So I've been using my 360 as a media center for as long as I've had the console. I am aware of the codec and format limitations and have been converting my media files to AVI/WMV before transferring them to my external HD from which I access my media.
I've come across a group of files that are in AVI format, yet will not play through my setup. These are multiple collections, all from the same television show, which act as if they are not supported when I try to access them. I have attempted to convert the file to WMV, and even attempted to convert the AVI to AVI, all with no luck. I have burned the raw files to a DVD in hopes that they would play off that medium. Nope.
The only way I have gotten them to work is to burn them in DVD format. As I can only get five or so files on one disk, this has been an annoying and wasteful process.
Anyone had the same problem? Solutions? Or am I just out of luck?
Thanks!
tl;dr
Certain AVI files that should be supported won't play on my 360 and I want them to.
I've had that same problem with old avi files of some shows I have. I'm not sure what the deal is but I think it has something to do with being made into avi files like 5-6 years ago as whatever was used to make them must somehow have some conflict with the codecs. I haven't been able to solve the problem either though. The best thing I can think of is trying to run TVersity. But I haven't tried that yet myself as my network is fucked right now.
These files are fairly new, as the media in question didn't exist more than a year ago. Can anyone suggest a good (free) media converter to try that route again?

And TVersity? pray tell!
Basically it makes it so that anything that plays on your computer, can be played through your X-box. Even those unwieldly matroska files.
The problem is that AVI isn't a format, but a container - you can put all sorts of video files inside an AVI container, and if the 360 doesn't have the proper codec, it's not going to be able to play.

Is there a fix? Can I re-convert these files?
