I liked both the original Saints Row and San Andreas, but I would probably put the missions for both at about the same level. And I wouldn't put that level anywhere near genius. I expect the missions in 2 to be fun and about as varied as they can be in a game like this, can't ask for much more.

    San Andreas had:
Parachuting with some dudes onto a mansion out of the back of a plane. Driving a motorcycle onto a plane in mid takeoff. Using a giant helicopter to steal an armored truck with a magnetic winch. Stealing cop motorcycles and parking them on a car-carrier that is driving a circuit on a freeway. Stealing a Harrier jumpjet from an aircraft carrier and then using it in a dogfight. Etc.

He took the insta-scape route. It'd normally be longer.

I'm assuming if you choose to do the tutorial it goes the other way?

I'd guess, because I've seen vids showing different bits of the escape than that.

It's probably like Gears of War where you can go one way and pretty much go through a longer escape/tutorial, or the other which leads right to the last encounter room.

Which makes me think I might go through the tutorial, even though I'm fairly confident in my ability to be able to move my character around and use the right stick to aim at things.

    Pseudo-edit:

I don't know if anyone's interested besides me, but this horrible pirating asshole has released some videos on the Youtubes that shed some light on some things like how customizing bikes work.

Review code is here. Impressions incoming. They'll have to be vague though as I'm embargo'd til release day.

Okay, one of the male character voices is a classic east end gangster voice. Love it.

This I will find out. I've spent half an hour in character creation, and that's just creating myself - a black dude with an afro, a pretty generic character. You have to pick everything, though - your movement style, fighting style, default taunt..

Fucking teabag taunt. British guy's dialogue for the teabag is "I've got you a present.."

EDIT: Okay, out of character creation. You're given a choice, sneak out via the roof (tutorial) or charge out through the front door. Sneaking is gonna be longer, I'm guessing, but not significantly.

Jesus I can't wait for this game! Less than one week, hell yeah.

I know that alot of people will disagree with this, but I thought that Saints Row was actually better than GTA4.

    I know, I know, I am a heritic.

But I just loved SR's style. The graphics on top of the over-the-top story. I loved the fact that the story was over-the-top and didn't try to be all moody and realistic. I liked the fact that everyone was trying to be a gangstah way too much. It just added to the crazyness of it all. And the best damn radio station in any GTA type game had to b WMD-KBOOM. I would listen to that station, and nothing else.

Does anyone know who those two guys were?

And after seeing the preview videos from XBL, SR2 looks to be that much better. All the extra stuff you can do, all the side missions, hell you can even fly copters and planes around. Not to mention it has damn co-op in it!

And you can fucking tase people.

Huh, I can't seem to find who Mike and David from WMD-KBOOM are. I'm willing to agree that it is probably one of the best done satires in any of the games that happen to feature radio stations, though. I also find it interesting that're embargoing a game that was leaked last week. The only people they're hurting are themselves when they keep information about the game to strictly the jackasses that stole it.

If anyone has any questions, as long as they're outside the realms of the NDA (which basically is just no full reviews or anything close) I can answer. I'm not getting to the meat of the game, outside of all of the first tutorial sections etc.

How do the cars/bikes feel? Are they still as responsive and arcadey as the last game, or have they tried to go all GTAIV and put a learning curve into learning how to drive?

I haven't listened to that much radio yet as I've spent most of my time out of cars shooting thus far. Flicking through now though, I can't see KBOOM. However... GTA had radio stations unlock as you progressed. So it might show up.

The music selection is really, really good though.
AP who do you work for out of curiosity? And once i know, can you make me letter of the month every month?

Myself, really. I'm a uni student studying a degree in English and Journalism. In my free time, I do some writing for whoever pays and some who don't - magazines, websites, whatever. It's experience, it's good on the CV, and it helps to make a name with the PR people. Especially cause when I leave Uni I want to carry on doing this full time.

I actually don't have anyone to review this game for, but I get sent games by companies out of goodwill and friendliness of people I know. I'll probably just review it on my blog.

Everything ist just as fast, sharp and responsive as the first game. My first thought playing this was "holy crap, the steering is tight." I got used to the GTA4 slideathon in everything you could drive. Bikes are similarly responsive. You don't come off them as easily as GTA, just very arcadey.

I enjoyed SR more than the GTA games, except for GTA 3. I can't go against GTA3, but all of the others, definitely beats them. The story is easier to get into and the character creation just seals the deal.

Plus, you have Insurance Fraud, which is one of the best side missions ever.

I've said it before but GTA 3, VC and Sa are better IMO than Saints Row 1. It's so unbelievably ghetto and tries too hard to be gritty and gangsta with stupid names for the most basic of things simply to seem hardcore. The world is pretty empty and it did nothing really that SA didn't do except seem more boring.

But SR2 form the trailers alone looks like it MAY top GTA4. SR remembers that its about the audience and not about the creator wanting to make a gritty game and being worried that letting you do what you want might make it seem less gritty.

I never get the comparisons between GTA4 and SR1. The games have almost diametrically-opposed goals in mind.

I think the humor in SR1 could have been funnier as a send-up of gangster movie/GTA cliches with more restraint, especially in the earlier parts of the game, so I am curious how that plays out here. Spraying sewage on people dampens my hope a little, but we'll see how the dialog goes.

Anyway, we all know what we really want leaked as information: a review of the money clip. No one cares about the training mission. We want to know pre-release info on the clip.

Does it make you look like a baller?

Okay, awesome. This game has a zombie minigame. In your apartment there's a game console, and you can play a zombie survival game. You have most of the game's weapons at your disposal and it's just survive as long as you can. It's awesome.

Insurance Fraud looks even better this time around. Judging from one of the preview videos on XBL, you can throw someone into traffic, or as in the video, into an oncomming train!

And as for questions about the story and setting, I never thought this game wanted to be taken seriously. It seemed over-the-top on purpose.

Also, I compared this game to GTA4 because they are both next gen, "sandbox" type games. But now that I think about it, you are right desc, they are trying to do two different things.

I'm not arguing the game's story is any good or the satire is totally clever, but the game is so obviously way over the top. I'm not sure how anyone would think it was trying to be taken as a serious gangster culture kind of story.

They're trying to do different things, but SR is pretty close to what GTA was trying to do previously. GTA 4 I feel is a worse game than SR simply because it tries to be realistic and fails so very horribly.

Technically GTA does some stuff better, but isn't as fun.

The best thing any of these games ever did was the desert area in GTA:SA. I loved that place so much and it just looked the part, it was a shame it was so devoid of function.
