What's the quality of this show like, in terms of production values and acting etc. Is this comparable to say, Lost or Prison Break (big budget as it were) or is it something more like Firefly, great story etc but low budget.

Because so far reading this thread it sounds pretty awesome. Kinda like the Village.

    Umm...watch it and see?

    Duuurrrrrr.

Maybe use the generators to power some fridges and preserve the food so you have something to eat in three weeks? But no, this is CBS and they had to have a folksy, heart-warming BBQ scene.

HA! Well next time Jericho Mayor elections come up, I know who I'm voting for! Senjustu for Mayor!!

This show is terrible. Absolutely terrible. For all kinds of reasons.

[spoiler:af96cf820e]The characters act without any reason for their actions, like when the Prison guys take the deaf girl hostage. The main character jumps out and shoots one of them, and the other guy THROWS HIS HOSTAGE TO THE GROUND and starts firing his gun ONE HANDED, rather than using her like a human shield.

Also, different people are amazingly knowledgable about random shit. Like Skeet Ulrich grabbing the black box from the plane, and magically fixing it up to a tape player in a few minutes, as well as having detailed knowledge of demolitions to blow up the mine, as well as know how radioactive fall-out works. [/spoiler:af96cf820e]

It's just a fucking soap opera set in a pseudo-post-apocalyptic crap. Fuck that show. Watch Dexter on Showtime.

    *edit* Spoiler'd, just in case.

As far as whats going on in the big picture, [spoiler:e06e8ab0f3] I can't help but think that one of the options of what may be going on would be a coup by the military? And the use of nukes on major cities was one way to allow the coup to happen easily. Otherwise there are certain elements outside helping with the coup, outside being another country.[/spoiler:e06e8ab0f3]

Well thats only just one idea of what might be going on.

Also one more idea would be:

[spoiler:e06e8ab0f3]Nukes pre planted by the soviet union during the cold war that were some how used by whatever group[/spoiler:e06e8ab0f3]

like someone said before, they're pulling a "Lost" on you. You will be addicted to the show by the time they reveal that this show is not about nukes; it's about soap and opera and your being addicted to it like a woman.

The beginning of lost was pretty interesting to follow until the second season when I gave it up. I'll give it one season before I stop watching it, earlier if something ridiculous happens

I was starting to lose interest in this show, but the last episode hooked me for a couple more to find out what the black guy's entire story is.

I agree that a lot of points just don't make any sense ("Get off this gas trailer! Because if it blows up, it's not like it won't blow up the entire gas station no matter where you're standing!") but something about it makes me want to put up with all the bullshit in hopes of finding out where the real story goes.

I can stand to watch a couple more episodes.

I gave up. Its fucking lame lame lame. With all the high concept TV shows around these days that have tight plots and interesting characters I thought that just maybe a show about the world getting nuked might be interesting but it seems they've really just really fumbled the goddamn ball with this one. I'll keep reading this thread though. At least I can keep up with the stupidity of the characters.

I predict it wont go past one or two seasons before its dumped

I'm not quite to your point yet (I'm either a patient man or I just enjoy abuse, I don't know which), but I'm definitely getting to that point. I am still willing to give it a few more episodes before completely giving up on it. This week's episode looks like it might finally start picking things up, but I thought that about the last two weeks too, so I guess we'll see.

I'll probably give it another two or three episodes. If it doesn't really start picking up the pace, I'm bailing too. Shame too, because it's a great concept. I'd hate to see it wasted. Whether it gets good or not though, it's no big deal now that I finally have new episodes of BSG again.

The black guy is actually enough to start to turn me off. I just get the feeling the show is going to go for some "conspiracy" bullshit, government involved, that kind of thing. I doubt they'll never name a foriegn attacker, not going to be very PC of them.

I hope is goes the direction of not ever naming the attackers, and just focus on what people do to survive in this new world.

It was never important where the zombies came from in the 'Of the Dead' movies, what's important is how people react to the situation. That's what I hope they do with it

Or...whatever Robert Hawkins (black secretive guy) was doing on his computer.

Could he have possibly launched the counter-offensive? Is it possible that he isn't a bad guy, just knew that it would happen and our government allowed it to happen to launch a counter-offensive?[/spoiler:6f0cd1293b]

Anywho, the show was going a bit down but that episode picked up a bit. I just wish the DHC would have announced something on TV as opposed of it just showing a podium...unless Hawkins had something to do with that too...possibly even broadcasting it from his home.

Wow.. I never thought about that. I simply assumed Hawkins was just keeping in contact with his fellow spook employee/peers. Maybe he did launch the counter-attack.. what he said to his son, "I'm working on fixing the problem.." (or something to that degree) would allude to that. Wow.. that's a pretty interesting look at it.

That would kind of explain why he has all of that equipment and why he'd be, apparently, "posted" at some kind of hick-town... a hick town near an arsenal of ICBM silos. That makes sense.

Might want to spoiler tag that.

[spoiler:026bc6cfff]It could also be that this is simply how long it took for the government to figure out who to retaliate against. Although I have to admit, I kind of like your theory of a coup. That would at least make the show interesting, as it would basically be like a nuclear civil war. It would also explain why it took the government took so long to launch a counterstrike. After all, they can't just go nuking their own country willy-nilly. They would have to take the time to determine the best strategic points to strike.[/spoiler:026bc6cfff]

Man, another lame episode, but at least the ending kind of made up for it. Judging from the previews though, next week doesn't look much better. I wish something of real significance would happen, instead of just "This week we run from fallout, this week we fight a fire, this week we get the power back", etc. And it sucks, because they include just enough cool parts, like [spoiler:026bc6cfff]Hawkins'/Jake's mysterious pasts, the nukes launching, and the downed airplanes[/spoiler:026bc6cfff] to barely keep me interested enough to watch the next week. If they would just do more with that stuff and not focus on stupid crap like they do for 90% of every episode so far, it could really be a great show.

Well, since I'm here, does anyone have theories regarding [spoiler:026bc6cfff]Jake's past? According to the file Hawkins was looking at, he'd visited several South American and Middle Eastern countries in the span of a year, and his passport was being monitored by the government. I'm starting to buy into the whole "coup" theory. It would very cool if it turns out that Hawkins works for the current government, and Jake secretly works for the group that is attempting to take control (or vice versa I guess, either way it works).

Otherwise, I'm thinking Jake may have been a Soldier of Fortune or something like that, or maybe even a full blown assassin. Remember from the Pilot episode, when Jake was driving into town and was listening to the radio, the news was talking about how the President was going to address the issue of "global violence" that night. Perhaps Jake was directly contributing to that violence by assassinating world leaders or something like that.[/spoiler:026bc6cfff]

Oh, but wait, those would make the story too cool. They have to stick to the current trend of bland and uninteresting story lines, so Jake probably just joined the boy scouts.

I'm starting to think the same thing.

If it does well and actually gets good, I'll check out the DVD and then start catching it for the second/third/whenever season it finally gets good. Too bad. They have some great concepts, and there are a few (very few) parts that look like they could actually turn into a really good storyline, but all of that has just been squandered away too much. Oh well.
