CPU removal help / Edit - CPU manual fan control

I ordered a new heatsink/fan a couple days ago and it arrived last night. I've only just now had time to try and install it, but there's a sort of issue here. When I removed the old heatsink and fan, the CPU came out with it (it isn't damaged). I guess the CPU is stuck to the heatsink with that thermal paste stuff.

Anyone know anything I can do to safely remove the CPU from the heatsink?

Edit - It actually came off rather easily after I walked away from making that post. I'm gonna edit the thread title to reflect a new issue though.

I have this CPU cooling system. It came with a plate I put in the back of the compy to manually control the fan speed. The fan plugs into this plate, the plate plugs into the power supply and the motherboard. Unfortunately (and I'm glad I decided to look for it) the fan wasn't operating with this thing plugged in. When I plugged the fan directly into the motherboard, it worked.

Should I just not bother with the manual control? I was going to leave it on high anyhow.

By the way I'm on my compy now, not the crapass backup one in the house.

Use a blowdryer to soften the thermal grease and then just take the CPU off. If that doesn't work, put it back in, turn the computer on, and run something at 100% CPU for a while then try it.
