Of fans

Okay, I'm hoping to get some quick replies on this one.

I noticed today my computer case was getting MEGA hot. So I shut it down and when I looked inside I saw the heatsink on my CPU was caked in dirt. I cleaned it out and saw a bunch of burned, gunked up dirt underneath. I also bought a new fan on the compy case because I was sure it was off its central setting, bearing, whatever.

So I booted up the compy after this new fan install and noticed my CPU fan doing something odd. Every second / second and a half it would go

brr brr... brr brr... brr brr...

Off its bearing. It went away after a moment, and I thought it was just because the computer isn't actually shut off often.

But moments ago (now) something lightly clicked and the grinding began again, faded, came back, and then something squeaked and the fading stopped.

How soon is my fan going to die here, and how much moolah am I looking at to replace it? Best Buy doesn't carry CPU fans alone.

What socket does your computer have? If it's something recent, you can likely get an aftermarket fan rather cheaply off Newegg.

I'd look around here. Do what you can to make sure that the fan you buy will fit in your case, if it's cramped around your processor. :)

I came across this in my own search. Newegg's menu can get fucked because there's a lot of Socket 754 submenus on the side. Are they ALL going to work for socket 754 types? I have an Athlon 64 processor so I figure they all will work (in which case I'm going with the above). I just want something to work for the moment is all. An upgrade is happening within the next few months (which means new mobo and CPU).

Okay wow, this one got a lot of positive feedback. We have a winner.

Edit - Okay, the CPU fan hasn't buzzed along for a while. It's spinning, but not in error. The computer case has maintained its usual temp (kinda cool / warm). Still ordered new fan.
