There should be some sort of award for the really creative/thoughtful presents, like the guy that had a treasure chest that played the zelda chest sound when it opened, or for the person that sent a Bleach calender to the guy who got bleach from the Canadian customs.

I'm thinking of throwing my hat in the ring this year, though I'm super paranoid about getting people gifts that they might already have. I already have a few gift ideas in mind.
It was a blast to put together, despite fears that it would be mistaken for a bomb by the postal dudes.
My SS's gift (a SantaSack-load of Nintendo plushies/figurines/accouterments) has come in way handy in decorating my office in the house I moved into right after getting them.
I can't wait for the festivities to go down this year. C'mon Capn', make it happen!

Same. Also, since I'm in the UK, if I were sending a DVD or something (I figure the original series of The Office or something like Extras might go over well with some people), that might be a problem as they'd be Region 2, and the Santee might have issues with that.

Just put a region list in the op, or assume people on a games and technology forum have some sense about compatibility (hahaha no).
I looked through the 2007 SS thread, and there were some seriously awesome gifts. It will be fun trying to live up to those high standards and spreading some holiday cheer for '08.
Hurry up, official thread! I want to start doing some festive stalking of my own!

We talked about this last year, and pretty much everyone has a DVD drive in their PC, and whilst DVD drives aren't region free, there are plenty of media players that ignore region restrictions.
A lot of more modern DVD players are region free too (even if people don't realise it).
I may take part in this little swapfest of yours. If ever that check of mine re-arrives from the insurance company! So it depends on if I get my money or not.

This is the first year for me to seriously consider Secret Santa participation. I hesitate only for fears of getting a really foreign country, shipping at expense and getting my gift held at customs for whatever silly reason. The last fear is sleuthing out their interests, only to get something they already have.
I may just go ahead with it when it seems like too much fun to pass up this year!

You know if people are so scared of getting some insane foreign country where shipping will cost more than the gift why don't we set up a system when everybody that is going to do it signs up they list the country that they are in and if they are willing to ship to another country or prefer to have somebody within their own? That way when matching up the person doing all this can match up US people with US Santa and UK people with UK Santa, etc, except for the people that say they don't mind shipping overseas and then they get put wherever to fill in any gaps.

isnt this how we already handle it?
No. Part of the rules are if you don't want a foreign Santee, DON'T SIGN UP. Or something to that extent.
I wouldn't mind an option to split it up, since most of the people who didn't get gifts last year were due to packages getting lost in customs.

If it is then why is everybody so scared of getting somebody overseas? I keep seeing people posting OMG I want to do it but I'm so scared of getting somebody in another country and it will cost me ten billion dollars to ship at that point.

Now why does it have to be so restrictive? I mean it is only holding more people that want to participate back. What possible purpose might this rule have other than it might be 'neat' to get something from somebody in another country? That's why I think we should have the option. I believe more people would enter if they could choose to be a Santee from within their own country or any part of the world if they so choose.
What possible purpose might this rule have other than it might be 'neat' to get something from somebody in another country?
It also maintains the randomness and anonymity of the affair. We don't want a situation where, if two people live in the same country, they're more or less guaranteed to get each other.
Nor should people be segregated into a smaller Secret Santa pool of foreign forumers and a handful of people who don't mind paying extra, because that's pretty much like not participating in Secret Santa with everyone else.
I think the best thing we could possibly do at this point is to just figure out for sure who is running the show this year and just let them run it the way they want to. I mean seriously, people who haven't even bothered to read the whole thread before posting have stirred up the "do we want to require international shipping" debate almost half a dozen times now, so at this point, the thread is probably becoming counter-productive.
My only concern re: foreign Santees is that Canada Customs HAAAATES me. I quite literally have some sort of black flag up at the Customs office where every Canada-US package I send/receive gets dismantled and repackaged, tacking on weeks of delays and usually a cost of some kind for me/the recipient. That sounds like an exaggeration but it is real, a holdover from years back where I had a job wherein I would receive 4+ packages a week from Texas.
Given the already congested nature of the mail in the months surround Xmas, I'd like to avoid that if possible.
Having said that, I've had good experiences these last couple years with the Secret Santa so I'll do it regardless of the border issue. It just...makes me nervous is all.

Wait, are they only doing that because they are seeing it's from you? Put a friends return address on it if that's the case.

Make sure you let them know in case they get a call about the package anyway.

I just picture my friend going to the post office to pick up the package, whistling innocently, and the clerk is giving them the evil eye. "This wouldn't be for...someone ELSE....would it?"

Besides being a member for a certain period of time, are there any requirements for participating, i.e. a minimum number of posts? I spend FAR more time reading on this forums then the two times I’ve posted.

No, but you might want to invest some time into making some posts, just so it's a tad easier for your santa to stalk you.
edit: making post? hahaha

I am totally packing the gift the same way I did last year. I wrapped the gifts, but I also included a Christmas card. On the envelope of the card was a picture of my Santee's avatar, and inside the card I wrote a note and signed it with my username and a picture of my avatar.

It'll be so funny when two English forumers get each other, open their gifts and are like "Fruit Gums? I can get these any time!"
This is why I'm kind of hoping I get someone from the States, because it makes things a whole lot easier for me. That said, I had a brilliant idea for something I can give to anyone.
