Just beat the game. Fuck that was awesome, but I was hoping you could keep playing and exploring after you finish it. Is Pripyat ever not stormy? And why is it never night-time? I have dynamic lighting to full and lighting distance at max...

Alright, it seems like 90% of the time I play the game, unless I am looking straight up and down it gives me about a frame every three seconds. However, occasionally on startup the game will work, and it will move smoothly and without a single hiccup.
Anyone know what the fuck is going on? Becuase this is bloody killing me.

holy shit..one of the scariest moments i've had in a video game in a long time...all the better for it not even being scripted!

i'm walking down all these abandoned dark hallways with emergency lights flickering in an underground complex, i hear these screams and groans every so often but nothing ever materialized so I didnt think anything was going to show up..then all of a sudden i hear this loud screech behind me, spin around and at the far end of the dark corridor is this hunched over vaguely humanoid shape..which proceeds to pummel me with phsycic attacks that make me lose control of my gun and my vision go blurry as I spray bullets down the hallway hoping to randomly hit and kill it...it mushed my brain... whatever the hell it was

Here's a scary as fuck thing that happened to me in Pripyat.
I was with the big stalker group assaulting the city, killing all the Monolith soldiers and such. Eventually we made it to the underground car parking lot where a bunch more soldiers were at. Once we cleaned them all up, the leader said "Stalker, let me have a word with you". I go and talk to him, and as i'm reading his message he gets shot in the head and drops to the floor, interrupting the chat box and making it impossible for me to get the reward. I wildly turn around and 4 more guys just piled into the place on the other end, and more chaos ensues. One of the coolest moments in recent memory, and it was completely unscripted.

yeah that is scripted actually. it happens every time you do that mission.

So, is there anyway to keep the stalkers alive in the military raid that starts as soon as you enter Agropom? I have the Viper 5, my pistol and a shotgun, with enough ammunition, but the military wipes the floor with the stalkers every single time, not to mention they take care of me in short work. If there's nobody in the raid that I need to worry about, I'll just take my time, but if there's someone I need to talk to then I need some hints on how to help them all survive.

And also... Should I hit the Dark Valley before Agropom (Documents/Mole)? Can I even do that? Or better yet, is there anything worth finding in the garbage? I'm pretty good with the weapons I have, but they really blow, and I'd like to be better armed.

aww..boo urns..oh well..awesome scripting then =p ..on an unrelated note..is the "save mole" task important? because..i saved him..but it looks like it didnt register..and now he's standing outside a military base and if i go anywhere near him he runs in, dies instantly as he comes face to face with about 12 guys with machine guns and i fail the task...

For people having trouble with getting solid framerates with the full dynamic lighting, I found this custom user.ltx file over on the arstechnica forums (look for the posts by NivenhBro). He basically turned down the texture LOD to prevent the parallax and environment mapping from murdering your video card. The game still looks great, so if you're having performance trouble on your mid-range rig when using the full dynamic lighting I recommend giving it a shot.

Your user.ltx file can be found in c:\documents and settings\all users\documents\STALKER-SHOC. Be sure and make a backup copy of the file just in case and also you'll want to re-do your controls afterwards as NivenhBro's keybinds are a little weird. Here's the file:

So, here's a thing: my crosshairs got all screwed up. Instead of four solid bars, now it's a solid bar and three dots. I haven't changed anything since last night, when it was working just fine. Now, it looks like this (spoiled for h-scroll, nothing spoiler-worthy in the picture):

the only thing i could think of would be to try toggling display crosshair to off, loading up a game, then going back into the options and toggling it back on..oh and try toggling your graphics to one setting, i.e medium/high and then back to wherever they are, that fixed my crosshair problem when it stopped displaying completely

Crashes are caused if you are running vista and have dynamic lighting on. Personally, I don't see a point in playing the game with it off, when my computer is very much capable of having it enabled, and with lighting and atmosphere in general being a major point of the game. So I'm waiting for the patch.

Runs suprisingly well on my ancient machine (AMD 2200+, 256 MB Radeon 9550, 2 gig shitty RAM), if anyone with an old computer was considering it. Not much I can turn on - basic lighting, full detail, 800x600, NPC flashlights, bit of anisotropic - but it's pretty playable. And considering Oblivion was a slideshow inside the opening jail cell I'm quite happy. Looks more like an XBox game from a few years back than anything else (with a bit more detail, I guess), but it's nice nonetheless (love those skies!) and still goddamn atmospheric.

I'm playing it with a 2400+, 1GB of RAM, and a 6800 Ultra and after the ini tweak, it's running surprisingly well. I've got 1024x768 (which I run all games at), full dynamic lighting, full view distance, and full light distance. I've got the grass and shadows turned down and no AA (which I usually don't use anyway), and textures on medium. I'd say I'm probably averaging around 30 fps, whereas 20 is playable to me.

Getting sidetracked and wandering = huge fucking scary journey.

Warning, wall of text. Only really spoilers if you haven't explored the world much, I'm not that far in the game.

