How do you live with only one computer. What do you do if something happens to it and you have a raid that night?

Well, as someone who went through this twice, not attend.

But I'm not building a second gaming machine just for a backup. That's retarded.

When I was going to upgrade my last computer, my boyfriend talked me into buying a second case so I can keep my last build together. That's sort of my back up, I guess. It's not like I purpose-built a second desktop as backup. And I used to like to game on my laptop because I like to be able to prop myself up in bed, and it made it easy for gaming with friends.

Ok, this is where I reveal myself to be a poseur. What's the reason behind having multiple configs of XP? What do you do that necessitates different environments?

Different Microsoft CTPs mostly. They've got a long and rich history of breaking Visual Studio when you try to uninstall them to install a newer version, so it's never worth the hassle.

I've also got separate 2005 and 2008 VMs just for cleanliness' sake, and another with a bunch of Oracle 6i tools for working on some legacy stuff at work.

I've also got VS 2005 on my native Vista box for XNA work, because that needs the hardware acceleration.

edit: It's just nice to have a seperate VM for seperate tool-sets, instead of crufting it all together and bogging everything down.

My toys are generally things that I want to learn how to use/set up/admin but I don't want to mess with on my existing machines. One of them's another Ubuntu server that I was trying to do something with Ruby on, another I set up to try out ssh tunnelling, and one of them is Slackware, I forget what that was for.

Invariably I set them up, then forget the passwords or some kind of critical set up information, and end up deleting them or starting over.

Plus when 64bit xp still had a lot of compatibility issues, it was a good idea to keep a second boot of 32 bit for some games.
