Background: In my Expository Writing class today, we used Aerosmith's song "Dead Flowers" in an attempt to exemplify class differences and privilege. This confused me very badly, as I had always been under the impression that the song was fairly well entirely about drug use. Here are the lyrics, with my interpretation in
italics.
Well when you're sitting there in your silk upholstered chair
Talkin' to some rich folk that you know
Well I hope you won't see me in my ragged company
I never thought I'd ever be alone
(The "you" he is referring to is much of the world. He doesn't want the world to see him in such a terrible state after using drugs)
Take me down little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the queen of the underground
And you can send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flowers by the mail
Send me dead flowers to my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
(Dead flowers=drugs, I don't really understand the importance of much of the chorus. It would be great if someone could elaborate)
Well when you're sitting back in your rose pink Cadillac
Making bets on Kentucky Derby Day
Ah, I'll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon
And another whore to take my pain away
(Another whore=a different drug. If Susie is heroin, then another whore could be Meth for example)
Take me down little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the queen of the underground
And you can send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flowers by the mail
Send me dead flowers to my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
Take me down little Susie, take me down
I know you think you're the queen of the underground
And you can send me dead flowers every morning
Send me dead flowers by the U.S. Mail
Say it with dead flowers in my wedding
And I won't forget to put roses on your grave
No, I won't forget to put roses on your grave
Please give your input on the true meaning of this song, as I would like to be a bit more clear on this for class on Friday.
