPGs, TWEWY won't change that. The game basically centers around equipment management and fast-paced combat, but the endgame is the most giantest of all giant collect-a-thons. I would definitely recommend it to any RPG fan, however.
