There is another way through the military blockade that I just tried, couldn't be bothered with the electric tunnel and they would have destroyed me in a firefight. I went up to one of the guys that shout to you as you get close and shot him point blank. He went down and I ran back to the abandoned mill and started taking random shots as they approached, then I ran out the back and circled back round to the blockade while they were moving in on the mill. It was night when I did it, which probably helped a bit too.
There's actually a much easier way to get past the military. To the right of their little oupost is a hill. At the top of this hill is the train tracks. The barbed wire is cut, so if you stay far enough away and to the right that the military can't see you, you can pass right by them, since they have a hard time seeing you on the hill, and over the train tracks. You'll be right where you need to be with no tunnel and no killing.
IF this is the blockade I'm thinking off. You know you can just go up and pay them 500 rubles?

Man, I'm so sick of finding stash info and then going and not being able to find the stash. This has happened twice in the first village, both stashes in 'cellars'. I've searched for quite a while and I found jack.

By cellar they mean attic, which you can usually get to by a ladder somewhere near the stash.
So, it still ain't working. Patched it, disabled EAX and Defragmented my hard drive. Now it just seems to crash randomly occasionally. I've basically given up now, any other help to stop crashing short of upgrading my computer?
For those who didn't see it:
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Hard Drive: 160 GB Total
Video Card: ATI Radeon X300 128MB
Running it at 1024x786 at Medium/Static Lighting, would it help to drop the graphics or am I screwed anyways?

Haha, yeah, it is a game from Europeland. They're so backwards! Gotta' remember that when you play it.

You can do that too, but running past with no conflict and no anomalies is easier. Also, free.

Vista? Giganticus pasted a patch to fix the crashing for Vista users, but you may as well try it if you don't have it. Here's the fix:
* (You'll need to be an Administrator)
* First, you'll need to grab and install Visual Studio C++ Express from Microsoft. It's free so don't sweat it.
* Once installed, you'll need to update it.
* Backup the XR_3DA.exe file. Just in case.
* Start -> Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition -> Visual Studio Tools -> Visual Studio 2005 Command Prompt
* Navigate to your STALKER directory.
o If you don't know how to navigate in DOS, follow this:
o "cd c:\Program Files\" ENTER
o usually it's "cd THQ" ENTER
o "cd s" don't press enter, press tab and it will cycle through the directories till it gets to STALKER, without you having to type the entire longassed name. Press enter once it's come up.
o "cd bin" ENTER
* "editbin.exe /LARGEADDRESSAWARE XR_3DA.exe" ENTER. Should come up with a Microsoft copyright or trademark thingy. This means success. Check the modified date/time on your XR_3DA.exe to make sure.
* "BCDEDIT /Set IncreaseUserVa 3072" ENTER. Should say "Operation Completed Successfully" or something similar.
* Make sure that your RAM + Virtual Memory total is over 3 gigs. It should be normally, but make sure.
* Restart Vista.
Also, you could try clearing out your page file, too.

I like to walk up to the Major (the most experienced guy there and the one you bargain with) without a gun drawn. Talk to him (if you want) and then just pull out the shottie and give 2 to the chest. So fun!
Once he's down it's not so bad. The others are rookies and experienced. Just sit behind some machinery/cover, lean out and pistol them till their down. Make them come out of cover by staying in cover for a few seconds. I usually only need a couple bandages

I don't really know if this deserves spoilers, but whatever.
I usually get on the train track and shoot down on them with that stubby akm then run around and pick off the rest when I'm out of akm ammo. I shoot the patrol near the village and loot them for the early guns.
So, i was doing well graphics wise. I killed Mole and jacked his tight rifle, and i went into the basement tunnels.
OH WAIT! Choo Choo! Hop on the Chug-Train!!
I dont know if it is the lighting in the place, but the outside areas i get great FPS, but when i went down i got HORRIBLE FPS which makes the aiming really squishy.
What do you recommend when venturing into the basement?
You know what's really fun? Stumbling through Pripyat and helping out random stranded Freedom clearing teams.
I love my guns. I haven't patched yet, but I have three rifles and Big Ben - so I don't know what people are talking about when they say the weight limit is too low. You just have to keep supplies to a minimum and mostly scavenge off of your enemies for medical/food. When I started the game I constantly collected everything, but now I only pick up ammo when I'm depleted, and I use everything else I find right there on the spot.

