Basically everyone making a fighter right now learned from capcom's mistakes.
edit: so blaz kof and mvc are all coming out within a week, I'm tempted to say "screw summer classes" and go on a fighter binge. I'd probably be more tempted if I wasn't so terrible at them.
I've never really had a chance to try lobbies online before. Could someone tell me why it's such a bid deal to haven them and what the benefits of having them are?
6 - 8 people watching a match while waiting for their turn. Talking shit and cheering or booing. Only way to play fighting games online really.
Now that I know the intended use of lobbies is to recreate the arcade experience I didn't really think it would be that big of a deal with people since, personally, I like to be able to load up and jump into a game right away. That's probably part of the reason I didn't go to the arcades that much: I don't enjoy waiting in line (not to mention arcades in North Dakota are some sort of sick joke anyway). So, I can see how Capcom might've taken the mentality of "WTF, people are impatient nowdays and don't like waiting. Forget lobbies!"
However, hearing how a bunch of people really enjoy them makes me think that it shouldn't be that big of a deal for them to add it into SFIV after the fact and has me kind of excited to pick up KoFXII to give it a try to see if I enjoy it. I guess HD Remix has it, and I could always try it out there, but now I have more of a reason to pick up KoFXII!
And Iori is supposed to be a fashion plate / rock star with an unfortunate violent streak that is beyond his control. That just oozes cool to KoF's target Asian audience. To the US? Not so much.

I think Iori is cool as fuck
As do I! But we're not the US mainstream and we know more about the character than just what's on some box art.

Heh, the photobucket account uses my old screen name, Orochi Red. '97 is what really got me into KOF.
Did anyone catch in the new video, under online options, there's an option for Clan? And then under that there were options for search, members, and some other ones.
I believe it allows you to add other players into a clan, and allows you to organise either intra-clan or clan-v-clan tournaments, based on what I've read online. Unfortunately I can't remember where from, so this could be wrong; I'll try and hunt a link.
With so many popular characters still not in, I find Mature to be a bit of a strange choice. I'm honestly happy about it, though, since she's in my top five of characters played I'm sure.
For now I'll probably have her and Kensou to start with, just gotta figure out my third......

I believe clan support will be exclusive to the PS3, although I'm not sure why. I guess because XBL has the party system? I don't know. I'm not up-to-date on my online console features.
I get the impression that SNK is bringing back older characters based partly on the order in which they were introduced. The roster thus far, with the exception of Ash, Shen, Duolon and Elizabeth (and K'?), is comprised entirely of characters from the original Orochi storyline (94-98). I think we may get more NESTS era characters once most of the early characters are introduced. I'd think Yuri, King, Blue Mary, Yamazaki, Billy, Rugal, and maybe even the Orochi team will have to show up before that happens.
Personally, I think that people saying, "My favorite character's not in the game? Then I probably won't get it" should really try out more characters. I'm pretty confident XII's roster will have a little something for everyone. And you may just find a new favorite character!
This is the combo from Arcadia. The exact commands are:
[CC mode in corner] df + C -> qcb + C (Burning Knuckle) -> qcb,db,f + P (Power Geyser) -> f + A -> CD -> qcb + D (Crack Shot) -> d_u + C (Rising Tackle)
It's safe to say that Terry is pretty OKAY! in this game.
At first I hear 65% damage from a combo and I'm like, "man that's dumb." But then I remember that ultras in SFIV can do like 50% and that's just landing one move, not even stringing a combo together and I feel a bit better. Though I do hope the timing required to do high damage combos is strict because those critical counter deals seem to fire off all the fucking time in the videos I watch.

I would hope at least that 65% combo is a mix of links and cancels which should make it hard enough scrubs won't be busting it out online. I'm expecting a lot of RISING TACKU and CRACKSHOOT spam online in this game.. that, and Iori's crouching roundhouse

CCs aren't that bad once you learn to watch your opponent's CC gauge. Once you see that they can initiate a CC, start choosing your attacks more carefully. With any luck, your opponent will be trying to initiate a CC by being overzealous with their close C/D attacks. But because these attacks are slower in this game than in the past, it's easy to punish wiffed C/Ds with projectiles, jumping attacks, or supers. ALSO, it's important to remember that a CC won't be initiated if one of the characters is in the air. So, if you're trying to avoid one, you could always rely more on jumping attacks.
I'm expecting the most popular team online to be Terry / Joe / Robert. All have projectiles and very fast moving-across-the-screen moves. I think they'll appeal to the most people. But the game thusfar feels really balanced, so I think that (once people get comfortable with the system) it'll be difficult to predict who they gravitate towards.
Didn't that really early tier list have Kyo and Joe outranking Terry? Either those two are going to be truly scary fighters in the right hands or it's just further proof that people should stop making tier lists after five minutes of gaming.

Popularity rarely overlaps with the tier lists too closely. Tier lists are based on high-level play, which is very different from how 90% of players experience the game. In SFIV, Ken and Akuma are very popular online, while Ryu and Sagat are top of the tier list. In SCIV, Cervantes and Kilik are very popular, but Sophitia and Cassandra are at the top of most tier lists (I think).
Pretty much the reverse in SC4, but the point is somewhat valid.
Terry has always been a moderately strong and quite popular character, with short, easy combos that do good damage. I don't see CCs being exactly what puts any character over the top, though, since you still need to set them up. Once people learn to stop poking you up close once your CC gauge is full they'll probably cool off.
Anyway, Mai and K' are looking less probable by the minute, considering some of the sources their art came from. I still have hope, since Mai alone will ship a few units.

If K' and Kula aren't in the game I may have to learn how to play as Kyo again...but his moves are so difficult to pull consistently on a controller. Really have to find an arcade stick that doesn't make me feel like I'm being ripped.
I miss making up custom team names that the smaller KoFXII roster isn't allowing for.
Team Converse: Terry, Yuri, Billy Kane.
Team Shirtless: Krauser, Joe, Goro
Team Runway Models: Mature, Vice, Mr. Big
Laughing Team: Iori, Kasumi, Joe ('96)

