Not sure if this would be the correct placement of this thread, but seen the question asked before in here.
Anyway, I'm in the states visiting my girlfriend and I want to buy the newest 360 with the Jasper motherboard while I'm here. I have been calling GameStop and EB Games all over the place in my area and even 360 tech support (not very helpful, are you Max?), and no one is able to tell me how to differentiate the newer ones.
The most I could get out of them was one guy telling me that he's fairly sure the Jasper is coming in with the regular batches these days, but unfortunately you can't tell the difference unless you open them up? This seems kind of silly to me, as you can't actually do that with the new ones without buying it.
Been surfing the net for some time and these boards too, and since I'm not too fond of gambling with my purchases I hoped maybe one of the employee lounge members here could help me answer this delicate question so I can get my groove on.
If I had to guess, find out how how many watts of electricity it uses. From what I understand, when Microsoft started using the smaller, more affordable version of the CPU, the 360 started to use less energy so I figure the newer 360s would use even less.
I wouldn't worry about getting a Jasper motherboard since the revisions that were made in 2007 (the falcon motherboard, improved security for the motherboard, etc.) seem to be enough to make the 360 much more hardware reliable from what I understand. The primary (perhaps the only) purpose of Microsoft using a smaller version of the GPU is to reduce production costs.
According to posts made on other forums as found through Google, Jasper was supposed to start production in August and ship shortly thereafter. However, in posts as recent as 9/14/2008, people have not been able to find them in the wild.
Also, wattage of the Falcon was 175w and can be found on the same label as the serial number and manuf. date, but you'd have to get the box open to see those unless the store employee lets you really fiddle with the thing.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. Next time I'm in my store I'll try to look at the labels on the 60gb Pros we've gotten more recently.
I've also been waiting to buy a 360 until the arrival of the Jasper motherboards. I'm hoping that any day now some website will verify that one has been seen and provide a way of identifying them by lot number/power supply wattage etc.
Hopefully, it won't be long. The site Xbox 360 Fanboy recently had this to say on the matter:
"Q: I've got a question for you cats... What is the word on this Jasper chip? Every bit of news we heard about it in the last year pointed toward an August release... Here we are nearly halfway through September and I cannot even find one mention of anyone getting their hands on this newer, cooler system. So while I know MS is hardly gonna pull out the trumpets and make a big deal out of it (plenty of Falcons still on the shelves and such) it would be nice to hear from someone who knows what they are talking about. Is it coming? Has it already arrived? Do we just raid our local retailers looking for boxes built in the last month? Was it all a big lie?!!? Dear God help me, my 360 is on it's last legs, I don't know how much longer I can take it!!
"A: You're not going to like this, but honestly don't have an answer for you. If Jasper had been released, chances are we would have heard about it by now. And if we hadn't heard about it, our source for such things, Xbox-Scene, definitely would have heard about it. Alas, it appears that the latest round of price-reduced 360 consoles is using the same ol' motherboards, so we'll likely have to wait a bit longer.
If you just have to have a Jasper unit, we suggest you wait for the holiday sales surge to begin, allow the retail channel to be restocked with new units. Once Microsoft starts shipping consoles that have the New Xbox Experience pre-installed (which should be happening in the next few months), we'd say it's a safe bet those consoles will have a Jasper board."
"Xbox 360's with the newly integrated Jasper chipset have been spotted in stores and on the Internet. The Jasper motherboard and improved graphics chip are Microsoft's latest attempts at solving the console's ongoing woes with the infamous red ring of Death. Both GPU and CPU chips are 65nm drawing less power, which will have the new build running quieter and cooler than previous 360 models.
According to a story on JOEyGADGET, if you're looking to pick up one of the new 360 builds you're going to have to keep your eye out for a manufacture date (MFR) as early as August 6, 2008, Lot 8031 and up, and Team CSON. Or if all of that just sounds like gibberish, you could hold off for a few months, after which we assume most of the 360s out there will be of the Jasper variety."
