my professors have just decided to go on strike because they've been working without a contract for the last four months.

also:

*the university wants to introduce a new class of professors which only have Masters' degrees, and give them the same responsibilities as PhDs, which devalues both the professors' profession and my education

*the U wants to reduce a fund which was set up to normalize differences in payroll due to visible minorityship, gender, disabilities, etc - it was at $100 000, which wasn't enough, and now they want to change it to $20 000.

*the previous contract held the standard of pay at the provincial average, which is the same that everyone else in ontario gets paid. this is apparently too much money now.

PROS FOR ME

fuck school.

CONS FOR ME

i'm paying $300-$500 a week so that I can say 'fuck school,' and there will be no refunds because the university is composed entirely of dickheads.

so what do you guys think? have you ever participated in a 'work stoppage' yourself? was your dad a strikebreaker for Henry Ford in the thirties?

I voted in the student election today

all I really wanted to do was vote for the newspaper that had the prettier advertising campaign because I am that shallow, instead they gave me four ballot sheets with too many options

my first option were the conservative people and my last were the feminists, I did not know or care who the 16 other parties were

There's no problem having masters level professors as long as it's for generic core classes or like X 101 intro shit. As long as the pay scale recognizes those who have PhD's. A lot of colleges actually have programs where someone with a masters degree teaches as part of their program work and financial aid to get their doctorate.

Also, if it was me, I'd tell those bitches to get back to work because I don't pay 500 bucks a week for them to mull about bitching about their paychecks. They can do that in-between semesters.

yeah but those MAs typically teach under supervision and are recognized as being separate, also these instructors would be teaching the exact same subjects as the current professors

Then it's up to you to make sure the school is meeting your educational needs. I never minded having an MA or a Teacher's Assistant (TA) for things outside of my major like my english or humanities classes. Even for some of my labs I didn't mind, because it was basically 30min of discussion and then run tests for 3 hours to determine your unkown. But if it was like Organic Chemistry or Instrumental Chemistry, I'd be pissed I was being shortchanged in my education value.

it's probably a different thing for math or science, which (although i haven't taken advanced levels) seems to be pretty much 'teach the textbook in a well-founded way'

but for english teachers, almost all of the curriculum is determined by research, knowledge about the subject, and critical thinking skills, all of which are developed throughout the course of the masters' and doctorate

i wouldn't want my early british literature teacher also teaching me contemporary genre fiction, but at a lower level of credentials

It's illegal. I remember some companies in the 1800s tried to do it (I think?), and it didn't go over well. Of course, certain individuals are exempt from unions, but places like Walmart are exactly the types of places that usually have them.

Yeah they do shit like that. The thing is it hurts them immensely because they actually have to improve the workplace and guarantee wage improvement for things like inflation and shit. It's very beneficial to the worker because you have good job protection and benefits and stuff like this. However it does cause some cockiness and unwillingness to cooperate with management. You'll notice management in places with unions tend to be real dickfuckers. However the types of places that have them would've breed this type of manager anyways, because the nature of the work is very factory oriented or "get as much done as possible and push as hard as you can and drain the worker" type of deal. Basically minimum wage type jobs.

    oh cool union strike story

my dad was in charge of a plant in new jersey that went on strike, apparently the unions in jersey dont fuck around and threats were made towards my dad and family

so back here in west virginia, we got a bodyguard

these 3 guys came in shifts and sat outside the house and every now and then he would walk around making sure everything was cool

he would follow us to school and talk to the principal and such to let them know what was going on

this lasted for about 2 weeks until the strike ended

no teamsters ever made any attempts though

also there was no hot bodyguard action ala kevin costner and whitney houston
