So us PC gamers haven't gotten anything Mechwarrior/Battletech related in a long while and Mechassault was a long while ago and that one game I didn't care about has been forgotten by Microsoft.
So where do I go for my mech itch?
Games or mods, any age or level. Just something to make me feel like I am working a titan of death.
edit: I feel I should mention that I will happily accept Gundam-esq or Battletech as long as I am in a steel bipedal titan.
Hey man Mechwarrior 4 mercenaries was quite good. I've played through it a number of times. Other then that I don't think there is much out. You could try armored core 4 but the gameplay isn't the same at all. It just has mechs and lots of customisation.

Man I hope they bring the Mechwarrior games to GOG.com. That would be awesome.
Unfortunately devs seemed to have pretty much abandoned the genre, apart from some of the anime style games like Armoured Core, which are good, just not the same style as the old PC mech sims.
Oh hooray a group founded in 2007 which hasn't produced any games yet as a company has these licenses. I'm filled with optimistic glee. According to Wikipedia they have 12 employees?
Irregardless of the question "these guys probably have good ideas but do they have any actual development power/skill", there's no fucking way this is near future anything.

Maybe they will put the development on another company and stay on as executive producers.
Why the fuck doesn't this have it's own stickied thread?

Mechwarrior 2, Ghost Bear's Legacy, and Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries would be completely awesome to have on GoG, especially if they fix the bugs where your own lasers would fire too slowly or something and hit the front of your own Battlemech. Well, and the bugs in the 'mech editor.
Now that I think of it, Mechwarrior 3 was amazing, it just needed more balancing and less breaks from the well-thought out, well-tested board game rules. The (wholly realistic and long overdue) mouse controls made it easy, but actual Battletech/Mechwarrior balances the ability to free-aim. The free space in your arms is limited, and weapons mounted to elsewhere in the 'mech chassis can't aim like that. They fire Mechwarrior 2-style, so you have to torso twist or turn the whole 'mech instead of just shooting to the sides.
After that, get rid of the 15-second field repair BS.
The next thing Mechwarrior needs is Melee. It's actually a huge balancing factor for the game; it's what makes heavies so terrifying to small, fast 'mechs that can run circles around them: they can dodge indirect fire, but if the 100-ton 'mech bearhugs you, it can literally crush your lightweight 'mech in its arms.

And who knows who that could be. This is very cautious optimism worthy, but my pain point was "near future what". :P

That’s heresies and blasphemy wrapped upped into a sandwich made with bread risen from an oven crafted out of small children, layered with several topping of curses and sworn. For shame...for shame.
...there's no fucking way this is near future anything.
While 'near future' does imply that the subject of time is a relative concepts of what one would view as 'soon', it is however subjects to interpretation by one’s own view of how long a length of time is. What I view as the near future for mua’, may very well be the far future for many.
The crysis mod looks nice but I hope it doesn't die out like the one that was supposed to come out for battlefield 2.
I'd look forward to MW:LL as well, but modding as a whole is dying, especially total conversion modding. Between increased complexity, market saturation and corporate policies, total conversion mods will soon become part of gaming's past, with regular modding not too far behind. But that's a topic for another thread.
I've been itching for a good Mech game for a long time now (ever since MW4). But I have a hard time thinking anyone would bother with a serious AAA entry into the genre, unless it followed in the same vein as that abortion of a Battletech game MechAssault. The best Mech games were closer to simulators than arcade games, and simulation as a viable genre is on its deathbed.

Fiction based simulators are a dieing breed of games not because people have clearly lost interest in them, but because there is a lack of developers who are willing to actively produce them. Game developers as a whole are getting lazier and lazier with every coming generation, largely because the industry has finally reach the point where it's realized that it no longer need to appeals to niche markets in order to survive. In this day and age, games have more to do with on how they're presented in order to make a sale, rather than how much content or depth a game may have.
Which means developers/companies who would take the time, effort, or resources to produce a game that sells to a niche market are largely looked down upon by others because it's a more risky investment then creating "[Insert this high selling game] but with/in/on [x]."

Fiction based simulators are extremely constraining in terms of game design. There are also licensing issues. Not releasing a slight update to a long running game series is not laziness. I'm not sure how you can call increasing budgets and development time working on original projects "laziness." Niche markets can be extremely fickle where everyone has their opinion of how something should be and they can never agree. It's really not a great situation to work for.

Because in this day and age when most developers are owned by publicly traded corporations, ROI becomes the ONLY concern. And returning a decent ROI on a simulation game with a AAA budget is a near impossibility because the market has changed.
What's changed? PC gaming is no longer the dominant platform, and the PC is still the only place where you can properly execute a simulation-based game (without expensive peripherals which defeat the purpose of a console's reduced price). I'd dare say that while gaming in general has greatly increased in popularity over the past 5 years, the number of hardcore nerds that enjoy simulation-based Mech games has stagnated (or perhaps even diminished). And even amongst the "hardcore nerd" ranks, how many have abandoned the PC altogether to game exclusively on Consoles? Developers flock to where the money is, and increasingly the money has resided with Consoles Gaming - where simulation-based games simply cannot exist...
...at least until they stop listening to lazy couch gamers and lift their embargo on the K+M control scheme.
Okay, this isn't going the way I had hoped, I guess that is because the niches I like are not exactly popular. If I do not see a turnaround in this discussion within the next 3 posts, i will ask that this thread be locked and I or someone else will start a thread about the greatest mech games to play and will prohibit (somewhat valid) talk of the genre's demise as well as the demise of a great many other things that have made gaming great.
If you havent checked it out yet http://www.mektek.net/joomla/index.php is definately the place to go. While some of the mods can be complicated to install they are extensive, and the community is workable for online play (or at least was like 1-2 years ago, may have dried up). Not to mention they typically have links to other upcoming mech genres. I remember being linked to was that was a java based online mech game, to bad I cant find it again for the life of me Good luck, and if you find some crazy awsome underground mech game dont be silent

Honestly, you can accomplish both things here without any trouble.
On the one hand, I'll agree with the doomsayers here--we're not going to see much more of this type of game unless it's released by somebody who's not trying to hit a sales home run. It's just not a mass-market-able genre, so you're not going to see it from any big names.
On the other hand, I don't think it's unlikely that somebody out there will pick up the torch and bang out a stellar mech sim in the future, maybe even in the near future. There's a ton of niche genres that are still thriving on the PC. 4X games, hardcore war sims, and even doujin anime fighting games keep showing up. Dwarf Fortress is as niche as it gets, and it's just being made by one fucking dude, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
Somebody will make another great mech game soon enough.

Excavating an ancient thread. Guess mech games have been pretty light on the ground since one year and five days ago...
Front Mission Evolved is getting a "worldwide release" in spring 2010, according to the trailer from TGS. 8-)
Between this and the Mechwarrior reboot, it's gonna be a good year for fans of mechs that lumber around and crush things instead of flying around like jet fighters.
