6 hours the first time through? Yikes. Was expecting 10-12 hours from previous reports.
Welp, too late to complain. Already bought it and will be all over it when I'm done with RDR.
Dude, if you get through it in 6 hours then you're basically holding the left stick forward from start to finish with absolutely no attention to the story or setting.
I am an avid explorer so each chapter took at least 2 hours each. There are 6 chapters.
I was pretty happy with the time I got out of it so far, not counting the naturally longer Nightmare playthrough ( scouring for items ).
Well, I had full intentions of picking the regular version of this game yesterday. I instead changed my mind last minute and picked up Red Dead Redemption.
I still couldn't stop reading about Alan Wake and ended up with the Alan Wake Limited Collector's Edition on my break from work. It was so expensive, but it looks so good. I can't wait to play the first episode tonight.
For those on the fence about it, you can snag a brand new copy on ebay for $45 here. It's the Mystery Deal of the Day. Now you have no excuse!
Hnnnnngh but I really want that LE.
Dammit, normally I pass on those, but the stuff included with this game is real tempting.
Get the LE!
Its so awesome that you wont forgive yourself if you go with the regular one :P
But I can't really explain why it feels so awesome though. Its weird actually, but I think it has something to do with the finish. It feels really solid, and not like something that will start too look like crap when it has been on and off the shelf a couple of times. A regular tin-case or a huge transparent box with some stupid actionfigure, would have ruined the LE completely.
EDIT:
Thats when I heard the chainsaw
HAS to be made into an inside joke! I think its possible to end everything with that sentence, and automatically make people go:

Played a little bit this afternoon, but had to stop mid-way through Episode 1.
The atmosphere is great, but I think the faces are the scariest part of the game so far. At certain angles, Alice reminds me of the horrific Heavy Rain teaser trailer from a couple years back.
Heh, well here's a funny little tale. While I was out today, I decided to pop my head into Blockbuster and see if there was anything good. Alan Wake was in, and I figured I'd give it a rent. Got the game installing right now. As I opened the box to take a gander at the manual, I find behind it the DLC card, completely untouched. So I guess not only am I the first one to rent this copy, but BB did a lazy job of stocking it.
Kind of debating what to do with it. My naive morality says to not touch it... but on the other hand, their mistake is my gain.
The Wolfman on
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Episode 3 was, for me, about as long as Episodes 1 and 2 put together. Screw anyone who says this game is six hours from start to finish, I'm only halfway through.

Love the atmosphere of the game. Definately no regret here
Chapter 2
At the end when you return to the cabin and see not a swirling cloud of darkness but a literally Murder of Crows. Begin flailing and screaming "They're in my hair! THEY ARE IN MY HAIR!" Several flares and Flare Guns later. I had a lot of dead crows. Such a fun scene

I think Amazon is selling it for 50 with a 10 dollar gift card. It's sort of weird to discount it on the day of release, thereby sort of dicking over people who preordered, but okay.

Six hours? Perhaps not. More than 10 - no way. Game is very linear, and there is not a whole lot of ways you can get "lost". But then its a horror game, not an open world affair, so that is unsurprising. Still the game does not last that long.
I can also vouch for the LE. The fake book case is gorgeous and is "signed" by Alan Wake himself, and the Alan Wake files is a real, hard-back book. Really great stuff.
Anybody read the Alan Wake Files yet? Should I wait 'til I beat the game to read it?
[EDIT] Wait wait, I lied. Just threw the CD in to make sure, and it definitely does not have every song in the game on it. It's the score and a couple of songs that are in the game, only 10 tracks total.
What about the audio commentary? Is it an audio track that is played separately from the game (ala MGS4's podcast tracks) or is it broken up into interactive chunks throughout each area (ala Left 4 Dead)?

Apparently it's a video commentary. No idea how it works, I'm waiting till run two to check it out, but it looks like it runs through the game in some fashion.
There are achievements for getting them all on both Normal and Nightmare, since there are some pages which only appear on Nightmare.
AAAAAAAAH!
I can't see it being that bad unless they send more taken and give them butt load of extra shadows. Tap the flashlight to stun them to conserve flashlight batteries and only go full stream when getting swarmed. I try to never go full power on the flash light unless I need to burn something down fast. Granted in Normal they give you enough batteries to light the entire town 5 times over. So theres no need to be so frugal. I just can't help it I suppose. To much Silent Hill and Resident Evil teaching me to get the most effect with as little resources as possible
Hey, so I was watching this week's episode of Feedback, and they had the person who reviewed Alan Wake on. She mentioned here and in her review that due to the game's long development time, she felt that some bits in AW were an old hat due to "similar sequences" having been done in two games last year. She mentions that those games are
"Left 4 Dead and Brutal Legend" (I assume she means L4D2)
How easy is it to miss the manuscript pages on normal?
Also, what mode do you have to play on to get them all?
Episode 2 spoilers:
There were manuscript pages along the road, weren't there? I got in the car, pushed the pedal to the floor until I was back at my cabin, and I'm 3 pages short. Dang it all.
I'm enjoying it. Good atmosphere, and better action than I expected. Not particularly scary, although it perfectly conveys the horror of being stuck in the woods with a narrator who never shuts the fuck up.
Or trapped in a small town where the biggest cause for excitement is a deerfest with one janky float. Can't say I blame the locals for going all Heeeeere's Johnny with an axe, under the circumstances.

Is anyone else having issues with really pixelated (sp?) fog? That's the only way I can think to describe it. I've really liked what I've played so far, and the lighting is great, but a large part the scenery (at least in the first episode) is the mist/fog so it kind of kills the mood to see this odd pixelated fog every where. Are there any known issues with this?
Yeah, I noticed that too. It's probably a combination of the depth of field effect, and the fact that Wikipedia tells me this game renders to a backbuffer that's 960x540.

Any idea what those things could be?
Turns into a RTS in the second episode.
Really though, maybe one bit that now reminds me of L4D when (episode 5 spoiler, I think..)
You're not just shooting Taken on your own, but working with two others. But this kind of thing happens a couple of times through the game anyway.
