Games similar to Devil May Cry

I like the 3rd Person 3D Brawler genre. Especially when it comes to intricate combo systems. Unfortunately, the only instance of this genre I own is Devil May Cry. It's difficult. I'm not "good" at games. Are there any games with a similar system that aren't so punishing?

Edit: I just realised that I should probably point out that I own God of War, which is the other major title in the genre.

The problem with God Hand is that it's just a game about punching people.

But there's kicking people too! And weirdness.

Also: Seconding Ninja Gaiden. Do it.

God of War, Heavenly Sword (which is the best 5 hours of throwing hats ever) and God Hand immediately spring to mind. You'll need a PS2 and PS3 for the above though (Heavenly Sword is only on the PS3).

Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2 as well, but then again you aren't into games that surprise sex you :P

I probably should have mentioned that I only have a PS2, a Gamecube and a Wii. And yeah, I tend to give up on brutal games pretty quickly.

I could give God Hand a try, but it strikes me as more of a 3D beat em up than a story-based brawler. Correct me if I'm wrong. I just get that vibe from it.

There is a definite story to it, but it's more just funny. Very aware of it's medium. The characters in it are all brilliant too.

You said you have God of War and Devil May Cry. Perhaps I'm being a bit silly, then, when I suggest

-God of War 2. Better than the original.

-Devil May Cry 3. Better/harder/cooler/sexier than the original. Lady pwns, story's great, cutscenes are mindblowing, combat is better. Just be sure to get the Special Edition, 'cause the original version has Normal mode as the JP Hard mode.

-God Hand. ...is a lot more tactical than people would lead you to believe - it's also a helluva lot harder than the original DMC.

-Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Is an open-world story-driven brawler with an incredible sense of power and freedom, excellent combat, art direction and audio. It's not as tight as DMC in terms of risk-and-reward, but if you want a crazy action game and you don't have this, you're just being silly.

I enjoyed Rygar on the PS2, although it's pretty much the poor man's DMC. I haven't played it in a long time, so I'm not sure how well it stands up these days. Also, I never completed it.

And the voice acting is horrid, but that shouldn't matter too much.

Of course I own Ultimate Destruction. It's a fool who doesn't.

And you might notice that the difficulty of the first DMC is what prompted me to look for a similar game that doesn't feature as much rape.

Ninja Gaiden isn't a game, its a digital furnace, in which the virtual chaff is burnt off, separating the boys from the real men... and the Japaneses.

DMC3 and God of War both have more forgiving difficulty curves. DMC is just hard naturally, but DMC 3, especially the special edition has a wider and more varied degree of difficulty (from quite easy to omgrape).

DMC4 I'm told has an even better difficulty curve because of the new character with a helpful mechanic.

I haven't played the previous games, but as a newb to the series, I can definitely attest that I was able to play the game through, learning the tricks and tactics as I went. Then you just keep re-playing at harder and harder difficulty levels, and you go back a level one day and you say "This guy? This guy used to give me problems?", and proceed to beat his face into the ground.

Unless it's really difficult for you, I do recommend starting off on Devil Hunter as opposed to Human difficulty though. You want to give yourself some challenge otherwise the game's just not as fun.

EDIT: Oh and bonus points since it's also on the PC with a new (awesome) mode and "turbo" feature for the truly hardcore (not me). You can try the demo to see if it'll run OK, the demo's actually a pretty good benchmark.

Get God Hand. While the game is hard it has a far better balanced difficulty than either Ninja Gaiden or DMC and also feels far more rewarding when you get better at it.

It's a shame you don't have an Xbox because I would have suggested Otogi 1 & 2 which are pretty much my favourite games on that system.

I hate the way the AI has instant knowledge of whatever you're about to do. They don't have reaction times. If you mistime a dash, or aim it in to them, they'll do their charge up-guard-breaking move and take off a massive slice of your life. Because they knew where you were going before you did!

Stuff like that permeates the game. And it's revolting, and cheap.

I guess I'll look into picking up DMC3 then. As long as it doesn't stop me dead in my tracks with a stupid boss that I can't beat because you have to do everything right the first stupid time or he kills you for being so stupid then I'll enjoy it. Also the whole expanded fighting styles combo system intrigues me.

I'll just add Ninja Gaiden as well, but as most people have mentioned, it is the gaming equivalent to fist fighting a velociraptor on top of a flaming car.

You get disembowelled and roasted at the same time and the Raptor gets a nice medium-rare steak?

Something to that degree yes, provided the velociraptor doesn't also shoot lasers with it's eyes. Which is something thats bound to happen knowing Ninja Gaiden.

Just be damned sure you get the Special Edition. The Special Edition has a normal Normal Mode and eas(ier) Easy Mode. The original release of DMC3 does not.

    Seriously.

When DMC3 came out, I rented it. Brought it home, and spent 3 hours trying to get past the 2nd level miniboss. Three hours. I tried, and tried and tried. And I took it back to the bloody store.

    Get the special edition.

The special edition has tons more replayability as well. Vergil mode is fun and the Bloody Palace is a nice distraction.

While Ninja Gaiden and God Hand are widely considered 'harder' games, I've beaten both but haven't beat DMC despite spending more time with it than either Ninja Gaiden or God Hand. I felt that NG and GH pit me against harder enemies, but gave me much better tools to deal with them; Ryu and Gene's movements always felt responsive and smooth, whereas my primary struggle in DMC was always dealing with dodges that never seemed to move me where I need to go.

Also, nothing in NG or GH has frustrated me to the extent of Nightmare(?) in DMC. In that fight more than any, I felt like I was fighting the boss with the wrong set of tools, a feeling I never got with NG or GH.

So basically what I'm saying is get God Hand because it's way better than DMC.

Edit: Another thing about God Hand is that the last few battles are simply glorious; I doubt anyone who's criticizing it has played the later bosses.

I doubt they got past the first level. I can't imagine anyone who likes 3rd person action games playing god hand for any decent length of time and calling it a bad game, let alone saying it's worse than Ninja Gaiden (which is horrifically overrated)
