    Really, this is the only way it can come off as non-ridiculous.

    Have the question of "is he or isn't he really a god?" linger until the very end of the film. If it's just revealed that he's a viking god within the first few frames, then the entire thing is going to be ridiculous, because the concept behind the character itself already is.