You just need to wait a little bit. After they can make enough sticks to start keeping up to demand, it should get a lot easier to find them for the actual retail price. The Fightstick SE is pretty damn good for the $80 or whatever it is supposed to sell for.
After taking a severe King of Fighters beatdown from him, we spoke with Shane Bettenhausen, Director of New Business Development, about some of the console exclusive features of the upcoming King of Fighters XII as it makes the transition out of Japanese arcades.
Game Informer: In the build of King of Fighters XII that we played, the d-pad was the only movement control option. Can players use the analog stick in the final game?
Shane Bettenhausen: Yes, you will be able to use the analog stick for movement in KOF XII, but given The King of Fighters’ venerated arcade heritage, you may find that the d-pad’s digital input feels “tighterâ€. This is a strictly 2D fighting game after all, so you really want the precise “up is up†and “right is right†reliability offered by a d-pad. Do you think hardcore players would want to even attempt quarter-circles and charge moves on a slippery analog stick? And to be honest, neither the PS3 nor Xbox 360 controller accurately duplicates the real arcade feel—you’ll have to spring for an arcade stick if you want to play like the big boys. Most everyone around our office here at Ignition Entertainment and over in Osaka at SNK PLAYMORE plays KOF like a man—with a joystick.
GI: How will online multiplayer work? What’s the clan system all about?
Bettenhausen: Online Versus gameplay in KOFXII attempts to mimic that awesome feeling of playing in a crowded arcade, where you’re engaged in a tense match with an opponent while a crowd of bystanders fervently cheers you on towards victory. Unlike some other recent fighters plagued by lonely, 2-person lobbies, KOFXII allows for eight players to be in the same lobby—only two players can fight at one time, but everyone else can watch the brutality and chat during the bout.
The PlayStation 3 version of The King of Fighters XII ships with a special bonus option that sweetens the online experience: clan play. In this mode, players can forge alliances with friends and square off in a kind of organized gang warfare—three clan players each choose their favorite character, strategize before the match via voice chat, and then square off against a rival team online. A separate Clan Leaderboard will let everyone know which squad reigns supreme at any given time.
GI: Will there be any matchmaking to pair up players of similar skill? Any online leaderboards?
Bettenhausen: The King of Fighters XII will utilize a matchmaking system to pair players up with others of a similar skill level, and this system’s calculations actually get rather deep. Every time you fight through a round, the game is judging your skills and awarding you a letter grade based on your mastery. It wouldn’t be fair to force a D-level newbie player to go up against an A-tier KOF veteran, right? And of course you’ll be able to watch your progress on international leaderboards.
The Xbox 360 version also utilizes the TrueSkill ranking system, which offers even more comprehensive matchmaking tools and leaderboards to guarantee fair and balanced match-ups.
GI: I understand there will be an option to turn anti-aliasing on or off depending on your visual preference. True?
Bettenhausen: We’ve discovered that while some love the pure pixel-art look of the arcade game, many others would prefer that the home version of The King of Fighters XII feature a softer, more refined style. So SNK PLAYMORE has implemented an optional “Soft Filter†that offers four levels of graphical effects intended to make the game look smoother on home televisions. From our experience, old-timers tend to prefer the unadulterated image while youngsters glom onto the snazzier filtered style.
GI: How will the record, replay, and upload video system work?
Bettenhausen: In The King of Fighters XII, it’s easy to record a fight, upload the video, and then share the replay with the entire community. Shooters, racing games, and sports titles have made great use of this type of feature in the past, and it’s even more satisfying to document and brag about a particularly brutal beatdown—especially when you’re embarrassing a boastful co-worker with Ash Crimson’s fruity French fighting maneuvers.
GI: Can you explain the overall fighting styles of the new console exclusive characters Elisabeth and Mature? What kind of players will be interested in using these characters?
Bettenhausen: Some fans have criticized the standard KOFXII roster for being a bit of a sausage fest, and they’re right—lovely ladies are definitely in short supply. Luckily, the game’s two console-exclusive characters will help to balance out the gender war. Elisabeth Blanctorche, a sultry Frenchwoman who fights with a riding crop, first appeared in the previous installment, The King of Fighters XI. Intended as a rival of sorts for Ash Crimson, she returns in KOFXII with a minimalist move set that focuses on agility (via dashing moves and teleportation) and powerful riding-crop combos. Mature’s comeback definitely feels more mysterious, what with her sexy new pantsuit and unexplained (and also sexy?) eye injury. She’s been all mixed up in Iori’s business ever since her debut in KOF ’96, and now her gameplay feels even closer to his—lots of dashing in and slashing strikes. She also possesses some powerful anti-air flip kicks and one of the game’s most punishing Super Special moves.
Played a lot of XII earlier tonight. Tried out a bunch of characters I'm not very good with, but still had a blast. I really enjoy the speed of the game, and how satisfying the combos are.
So does that interview confirm that Mature and Elizabeth are the only console-exclusive characters? If Mature fights like Iori now, I might have to learn how to use her.
Bettenhausen: In The King of Fighters XII, it’s easy to record a fight, upload the video, and then share the replay with the entire community. Shooters, racing games, and sports titles have made great use of this type of feature in the past
And of course no mention of fighting games on that list. Hmm...
Nice to see the Blazblue developers aren't the only ones who noticed what a horrible mess the SF4 online way.
Daimon looks fucking sick. Where you playing at Rex Dart? AI?

I've been wondering as far as 2D fighters go(haven't played KoF in years but going to get back into it now).
Is this going to be one of those 2D fighters where sometimes you can juggle someone after an attack and sometimes you can't, but is it going to be one where as long as the person looks like they're can be juggled you can juggle them.
Because I've noticed some tend to be inconsistent in that regard.
KOF is all about the juggles. It's really just SF that doesn't let you do it all the time. You may need a specific move, but almost every time you see the chance for hitting your opponent out of the air, you can.

Haven't played XI.
Anyone have any idea how this could work?
I keep hoping for this anyway. Hinako is kind of tougher....maybe along the same lines of reappearing as Vanessa (perhaps a bit less).

Hint, rhymes with Sven Nasters.
