MM9 - Which version?

I read through the mega-thread, more info on the game itself than version differentiation. I've got all three consoles and I am torn between which version to get. The PS3 and Wii are on the plasma, and Xbox is on a 17" monitor. I always like an excuse to increase my gamerscore but I've heard the d-pad on the Xbox 360 controller is horrible. I play mostly FPS so I don't notice. Logic states to buy over PSN because of resolution, bigger screen and superior d-pad, but 8-bit? resolution not really important there. Maybe I'm thinking too much into it. I just don't want to be in a situation where i'm buying the game multiple times.

You can get a 'retro' controller for the 360 which reportedly has a much better d-pad for playing old platformers. I actually got one last week for Bionic Commando but still haven't tried it out so I can't report definitively on it yet.

According to IGN, the Wii version is more NES-like in appearance, with all the jaggies and blockiness of that era, while the other ones seem to have a screen filter or something that makes things a bit smoother.

You probably already know this but all versions have the same achievements, it's just that the 360 one actually gives you the points.

Though I was really tempted to wait for the XBLA version for the Achievement Points, I had to go with the Wii version because Nintendo's d-pad is by far my favourite. The Classic Controller works like a dream. The game is amazing, and I can't imagine it being any better on any other system.

I wonder if MM9 will be brought to the pc, specifically through steam. The code base seems fairly portable as is evidence by MM9 being on the PS3, Wii and 360. Perhaps they use some middleware.

But personally I tried the demo on my PS3 and it just didn't fit my taste for some reason.

Would make sense, what with Bionic Commando being on the PC too.

You know, I think MM9 didn't fit my taste because I was always more of a C=64, Sega Mastersystem and Amiga kid. That's not to say I didn't play on NES or SNES systems it's just that I owned and played on the others much more often I guess.

Jesus christ that stick looks horrible. How the hell are you supposed to use the D-pad?

The choice seems pretty simple to me, if you're running on or have access to an SDTV go with the Wii since a) the graphics will look authentically retro (and a little sharper than the PSN/360 versions which are both upscaled to 1080p) and b) the d-pad on the classic controller is a thing of beauty.

If you have everything hooked up to an HDTV (and dont feel like lugging an old CRT out of storage) then go with PSN since the 360's d-pad is a crime against humanity and unless your HDTV has some incredible scaler/deinterlacer in it the Wiiware version will be lagged and hard to play as it only outputs in 480i.

I got it on PSN since I only have access to an HDTV and can put up with the slightly 'softer' graphics.

How is the achievement system for the 360 version? There's about 30-million for the Wii version, and XBLA games are only allowed 12 achievements over 200 points.

    360 Achievement list:

    Jitterbug 20
Clear the game in 60 minutes or less.

    Invincible 30
    Clear the game without dying.

    Almost Invincible 20
    Clear the game without continuing.

    No Coffee Break 10
Clear the game without using any Energy or Mystery Tanks.

    Peacekeeper 20
Clear the game by defeating the fewest number of enemies possible.

    Conservationist 20
Clear the game by using the least amount of Weapon Energy possible.

    Gamer's Day 20
Clear the game 5 times in 1 day.

    Whomp Wily! 5
    Clear the game once.

    Destroyer 20
    Defeat your 1000th enemy.

    World Warrior 5
    Defeat every type of enemy.

    Trusty Sidearm 20
Defeat the 8 Bosses with the Mega Buster.

    Blue Bomber 10
Defeat a Boss without getting damaged.

Looks like they don't have ones like Mr. Perfect in there. Go with the Wii one, it will really fill up any need you have for achievements and it will still retain the look and feel of the old games.

Whoa, that's it? The Wii one has, like, don't ever get damaged, don't ever pick any items up, beat the game 5/10/30 times, an achievement for beating each boss under 10 seconds, playing most of the game helmetless, firing a lot of bullets/just a few bullets, etc.

I have my Wii hooked up to an LCD and haven't noticed any lag whatsoever.

OP, you're definitely overthinking it. I'd just go with whatever controller you prefer best, though yes, the 360 D-pad is generally considered pretty terrible it terms of precision taps and jumps. For me the nostalgia of playing on the NES-echoing Wiimote made it an easy decision.

It doesn't help with the Wii, of course, but the Xbox 360 and PS3 demos make it pretty easy for you to decide yourself if the choice comes down to between those two.

Seeing as PSN games apparently don't have a limit on Trophies the way that XBLA limits Gamerscore on Live Arcade games, hopefully they'll release a Trophy patch for the PS3 version.

I know they said they were going to patch them in for Bionic Commando: Rearmed.

Wow those look like some tough achievements... beating the game 5 times in one day seems like a bit much if you don't have much time per day to play it.

Really, most "endgame" achievements are such that a normal human with a job and a life couldn't realistically achieve it, though.

    From IGN:

"While we're on the subject of 360 though, we need to make a note that each of the versions of Mega Man 9 will look slightly different, since Wii's build looks to be a direct NES port of sorts, with the HD versions having a slightly smoother, but also higher contrast -- not as "NES-like" -- presentation. You're going to get the same experience on every version overall, but those that want to sit down and critique the truly minimal differences between the builds will find that the emulation between the three versions is going to differ ever so slightly. The Wii version has more of the 8-bit look overall to it, but that also means there are harder edges, and a more pronounced "blocky" look. Is that a good thing, or bad? In the end, it's going to be personal preference, but as die-hard fans who grew up with the Blue Bomber, we prefer the Wii emulation, as it's truest to form."

Needless to say, I went with the Wii version as I already own the Classic controller.

I bought the Wii version but downloaded the 360 trial and was actually really impressed. If you have an HDtv that might be the way to go. It doesn't necessarily look better (its cleaner but less 8 bit as described above) but with that tiny lag-free advantage I was able to do a few things I couldn't do on the Wii version, even taking into account the imperfect 360 dpad.
