For 4 months I have been trying to get my newest pc (a Dell inspiron 530) to work properly, but the graphics card inside keeps overheating. I have had an ATI Radeon x1650 inside the inspiron since January, and I didnt get any problems until may. I dont have alot of money so i tried using it with the case open and a fan blowing in, but it still overheats. I have run temp reading programs and when it happens the temps read normal levels of heat. Last night my new PSU came in the mail ( OCD stealthXstream 600w something or other) and even with a fan that could easily cut through a grapefruit the problem still persists, albeit the pc now takes a little longer to crash. my PC specs are:
System Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
System Model: Inspiron 530
Operating System: Windows XP Home Edition
Memory: 2046MB RAM
motherboard: G33/ICH9R chipset
Card name: Radeon X1650 Series
just tell me if you need more info and ill try my best to find it
I would check to make sure the heatsink is fastened to the card properly (no gaps) and that the fan spins at 100% all the time. RivaTuner will help you do this.

i have it running now, but im not sure what i should be watching for
Have you checked to see what speed the fan is set to run? Also have you cleaned around the fan and heatsink with compressed air?
as far as i can tell the fan speed is ok, and i wouldnt have changed it, but both the cpu's heatsink and the vid cards are kinda dirty, so ill get some compressed air tomorrow and blast it
You need to go into RivaTuner and find the tab for changing the fan speed. There should be a slider or a box where you can type in the number. Put it on 100% and apply. Then do whatever, come back, and tell us if it overheats.
ok after some cleaning and applying te thermal coolant the core temp was 55c on idle. by turning the fan too 100% its now 90 and rising. is that normal?
update: its beet at 116-119 for about 10 minutes now, and i havent seen a crash yet. Should i put the fan back to normal now?

what i described happened AFTER i applied thermal coolant to both the cpu heatsink and the heatsink on the video card, so im fairly certain that its making good contact
so i guessing im gonna have to fork up 50 bucks to get this thing looked at?
Oh dear god that temperature is going to blow the pc up man!
Is that the temperature of the video card or the processor when you say core?
That really is not good and has probablly caused some damage.
Usually you don't want the tempatures going above 80 degrees
im going by what rivatuner says, im assuming its checking the processor's temp
edit: of course, this overheating ONLY occurs when i have the monitor plugged into the video card port, nothing bad happens when i use the thing as Dell intended. The problem with this is the only game that the default graphics card lets me play is WoW, and since i was hoping this would be my gaming PC that kind of ruins the purpose of owning this piece of shit. Maybe i should try the fan thing without the video card plugged in, to see if the ssame thing happens?
ok, seeing as how i cant seem to access the monitoring thing without being plugged into the card, those temps i was referring to were from the card i guess. does that mean i just needed a new card the whole time?
You can try rma'ing card it may be your problem. Do you smell anything burning?
It seems like such a weird problem. Sometimes you can check your voltages in the bios, check those to see if there ok

double-dog edit: finally crashed

No. That's baffling.
I hope you're not still trying to use it now.
