I'm mostly enjoying this season so far, which is a pretty fucking foreign feeling. Apart from
Dexter getting away with murder in an airport,
my biggest complaint so far is
what a huge waste of a character Louis was. He went from really intriguing to really stupid the very second they decided to reveal his motivation. Now he's dead. He might as well not have ever been in the show at all.
Part of me thinks that
Louis was supposed to have a bigger role but the writers are starting to get rid of plot lines that don't fall inline with their plans for the last two seasons.
Deb's awkward infatuation with Dexter, Louis, Quinn/Batista fighting, Detective Mike Anderson, etc.
I thin the writers want to wrap up the last 2 seasons nicely without having to waste time with these storylines.
That being said, I think Louis' blood will come into play later.

Whoa.
Only 2 seasons left??
Yeah
The writers have gone on record saying that this is the second to last season and they have everything more or less planned out for the rest of the show, and how they want it to end.
Personally I'm happy with that because now they have a clear vision of where they want to go and how to end there.

I was actually thinking the same thing, but that doesn't make the way they handled it any less disappointing to watch. Boy how I wish it did.

I've only had a chance to watch the first episode of the new season so far but... man... the way
Mike went out was SO dumb. And then they went and made it even worse by having Dexter catch the guy in an airport. I was really hoping they would try to reign in the wild coincidences and contrivances this season, but noooooooope

Popping into this dead thread (is anyone even still watching this show?) to say that "but can you ever really trust a poisoner?" is the best line of internal dialogue this show has ever had.

Yeah I'm watching it:
1. That line made me wince.
2. I dunno, the whole thing where she eventually does something he can't trust is so obvious. The whole time I've been going "Oh please don't do it..."
I'm not sure what the next/final season will entail. I'm guessing dexter trying to defend himself as they try to put him in prison for all the crimes?
It looks like that is previewed in the next and final episode of the season, but if Dexter is in jail next season, it won't leave much opportunity for show.
"Next week... Dexter plans to kill his cellmate in the shower"?
I really like to stick by shows. It's such a shame to have all that lore and history around a show go to waste because its traded hands with so many directors, writers and producers, or because at a certain level of fame they've decided to play it safe and write by committee, or because the creator didn't have any more than a season's worth of good ideas. I stuck it with Heroes for far too many seasons (can you believe I made it into the fourth?), I made it all the way through BSG and Lost and at the end of both I can say I was happy with how they ended. I've yet to get through the last season of Chuck but I want to get through that as well.
And so it is with Dexter. Lost started to pick up when the head writers committed to a definite number of episodes until Lost was completely done. Not surprisingly, the pace started to pick up, the pointless back stories either suddenly became relevant or the theme of the back story itself was played with, and characters suddenly became interesting again. Similarly, the writers of Dexter had committed to two more seasons before everything would wrap up. I was hoping they'd had an exciting end-game planned from the start, which they could put into action. Their very best writing, wittiest dialogue, deepest of introspection into the mind of a serial killer and those around him. It almost seemed like it too, you could have really used the first 70% of this season as season 3. However, the people writing Dexter these days are not the people who were writing it seven years ago. Off the top of my head, they're profoundly less intelligent, and they're a lot less creative as well.
Last episode spoilers
It pisses me off that I don't really have any high expectations over what's going to happen next week. Dexter's character has dumbed down with the writers to the point that four minutes after being told that "You're no longer under investigation" by a drunk fuck in a boat, and that for the past season he's been suspected by Laguerta of being exactly what he is he sees absolutely nothing suspicious about the fact that his mothers murderer is being put on parole just as he's been told to let his guard down.
Additionally I really hate Yvonne Strahovski's ultra-clipped American accent. It really sounds forced compared to the natural ebb of her Aussie accent outside the set.

That's what that is. Fuck.
I always thought her voice was a bit off, in both this and Chuck. I just shrugged and chalked it up to a weird lisp or something, but I didn't know she was Australian. Now I have to go find a clip of her speaking naturally.

In Chuck they were pretty comfortable with her character adopting an Australian accent or speaking Polish for spy reasons on several occasions.

I'm stealing this from the latest TV Club review:
On a plot level, this finale frustrated me for all the reasons Dexter has always been frustrating. Everyone acts incredibly stupidly in exactly the ways that allow the show to continue apace, while the writers still request the latitude to suggest the characters aren’t incredibly stupid when that’s more convenient.
But whatever, what's done is done, and there's only one season left. I have to see this fucking show out to the end.
I thought the finale was pretty good, at least the first like 2/3 of it. The end
seemed forced and was disappointing re: Hannah getting away.
The season started off pretty well but it sucks that they washed away the Koshka conflict so easily just to make room for more "you're the only one that understands me". He should've killed her before she killed the middle of this seaon.

Yeah, I miss the villains you actually were impressed by.
Which I guess was mostly Trinity & the Ice Truck Killer / Brian.
The seasons which have mediocre/half villains that get replaced or die early are just obnoxious.
Who was the actual villain in this season? The Koshka brotherhood became nothing.
Also there was ZERO followup after Quinn killed the guy in the club, which seems unlikely.
I agree with @Larlar although it pains me to say so, because I really DID enjoy the show earlier on.
Now it just seems he's broken not just his code for who to kill but basic freaking procedures.
Grabbing people in broad daylight (It happened what, 4 times? 5? ) this season is just so outside of what he has done his entire life, it seems absurd.

Immediately after he gets arrested for being The Bay Harbor Butcher, no less. I laughed out loud when that happened.

You'll get no argument on that from me. It'll be hard to top, but maybe next season Dexter will successfully murder someone underneath a roulette table at a casino.

In the end, Dexter is caught because he leaves a trail of pudding to his last crime.

There was so much potential for Isaak to be the greatest villain this show's ever seen, and all of it completely wasted. For what little he was able to contribute, he was fantastic.
I get the impression that they basically went "Hey, we're ending the show in two years, let's throw all our ideas in while we have time!"
Sirko easily could have handled a season himself, but instead they kill him off 70% or so into the season and all related plots basically dead-end.
I also could totally see the "Phantom" (burning guy) having been originally pitched as a season-long villain whose identity was a mystery (like how the Ice Truck Killer started).
I wouldn't be surprised if Creepy Intern had been intended for a bigger role either (probably not as a Big Bad, though).
I just hope they used this season as the melting pot of ideas because they want to keep the final season concise and on-message.
I did really enjoy a lot of it up until the end though. I'm not very good at ranking seasons and such, but overall I guess I'd place it somewhere in the middle.
The worst thing is that the Sexy Poisoner plotline they cut him in favor of was just... garbage. If they really wanted more time to explore that, maybe cut out the pointless fucking Quinn subplot that went nowhere.

Yeah, I forgot that, but Creepy Intern(tm) was actually something I could see going somewhere.
Then... "nope, blam" and nobody ever finds out.
Also, Angel from previous seasons wouldn't have just quit for a restaurant after he sees LaGuerta railroading Dexter.
Obviously she was doing it because she was correct, but he didn't seem the type to go "Welp, I'm leaving though... these enchiladas won't make themselves".