So I snuck into the base in Agropop and stole the plans. I REALLY didn't like the look of that hole I was supposed to go into, and I was at 49.9/50 encumberance, so I decided to swing by the bar up north and turn in the plans and sell my shit.

Well, I got there, and some guy wanted me to swing by the western part of the area and grab his family rifle for him. I figured 'what the hey, it's a short hop, I can grab his rifle and then head back out for Strelok's hole.' I wasn't counting on all the goddamn snipers. So I play American Gladiators to get to their building, kill them all and cream my pants over my new gun, and proceed forward. THEN I get a call telling me a scientist wants me to escort him.

I'm an honest STALKER, so I bust my ass over to him (getting lots of ammo for my new firepower on the way) and end up getting him away from all the killers. There's a lot of things I was counting on attacking us on the way. The one thing I was not counting on was FUCKING ZOMBIES. The scientist dude told me to follow him to his lab for a radiation suit. I figured, hell, I need one of those eventually anyway, so I followed him.

On the way to the lab, I got attacked by these... things. I barely even noticed them until one of them growled at me and I clicked on my nightvision. They shamble along the ground and leap at you after roaring like a lion on PCP. What are those? I picked up my radiation suit and a BOOMSTICK and started my trek back to the bar. On the way, I got attacked by the invisible Cthulhu monster that I've read about in this thread. Ironic that I encounter so much freaky shit while I was trying to AVOID being scared by not going into Strelok's stash.

I hate all of you people who are enjoying the game, because I can't enjoy it due to them not supporting Vista. I really want that patch, but I wonder how long that will be. I have a feeling that it'll be awhile, for some reason. I hope they prove me wrong...

i'm actually running it on vista now..i can only do the middle dynamic lighting whatever its called, and my computer has enough power to do full dynamic under xp no problem but oh well its playable without any crashes/glitches for me at least..except vertical sync doesnt work..and thats driving me crazy

i'm also running it on vista just fine, no crashes and no glitches. fluke? you decide.
It seems random who is getting the crashes and who isn't

Both of you guys post your OS type & Graphics Card. I'm trying to narrow it down.

I get tons of crashes w/ Vista Home Premium and an 8800GTX
    business with a 7900gt

Well, THQ admits there's an issue with a game and Vista and that it'll be resolved with the first patch. My machine is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, 2GB of memory, 8800GTX, and Vista Ultimate. Runs great, but I can't enjoy the game because of the crashes.

Congrats on finding your first snork!
Now you know one more thing that can happen to people that spend too much time too far into the Zone. There's a reason they're wearing gas masks and still have on pants. It's not because they looted them from a corpse.

God, this game has consumed me. I found what has become my favorite gun ever:
    VLA.jpg

Strange what you find burning in a barrel. Apparently there's a sniper version of it, too. Found a silenced Dragunov as well, but hardly any ammo for it. Did you know that as long as no one sees you do it, you can kill people with a silenced gun (or the knife) and no one cares? Heheh.

    Oh, and
I find the best way to kill those annoying psychic controller guys is to sprint up and stab them in the face. Secondary attack with the knife is really powerful.

There shouldn't be "versions" of guns in the game. I mean, they simply have attachments on them. You should be able to buy these attachments yourself at some point, but I haven't gotten that far due to the Vista crash. That's one feature they talked about a lot through development. Perhaps they removed it and now you simply find or buy guns as is instead of upgrading them with attachments. At the very least, you can upgrade your guns online.

The upgrades are there. At least scopes are. I haven't found anything else I can pull on or off a gun yet, but that may or may not change. Different kinds of scopes can only fit on certain guns, so just because you have a scope doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to use it.

So for those people who actually bought the game, have you tried out multiplayer yet? I was in the beta and it was a blast. I'm not hearing a single word about people playing online in here...

There are, though. There's a "sniper SGI 5K" you find off some later guards, that is like the normal SGI 5K but with a non-removable scope. There's the aforementioned VLA assault rifle and the VSS sniper rifle. You also find guns that have been upgraded with things like faster firing speeds, which as far as I know you can't do yourself.

You get scope and grenade launcher attachments that you can stick onto different guns, but not all guns will take them. You're right, I think some stuff got cut.

So for Night Vision and Flashlights, are these items you have to find, or should they be available by default? I'm playing with Dynamic Lighting Off (and the Direct X 8 renderer) and I'm really in need of a headlamp/flashlight. When I had to go underneath Agropom there were a few parts where I couldn't see ANYTHING and I have a feeling this was due to the renderer. And yet, after going to the Yantar lab and the Stalker bar I still haven't found a freaking flashlight, which makes me wonder if some graphic setting needs to be turned on for the flashlight key to function.

You have the flashlight from the beginning. I don't know if static lighting disables it, but I do know if your "lighting distance" slider is all the way down it won't work.

Nightvision comes built into certain suits -- the STALKER suit and the science suits off the top of my head. Any suit that shows a helmet should have it.

The bartender in the bar is probably the next big trader.
