EDIT: MYSTERY SOLVED! The game is "Command Adventures: Starship". Thanks to nyarla
i'm having trouble recalling this game i used to play. i think it was a dos game, where you would start out with a spaceship and then do missions which would give you credits or money to upgrade your spaceship with.
i think the missions were all human-based, so you would control your character on land to finish it.. some of the details are fuzzy, but does it ring a bell to anyone?
more details edit:
takes place in space
real time game (not turn-based)
xcom like graphics (in terms of quality level, so probably a later dos game, maybe win 3.1/95 game??)
you start with $ to buy a spaceship, go do missions to earn more $
you can trade in your spaceship to buy a new one, or customize yours
the missions i think all take place on land, where you control a guy to achieve certain objectives
i believe the missions were done in an isometric view
games that it's not (after a quick filter @ abandonia):
r-type
ridge racer

buck rogers

Megatraveller 1
Megatraveller 2

edit: some more clues from my brother who purchased the game
this is what he says:
"there is one game that fits your description. Im assuming the game you are talking about isnt nomad, or star control.
the one game im thinking about allowed you to purchase new ships, and hire individual members of your crew as well. for example, you could hire a captain, a tactical officer, as well as pick the model of the officers too...male female, etc.
as for the name of it? no idea...but i doubt you'll ever find it.
if its the same game we are talking about, i bought that one day at comp usa which would have taken the time frame to fall 1996.
even back then, i bought the game for like...nothing. think it costs nine bucks back then...no box...just a CD case. All i remember is that the name was very generic like star explorer or star field. I think the name had star in it, because i remember the name being similar to star control.
i remember vaguely what the CD looked like, and i can tell you i havent seen it in our house for years...certainly not in the past five years, and perhaps not even in the past 10 years.
thats the only game i can think about that fits your description but i dont recall ever having to blow stuff up on land. "

I actually have no idea, but do recall such a game.
3DS FC: 5343-7720-0490
it wasn't a shoot-em game. the missions on land earned you $$ and you would head back to the starbase or whatever and turn them in. you could purchase new starships or upgrade your own.
ARHGHHHH what is it???
Was it isometric, or a side scroller or vertical scroller or what?
Turn based or realtime?
3D or 2D?
edit: Realtime? Hrm.
Riiiiiiiiidgeeer Racerrrr!
Commander Keen. Keen. Keen.... Alright now its lost all meaning.
I heard that Aliens almost ate his babysitter.
Well, Syndicate was a sort of realtime version of X-Com. Was it isometric like them or side on or top down? And were you alone or did you have a squad or team? And did you have a choice of characters and/or a customisable character?
xcom and syndicate are the games that remind me the most of the land-based portions. as for choice of characters, i'm kinda fuzzy on that details. i know i'm not the only guy who played this game. i feel like one of the coolest parts was being able to buy a new space ship altogether
Edit - isometric missions mean this is a no-no.
Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten
What role did the spaceship play if the missions were all on foot?
Megatraveller 1
Megatraveller 2
Planet's Edge
Sentinel Worlds: Future Magic
Hard Nova

Starflight
?
Maybe Starflight 2?
can't find a decent screenshot, but you can customize your ship and hire crew.
edit:
These box arts may not be the ones that you remember, if indeed one of these is the right game
These games may be too old for what you're talking about , though, but they do kinda fit the description
