Deleting an icon from Vista desktop

I recently uninstalled a program with Vista, and apparently it didn't get a shortcut icon from my desktop.
Every attempt to get rid of said icon results in an error, stating that Windows cannot find the file, and that I should please attempt to find the correct pathname and try again, or something like that.
I have searched on google, and gone through just about every help menu, and I cannot get rid of this damn icon.
Is there a free program I can quickly install to destroy this nuisance? Some trick I am missing on Vista? Sorcery?
Hmm. One thing I would try, and I have no idea if this would work, is creating an empty text file and saving it in the location the shortcut is leading to. Then rename the text file to that file name. Maybe it'll be content with that and you can delete the icon.
