Let's Play F.E.A.R. - Set 21 & 22 - The end

Hello and welcome to this Let’s Play of F.E.A.R.

feareditmj9.jpg

Having done two different types of psychological horror games this seemed the perfect follow up.
This is going to be different from my previous LP’s due to me never having played this bastard.

I’ve heard the game is damn scary so it should be funny for the people who have played it to watch me walk into the screamers and other horrors.
This being a ‘fresh’ run and all, I am keeping the raw run as the final footage for a change.
So unless it really is dreadful what I put up is my first run through (kind of pointless otherwise, not so scary if I know what’s coming :)), so I will really, REALLY need all of your help.

Enough of this, It’s wiki time!

F.E.A.R. First Encounter Assault Recon is a survival horror first-person shooter developed by Monolith Productions

A prominent gameplay element is "reflex time," which slows down the game world while allowing the player to aim and react at normal speeds. This effect is used to simulate the character's superhuman reflexes.

A core element of F.E.A.R. is its horror theme, which is heavily inspired by Japanese horror. The design team attempted to keep "[the] psychology of the encounter" in the player's mind at all times, in order to "get under [the player's] skin", as opposed to the "in your face 'monsters jumping out of closets' approach"

Right then…hope you all get scared along with me D:. Videos will be in the spoiler to save space. Also please give advice if you can, I really do want it!

F.E.A.R. is the best game. Make sure to use the shotgun, grenades, and the proximity mine things excessively.

Also where possible, make sure to throw grenades, hit slow-mo and shoot them mid-air as they fly near your intended target.

I use a 'nade in the next video...It was AWESOME. I mean, I didn't even hit anything and I thought it was great.
The combat in this game is amazing! I was having a whale of a time.

Also, make sure you include a heavy dosage of slow motion jump kicks. Those are always awesome.

edit: This game definitely wasn't so absurdly dark when I played it. You might need to adjust your settings a little bit.

awesome, most enjoyable. FEAR has some of the best AI opponents I find, also the combat is meaty. I find with the combat, cover is your friend, and moving quickly, but then using your slow mo up close to take people out before they can react works well. Kudos on letting us see your initial reactions to the game as well

Nooo, you totally missed the grenade pickup in part 1 of that section! Where you said about picking them up, I'm sure it's sat there on the table.

I'm only saying this because whenever I watch someone else play games, I always have to point out things they missed. Entertaining watch though so far, I'm laughing every time something spooks you because it scared the dickens out of me when I first played.

    Woo! " Hello and welcome..."

There should be little stims or something which permanently increase your HP, and another one that increases your slo-mo power hidden all around the missions.

Also, my volume or something is acting screwy, so I have to turn it up. Ow.

Can't wait to see how you react to the explosion.

On combat tips.. they're smart. Like, properly smart and something that people still talk about in regards to challenging AI to go up against. They see your torch, they cover, they flank, they throw grenades (as you've seen) and will generally make themselves a nuisance.

I'm also glad to see you're enjoying the combat, which I'm still convinced is some of the best FPS action ever made. Everything is just so dangerous and kinetic and tactile and good.

The Penetrator is an awesome weapon. :winky:

Also, shotty is a very good weapon. Though, I stopped playing it after a point because I'm a coward. The multiplayer is pretty fun though.

Fire extinguisher blow up good. Think the first time I played I nearly killed myself by doing that.

Yeah, I typically end up using the Penetrator, Shotty and a random assault rifle (though I prefer the ASP).

Man, I'm now tempted to do an Extreme Difficulty LP for this : /

Though in the beginning of the game, dual pistols is basically unstoppable for quick kills

Just curious, has any PC users (likely with Vista) had any lag issues with this game? I recently bought the Platinum Collection and loaded it up. It plays fine, running with solid frames for a while. After a couple of minutes, though, the game bogs down to near single digit FPS. Has this happened to anyone else, and has anyone found a remedy for it? I've looked all over online, and haven't found a solution that's worked as of yet.

Is your hard drive thrashing when it slows down/do you not have much RAM? Might be that your RAM is getting all used up. Though I wouldn't really know, not owning the game.

I haven't noticed anything out of my harddrive, although I'll listen for it next time. As for RAM, I'm running with 2Gb of RAM, so I don't think that's the issue. I just assumed it was a Vista issue, since I've had so many previous issues with Vista and gaming.

I played through this game for my first time over the past month or so. It was pretty great, but hard to get scared once I really came to grips with the fact that I was a total megabadass wielding The Shotgun Of Horrific Ultraviolence (beware all ye Replicants).

And yeah, I was on the Xbox version -- but I found that the default game sound settings are almost wholly retarded. I had to move voice up to maximum while putting sound and music almost off on the sliders to be able to understand the answering machine messages.

It'll be no help at all, but my brother was having some issues with his newly built PC, Vista and with 4GB of RAM, that we first noticed when running the Crysis demo but was also appearing in other games and in Vista itself. In Crysis at least, it would start off fine, then gradually start freezing up and the hard-drive light would stay on for the duration of this. We didn't manage to pin down the problem, and now the drive has apparently died, awaiting a replacement.
    Fun times.

Oh. Nice. I just played through this again using only the shotgun. :)

There's a mod for this on fear.filefront.com that makes your bullettime both infinite, you can move at normal speed during it, and slows it down by a shit ton.

I could actually throw a grenade at a guys face, slow it down, blow up the grenade right next to him, then run through the currently exploding grenade, and empty my entire clip into his body at right angles to where the explosion sent him.

I let it all go and he didn't even hit the wall behind him, he just went straight sideways from all the bullets and got his leg stuck in the wall.

I didn't really like the expansions though, the characters all felt off and the setpieces were too big for what I wanted out of fear. I liked the constant small groups.

Well that mod just sounds beautiful.. I might have to search it out and reinstall this stat.

Also I'm really looking forward to Project Origin (why did they buy back the F.E.A.R. name though?) and having a PC that can run it. Monolith are the only ones who should be making Monolith games, damnit.

Something with your settings is making the game so damn dark.

Yes, it's supposed to be a dark game, but it shouldn't be literal pitch blackness where all the shadows are. You should be able to actually see the soldiers you were fighting outside without the flashlight on, for example.

Yeah I do have the settings low, but also uploading and compressing makes it even darker for whatever reason :(

Also I have the light out and sound up when I do these..I have to have the sound up really high for recording purposes anyway. This means that every little bang scares the living shit out of me.

I may have to add that the Shaggoth was where I could see it most of the time...not popping up in my screen going *ARGHERGLEBLARGLEBLEACH!!!!* D:
