What a terrible review. Reminds me of how my small-town paper used to have a single film critic who reviewed everything. Regardless of the fact that they admitted to intensely disliking certain genres.
I never got reviews for most 2-D fighters. 3-D fighters never get this shit. SF IV being an exception, since I guess it reminded everyone of SF II when it came out so they jizz all over it and give it the good score (which I think it deserves). But Blazblue gets a 7.8 from game informer where the negatives include (paraphrased), "wacky storylines only a person on drugs would like." So they claim no story is better than an attempt at making a fun or interesting storyline. Then this stupid review for KOF that is an afterthought in a magazine. Complaining about the graphics because they are good and too distracting, what the fuck?

I suppose I should clarify as to not make them appear as completely stupid as reviewers can be with fighting games. They complained of "longwindedness" in the story and said players would appreciate a return to simple fighting stories. Most of their complaints come from the difficulty of learning the game. UGH.
I could go on about the dumb Blazblue review but won't since it's the KOF XII board. Someone mentioned they have legitimate criticisms for KOF, I'd just like to know them and I'd like to read something of substance about the game. Haven't had a chance to touch the game and have only seen videos.
The game definitely deserves a better review than that shitty box he set aside in the mag for it, and preferably from someone who's more into the franchise than a guy with a casual passing knowledge about fighting games.
Review Guy: Fighting games? Yeah, I heard of them. That's like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, right? Hey, hey, what do you think those guys in those karate outfits are saying when they do that spinning uppercut thing? I always thought they said "Show mutants!" Heh, maaan... now I need to review a fighter? They don't even have guys who are rivals who look or even fight the same. What's with that guy's purple hair? Green fire guy who fights with a swagger when he walks? *yawn*. Random number generator, don't fail me now... 6.5!
I'm always blown away when you go back and look at reviews of something that has become a bonafide classic fighting game, and they seem to top out at 80%. Ridiculous. I've given up on fighting game reviews.
seriously...
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, 80%
Marvel vs Capcom 2, 76% (it got 90% for DC)
Guilty Gear AC Plus, 80%
Garou Mark of the Wolves, 85%
King of Fighters 98UM, 76%
Capcom vs. SNK 2, 82%
...and most of those are among the most highly respected fighting games of all time. :S

But wouldn't that be a factor in reviewing the genre how accessible the game actually is? I mean don't you need like 120 hours playtime in VF5 to get half good at it and learn all the basics?

Well, if you're playing 2d fighters it's really because you hate yourself. They're expected to have a long and painful learning process. You wouldn't go and give a car battery and nipple clamp set a bad review because they hurt when you use it now would you?

But a car battery + nipple clamp isn't advertised in toy stores and entertainment sections as a fun thing to do. I think if you go from an initial outsider standpoint and look at a fighting game, it is extremely daunting and the climb might not be worth it for some players.
But this is why multiple people should review games.
There has never been a good fighting game review before, and there'll never be one in the future. Nobody cares about them anyway, so there's no reason to get bent out of shape. The only thing a review is going to help with is how many extra modes you might get.

I love it! Do you think you could make the background colors a bit darker? It seems a bit too bright for the Ikari team.

I'll fix it for you when I wake up tomorrow. Now I wish I had done the individual background colors on individual layers.
If those MvC2 reviews are from the PS2/Xbox ports, those probably have more to do with the actual glitches and slow downs the ports have than the core fighting game.
Anyway, Giant Bomb's quick look for KoF XII to me looked superb. Hell, the background shenanigans were awesome in my book. That review really just smells of Gamepro BS where they try to surmise there "experience" in less than a paragraph.
Luckily the two best fighting games of all time break the shit out of that mold.
Super Smash Bros.:Brawl:93%
Super Smash Bros.:Melee:92%
Since Brawl is marked even higher than Melee's already inflated score, you really aren't making a point here.. Brawl sucks big time compared to Melee when you play it seriously, showing once again that mainstream reviewers have no idea what they are on about.
The smash bros games are fighting games for people who suck at fighting games.. seriously.. I can't even begin to describe how retarded those games are..
Melee really isn't too bad unless you're playing with the "Fox/Final Destination" people. My friends and I had a ton of fun playing the game for months and we got to be pretty good at the game. I've never seen high level play, and I imagine it boils down to Fox vs Fox on Final Destination, but to say that the whole game sucks because of it is a little extreme.
I have little experience with Brawl, but what I did play wasn't all that much fun.
The smash bros games are fighting games for people who suck at fighting games.. seriously.. I can't even begin to describe how retarded those games are..
It can get fairly technical on a high level of play. I'm not very good with smash (but would play it more if the netcode was terrrrrrrrrible) but you have to be blind not to recognize that it's a fairly in depth fighter. The core of every fighter, attacking, defense, rush down, zoning, spacing/footsies and feints are all well represented in the game. You always have the option of turning on fun with items.
It's the input system that is "simplified" but makes the game much more accessible to anyone that can pick up the controller.

Oh I'm sure it is.. I just like making blanket statements lol.. but in reality, there's never been a non traditional fighter I could ever get into (smash/powerstone are the best examples) just way too much chaos.. especially with more than 2 people.. then again, I'm a lost cause when it comes to fighters.. hate anything 3d/even 3d with a 2d playing field (I'm looking at you SF4, but you're plagued with problems anyway).. 2D ftw. always.
I love casual play Smash. It's a lot more fun then playing more traditional fighting games with my friends. Why? Because most of my friends don't play fighting games. Its frustrating for them to play against me and its frustrating to me to try and dumb down my play. It's even worse to see my friends not having fun. So we break out the Smash, turn items on High and start playing Smash Shots. Every time you're taken out by an explosion, take a shot.
I'm off track now though.
IF I worked for a mainstream gaming magazine, I would give Smash a higher score than any traditional fighter. This is their job: reviewing games for the average reader. You want the real skinny on a game? Play it yourself.

It would be very sad if that were true. How many niche genres would never get any attention due to lack of mainstream appeal? So many of the games I love (many of them well-reviewed, actually!) lack any kind of mass appeal.

Apart from Terry she's the only KoF character many people can name from the top of thier head.

Nostalgia and 3d graphics in a 2d game got them that score.
edit: I don't mean sf4 is bad i just think that if it wasn't for all the familiar characters/moves and had sprites they would have gave it a 7.5-8.0
Plus, I think that game is ugly as fuck.