So uh...Weird thing just happened to me, though I think it might have been intentional.
In my patched game i've been pretty ruthless. If I see you sleeping, alone, you're liable to get knifed in the skull. Needless to say not many folks are sleeping in some of the less open buildings in the starting area now as their's a large pile of bodies stacked up next to the door. Anyways, I figured that I had gotten away with it one time after killing a sleeping Stalker in the front building next to the guard. I went off to deposit his loot in that blue chest near where Wolf was, when all of a sudden the strangest thing happened.
I had opened the box when a red blip appeared on my radar behind me, exiting out as fast as possible I spun around only to catch a few rounds in the upper chest. My health dropped considerably, seeing as this was early game and my armor was already a little damaged. I sprinted into a building while the other Stalkers leapt up and apparently chased the (experienced) Stalker into a cellar. They didn't fire on him, they just kept their guns pointed at the door. Meanwhile, the hostile Stalker was crouching at the bottom peeking out at them. Long story short, I lobbed a grenade down there and went into cover expecting the other Stalkers to go hostile at killing one of their own, but they didn't. The Stalker died and everyone else went back to what they were doing. The only reason I can think as to what caused this was that when I killed that sleeping Stalker he was somehow aligned with the guy who went hostile. Either that or opening the box triggered an awesome bug.
That reminds me - I was quite surprised when I came across Wolf in the middle of the abandoned army warehouses. Fair enough, I thought. He's moved on.
I was more surprised when I returned a day later, and found his dead body crammed in a burning barrel, a Freedom soldier happily warming his hands on the flames.
This game is great.

I don't know what people are talking about when they say the weight limit is too low.
The only reason I despise the weight limit is that if you've patched the game, your armor becomes pretty useless pretty quickly. With no real way to repair it, your only other option is to constantly carry a spare, or else live on bullet-riddled armor until you can find/buy a new set. And armor tends to be pretty heavy.
Then again, it is a good use for the money in game.

Hah. Yeah, after awhile Wolf (and Nimble!) move on to bigger things. Usually they just get slaughtered though, eventually. The cool thing is that after awhile another experienced level Stalker will move in from deep in the zone (We're talking Army Warehouses) and take over Wolfs job. You can even get a new set of missions from him which involve fighting Mercenaries.
Also, in my new game Lukash (The head of the Freedom faction.) is ranked number 19 in the top twenty Stalkers. That's going to make for an interesting assassination target.
So uh... has anyone noticed that you don't necessarily need the DVD to play? I had taken the dvd out to burn some stuff, and then I started up the game, forgetting to put that disc back in. It ran fine. I played it for an hours, saved my game, and exited. No problems. Was this a fluke, or do you actually not need the disc in to play?

the north american version doesnt have copy protection because they love us. I for one welcome our new copy protection-less overlords and will gouge out the eyes of anyone who abuses their trust and copies the game :x

I think you do... sometimes. I actually run the game using a ripped image of the disc so I could put the physical disc away where it's safer and it seems to work just fine, but at the same time, sometimes it doesn't recognize it. I've also played without the disc and I've also had it tell me to insert it.
STALKER's copy protection seems rather weird, but if you always have the original disc in there, it always seems to work okay.

I believe people are using modified files from their extracted game data files... I haven't done it myself, but apparently it's supposed to be text-editing-in-notepad easy (after you extract the files, anyway).
you have to get a tool to extract the datafiles and change a parameter for file precedence in one of the config files. then you can mod away. i know thats vague, but i dont have detailed instructions nearby, search SA forums.
I'd really love to see an npc pull a dead body in a barrel. I guess they couldn't animate it right so it only happens whn you aren't there.
I've seen a boar drag a dead dog around.
About the closest thing i've seen to that is when I took out the guards at the bridge checkpoint. I walked over to the farm and did the mission that Wolf gives you there only to come back and find a swarm of dogs dragging the corpses away. Alot of the lower tier mutants seem to gravitate towards corpses for food, it seems.
Edit: Looking back, I realized that I hadn't looted the corpses yet. Damn dogs.
