Not really, there needs to be SOME story, for me at least, its a driving factor. I'm not one of the people who can just drive around attracting cops in GTA, thats dull to me.
im not saying you shouldnt like the story or want there to be a story, im just saying that the game doesnt take itself seriously at all so why should you take it seriously either? its just gleeful meanspirited nonsense.

I have yet to come across a dick that wasn't annoying. They're kinda linked by default.

You've never met a charming dick? The kind you love to hate?
I just think you can make an overly macho, psychotic killer who doesn't murder everyone just because. That guy from prison was probably the closest thing to a person who respected him because and not out of fear and he put a bullet in his head without a seconds hesitation. To put him out of his misery sure but still, even Solid took a moment to contemplate putting a bullet in the Boss' head.
As an aside, I think some of hte map suffered from GTA4itis where the 3rd island is like an appendix. There were vast areas, normally the north east and south east areas, hell most of the map if not all below Saints Row had very little reason to visit it.

sure you can do that. there are plenty of beloved and charismatic overly macho, psychotic killers dotting the fictional landscape of whatever medium you may want to look at. thats just not what they did here, and i appreciate the change of pace for once.

While he can be funny, he and Gat are just a pair of dicks who deserve lethal injection, Gat probably more so.

I initially hated the main character and Gat, but I think I came around to them once your finish the Carlos storyline. Then, I could see myself being that sadistic asshole with those kind of events happening around me.

I personally don't like the main character. I agree with the comments about him being "hard to root for". He's kind of a villain in some respects. The main character is supposed to feel very "wronged" about what happened to him, so much so that he's blind to the fact that he's hurting the city more than helping it - in fact, he doesn't even care. He just wants power.
Gat, on the other hand, is kind of caricature. He's ridiculous and awesome and over the top. He's meant to be comedy relief. And, personally, I feel the two or three "serious" moments Gat has go over really well.

Personally, I loved the main character's rampant douchebaggery. You don't often get the chance to control a super-bastard like that who's unrepentantly evil. It's refreshing.
Well like I said, I don't need him to be deep and introspective just not an asshole. The Jokers evil and you root for him because hes insane, by all accounts your guy is sane hes just a fucking violent douchebag who sees killing as a better alternative to negotiation, no matter the person.
What pissed me off about Gat was near the end where he says he wants to go kill more cops. I don't mind killing cops in teh game but a person who goes looking for them just to murder them? Fuck that guy.
I thought all the psychotic shit the protagonist did during the game was hilarious. I liked playing as the guy. He was a huge twat and it was awesome.
Saying that, this game would have been even better if they had something like the Renegade/Paragon choices in Mass Effect.
Also, this game isn't in the nominations list in the GOTY thread. It is probably my favourite game after Fallout 3. Is there any reason for this exclusion?

The main character hasn't really bothered me that much. I've done the Brotherhood, Sons of Samedi, and about half of the Ronin missions, as well as the "extra" mission so far. I'm rather enjoying playing as him.

No, I think people root for the Joker because of his style or twisted charisma.
'Course, this is coming from a guy who's only ever rooted for one bad guy ever: Richard III. And that dude was an even bigger asshole than Saints Row 2's protagonist.
The main dude in this is awesome. It's good to actually have a bad guy protagonist, or at least a totally amoral one, and I can't think of any game that's really ever done it before.
Don't self insert for this game. When you make a character, make someone you want to see doing badass shit.
I keep saying how much I loved the dickery because I made a female character. So there wasn't anytime I thought it was me doing all this mean stuff. I only saw someone awesome girl I created being fucking badass.
edit- about cutscenes, they're all cool, just in different ways
Brotherhood cutscenes are Brutal.
Ronin cutscenes are Cool.
Samedi cutscenes are WTF.

I got this game for Christmas and am freaking loving it. The game took everything that was fun in the first one and made it even better. Already unlocked unlimited pistol, love the raptor, and unlimited shotgun. The diversions are almost as much fun as the real game. My team of personal security ninjas protect my ass as I still da hos in my murder mobile
Now if only I can figure out how to base jump and learn to land a Tetsuo after I drive up the wall of a building heh

This. All of it.
If I hadn't played the first SR, I could probably get away with not identifying too much with the main character in SR2, at least enough to maybe root for him once or twice. But because I had played SR from beginning to (very surprising) end, it made the main character here that much harder to root for. I wanted to see him get revenge
story spoilers
and when he finally did, I actually ended up feeling sorry for Julius of all people
I suppose going through what the main character went through after the events of SR1 could potentially mess someone up in the head pretty good, but what struck me odd was that rather than going for revenge in SR2 (or to at least find out who did that to him), he was just out to control the city, which seemed a bit outside of the character that was developed in the original game.
That said, both games are great and I'm very much looking forward to a third installment should Volition decide to go forward with one.
And if that happens, please bring back Mike and David from KBOOM 108 this time.

Base jumping; exit a plane or chopper.
Also, I REALLY hope Volition doesn't stop at 3. Do a new story in the same universe, keep the feel, make it awesome.
I mean a third game in the same place? Conquering it again? Its gonna get stale fast.
The way forward is a game with two cities. Stillwater's an island, so it's not that much of a stretch to have a second city across the sea only reachable by plane. The intro of the game could take place in Stillwater and in the row, with some sort of major plot development pushing you to the new city which you have to conquer and work your way back to Stillwater. Perhaps even 3 cities with Stillwater as an island and the other two connected by some countryside, San Andreas style.
I definitely don't want another game just in Stillwater, but I don't want them to leave it either. I want Stillwater plus somewhere else...

And not just any crime game, but one where you set people on fire to earn more seconds for your time trial race.
Really, depth, sympathy and humanity would have hurt the game since the over-the-top bits wouldn't be so funny any more.

This is a bad idea. Especially when doing the Brotherhood missions. Best god damn cutscenes in the game.
