I got a crappy ending. I think I'm going to pick up from a previous save and try to do a few more quests and see if that won't improve it.
No matter what ending I get I'm going to start a new game and do all the side quests....I did a couple in the first area but I've mostly been doing the main storyline.
It will be annoying to go back to the shitty weapons at the beginning...once you get an AK though all is good.
Well, hate to post a "will my rig run it" question but I'm really salivating over this game. Anyway, I have an Athlon XP 2600 (2.07ghz), 1.5gb DDR ram, and a Geforce 6800 Ultra 256mb running Windows XP, will it be enough?
I'm really only worried about my CPU, so I thought I'd ask.

I'm running it in DX9 mode with medium settings and some tweaks at 1024x768 on a 2.2Ghz Athlon XP, 1GB of RAM, and a 7600 GS on Windows XP Pro. It hits some hiccups but if it gets to the point where it's unplayable I can turn it to DX8 mode with everything on high at 1280x960 and it runs like greased lightning.
quest and we killed the leader, but only one Duty guy survived the attack. He's not the guy that was going to pay me so now I have this active quest sitting in my quest list that I can't complete.
I did a quicksave as the wall exploded and reloaded that save every time the leader ("1 is down, 2 assuming command!") died.
3 hours.
I redid the same procedure for three damn hours, then I finally went to bed, beaten by the game.
Then I did it for 1.5 more hours in the morning, then I finally beat it with 6 guys alive, the leader among them.
I immediately ran left and shot the sniper furthest away, then the one in the center (I had 40 rounds in my L81A1 rifle, AP rounds) then ran back down the middle road uncaring about enemy fire. I ran up to the house, shot the siren (it's annoying) and proceeded to toss 15 grenades into the building (top/bottom floor) and killed the final sniper.
After that I had to run around like a loon and stab/shoot the rest of the 20 soldiers in the face.
The reward is
8000 RU and 30 rounds for the Duty's gray assault rifle, yay.
Running somewhat smoothly in 1152x834 and medium settings with a 5900XT, ADM64 3400+, and a giggaram. The biggest slowdowns are transitions from closed environment to open environment, and my mouse lags frustratingly in the loot/trade screen. Otherwise, perfectly fine.
About the Russian - whereas the English translations are somewhat tongue-in-cheek, knowing Russian makes the whole game 14814100 times more immersive. Signs, people yelling, the guys around the campfire telling jokes (yes, they tell jokes), everything is in context and awesome. I have yet to hear stalkers say anything directly related to in-game events, but they did mention a couple of stalkers going artifact hunting at 9 A.M. the next day. Unfortunately, since my video card can't pull the dynamic lighting, I have no clue when 9 A.M. is. Is there some sort of watch anywhere?
My quicksaves aren't working. They refuse to load from the load menu, so i'm forced to make full saves periodically.
i had that, quickload wasn't working. Turns out it was the 'can't have a space in the pathname' glitch. I'd made an account specifically for playing games (runs faster than my main), and i'd put a space in the name of it. Made a new one today instead, worked a charm. Give it a whirl:)
also, i found that the crazy rain/flashes/triangles all over the place glitch was being caused by exiting to the menu. It would be fine, i'd go to the menu, back to the game, and they'd be there. Hope that's fixed in the patch.
im trying to move on out of garbage and head to the west. i just finished the plot mission at the warehouse, but when i try to reach the next zone theres a whole shit ton of bandits. i'm trying to slowly take them out, but it feels like they're just respawning on the spot. is that the case, or are there really over 10-15 of them waiting?
i think garbage is the area i'm trying to get into right now..i need to get in to advance the main quest..but every time i get near the radiation pretty much insta kills me since all i have is the starting leather jacket

I think one of the side quests from the Cordon that involves looting a stash gives you a decent stalker suit if you look around.

i suspect this is where i am. I was just wandering near the guards to the tunnel, found my way through and was like "well, here i am". Wandered around, met some guys, shot some dogs, found someone i was meant to, got some directions then RADIATION DEATH. I think i need to go back and look for a suit

So I'm still really, really early in, since I'm using most of my time just to tweak things. Anyway, can anyone give me a bit of direction here?
It's basically the second mission you go on - The one where you have to meet the journeyman. When I get there, he's dead, and there's electric death in a tunnel nearby. Not radiation, but electric anomalies. After this, I lose all waypoints, and have no idea what I'm supposed to do. The PDA won't give me one, either.
In other news, if you are still playing the game, stay away from the official developer forums. I've been browsing around there for ways to fix bugs, like the rain bug... But some fuckwad spoiled the whole game with five goddamned words in his thread subject line.
...but if it gets to the point where it's unplayable I can turn it to DX8 mode with everything on high at 1280x960 and it runs like greased lightning.
How do you switch to DX8 mode?
Select static lighting. While I haven't beaten that part yet if you look in your diary after you examine the dead stalker it tells you how to get past the electricity.

or you can just run through the tunnel screaming like a little girl mashing the medkit key ;-)

I had similar problems early on, just nail some vodka or anti-radiation drugs until it goes away. I think you can see a radiation bar in the inventory screen.
Also, do you have any artifacts equipped that effect radiation resistance? I think that's what was getting me killed near the start.

The problem is 10 or so radiation meds only keep me alive for 2 minutes or so, as soon as i take one my radiations back up to full. I'm not using any artifacts yet because while i have a bunch they all decrease radiation and it seems like i get radiated if something so much as sneezes at me with them on
Before you enter the garbage area there is an overturned truck near the path that will kill you if you get close. If you stay on the path you should have no problem avoiding radiation at least early on.

no, where the hell are you finding artifacts? i've not seen one yet

Check out the purple icons on your map. The stashes usually have artifacts and sometimes they're just lying on the ground out in the open. They're usually located in the center of an anomaly so you'll want to approach with caution.
So..do you ever get significant amounts of ammunition for anything except the pistol? i'm in the process of retrieving the military documents and i dont think i've ever had more than 30 bullets for the AK, viper smg or 40 or so shotgun shells (but the shotgun is so bloody useless it doesnt count) yet i have over 400 rounds for my pistol
edit: on a completely unrelated note, while stripping my inventory tryign to figure out where all my weight was coming from i found out with my inventory completely empty, armor, weapons off etc. It still counts 1.3 of weight o.O damnit, i need the full 50 kilograms worth!

In the first Garbage camp, loot baddies and bust open the boxes in the little shed area. Ammunition galore.

in the centre of an anomaly? well how the dickens are you supposed to reach that, then?

I've just given up because it crashes without fail every time I save it twice.
Also, whar be quicksave. I really need some quicksave up ins.
PDA I think?
(potential easter egg)
Friend pointed it out. Feckin' awesome.

If you haven't shot at them yet, they'll let you pass for 500 bucks. You can always shoot them later, they're easy pickings with a scoped rifle.

I know but this way I can take their guns and stuff now.
