Well I decided to kill them since, well, I wanted their AK47 guns. 12 reload later, I'm still scratching my head on this.
Killing the military roadblock early is one of those things in gaming where if you scum/grind it a bit with reloads, you can come out well ahead in the long run. You certainly don't have to kill them (look for a way through the radiation to the east) but it's worth the effort if you're that type of gamer. I know I am.

Yeah I'll stick with it and hopefully will succeed. On my first playthourgh (which didn't really go that far) I didn't have that much problems with them. Not sure if it's the Complete 2009 mod that is making them harder. I did see once the AI playing it dumb, all paking up being the yellow crane, I threw a grenade and take out 2 of them, that the attempt where the game crashed and ruined my opportunity to finally get them for good.
Hoepfully after that, you can easily purchase ammo for those AK47 early on in the game...

I believe you can; whether or not you actually have the money to do so, however, is another story. Those AK's, let alone the pistols they drop, typically do not fetch a high price.
I can't wait to beat the game; I plan on playing again with LURK installed. The mod looks good, just didn't want to make the first playthrough too complicated. Along those lines: is LURK compatible with 2009's facelift at all?

The problem with default STALKER is you ought to use weapons that you can get ammo for on enemy corpses. Otherwise you have to buy and carry a truckload of ammunition. I don't know how the new megamods do it, but you should have enemies with AK ammo by the time you get to Garbage I think, unless the bandits' short AKs have a different cartridge.
Finally found a better shotgun last night at the army base. It's pump-action, and yeah, it's ridicuously over-powered. I mean, I don't know why you'd use anything other than a shotgun in closed quarters. The rifles are decent at range, yeah, but up close for anything other than a baddie using a gun... can't go wrong.
They also seem to be the easiest way for the baddies to kill you, too: if they get even remotely close to you, it often doesn't take more than one or two blasts to do you in. So be warned.
Question: these Duty guys... can I get their exosuits at some point?
I think that (depending on the mod) by the endgame the Barkeep will sell you an exosuit for 150,000 RU, but there are a couple laying on the ground in small rooms and corners in Pripyat. Basically, you'll be waiting a while. Their bullet and explosive protection is unreal, but you can't sprint with an exosuit on, which actually makes things quite a bit tougher for me. Two favorite armors are the black military protection suit and the PSD you get from General Voronin, leader of Duty, in exchange for bringing him a grenade launcher.

There is only one mod I always must have when I play STALKER and that is the Russian Audio Mod.
edit- Correction: two mods actually. The other is Real Weapon Names, but most every mega-mod comes with that one.

Sorry if this has already been asked but, I finished SoC (with the 2009 mod) and now installed Clear Sky. I read the OP (and http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2009/04/27/stalker-the-mods-return-to-clear-sky/comment-page-1/#comments ), but I'd still like your opinions as to what the best mods are for a first playthrough (is faction commander too much change, mod packs you like, etc). Just need a little help because as opposed to the 4-5 big overhauls/packs for SoC, the mod situation for clear sky seems less simple.
Also, I got the "smart mod manager", not sure if I need it. It asked me what version of clear sky I have, but I couldn't find it in the readme, just put in 1.5.10. How do I find what version I have (got it from steam last week).

I think on the LURK site they have some pictures which compare the visuals with LURK and 2009. In my opinion, LURK looks much better. I'd be curious to see what you think if I can find them ...

I think Faction Commander is a little too much for the 1st run through. The 1st run you should only really join CS at first and then the Stalker faction at the beginning (after you leave the Swamp) to get some extra supplies and not worry about all the Faction crap much, just run through the story to get it done. Then, on later playthroughs I would play the Faction mission lines like their own campaigns - the Military and Monolith factions are particularly interesting.
With regards to joining the Monolith faction (not really a spoiler, but I dunno):
It's actually quite hard. You start in Limansk, and they give you some good gear to start with, including an artifact that blocks all psychic damage, but your first mission has you clearing a house with a dozen Spetnaz guarding it and two bloodsuckers on the way to the house, and you've got like 3 bandages. After you get your feet under you, it's cool seeing Monolith squads all the way into the Garbage, tangling with Freedom and bandits.

I may be forgetting a visual feature of Complete, but I'm pretty sure LURK covers all the bases that it does. It uses high resolution textures and improved grass ported from Clear Sky, which are comparable to Complete's custom asset improvements. It uses a high quality shader that's even more intensive than Complete's, with HDR, parallax occlusion, and all that jazz. It has a distant land feature not present in Complete that adds a proper horizon and ratchets up the atmospher considerably. It has higher quality character models that are not present in Complete. Probably other stuff I'm forgetting, too.

Not only would I advise against Faction Commander on a first playthrough, I'd advise against investing much time in faction wars at all until you've been through it once. Stick with the loners. Joining Freedom or Duty can make certain parts of the story incredibly frustrating if you don't know to expect it. You know how you could piss of Duty in SoC and effectively cut yourself off from the Bar? You can't quite do stuff like that in CS, but you can hit some pretty major roadblocks. There always another way around, but it gets real goddamn inconvenient.
Clear Sky hasn't seen much mod support, though. The grenade fix in the megapost is kind of a must, but it's pretty playable on its own. The kind of stuff that I personally dislike (like no iron sights on pistols) is the kind of stuff that hasn't been or can't be modded.

What?
Yeah, pistols in Clear Sky do the zoom thing instead of the iron sights thing. It's pretty dumb, and especially annoying because there's no way to properly aim with a pistol if you're a good stalker and have crosshairs turned off.
So if Complete chugs on my PC, LURK is probably a no-go?
Probably. LURK has two options for shaders and you can try the lighter of the two in addition to some fiddling with graphical settings to see if you can get it running at an acceptable framerate, but with everything turned up, LURK hits my machine noticeably harder than Complete did. Like Daemonion, I think it looks much better, though.

So, I googled "places to stash excess gear in clear sky" and the only relevant link I could find on the first page of google was my own question earlier in this thread.
Monger do you know if I store stuff in svidoriches little box if it will get eaten? I put a can in there then came back and it was still there but I don't know if I'll trust a weapon to it. I made great use of the box in the bar in SoC, I need to find a permanent stash.

Here's how I'm pretty sure it works in Clear Sky:
-World stashes are unsafe in the same way they're unsafe in SoC, which I explained last page. Now, stash mechanics are wonky and I know they've changed a few times, but I don't remember when they changed. It's possible that CS works differently than SoC, but I don't think so.
-Blue chests are safe in the same way they're safe in SoC. Pretty certain about this.
-Green chests are the new ones. Those are supply chests for a camp. As long as there's a faction occupying that camp, the green chest will continually spawn ammo and supplies. These are safe to store stuff in, but they will not respawn any supplies until you've removed everything you put in them. Definitely sure about this. The only thing that I might not be correct on is when the supply chest starts respawning, since you might have to empty it completely to get it flagged for new supplies.
When you finish taking control of the swamps from the renegade faction you talk to the guide to go to Cordon. I walk out of a little tunnel and am immediately greeted with some giant ass machine gun mowing me down. There is a fence on each side making it a little death corridor. Am I missing something or is there no way through to the little town where you start in SoC?

That's section's really annoying. There's two ways to deal with it.
1. Sprint through, hugging as far to the left as you can, with one finger on your medkit hotkey. Nobody recommends this.
2. Turn around and zone right back into the swamps. In Clear Sky, there's at least two entrances to every area from where you are at any point in the game. In the swamps, there's a second path into Cordon in (IIRC) the far northeast of the map. It gets unlocked as soon as you zone into Cordon the first time. I believe that will put you just north of the train tracks, right next to the anomaly tunnel and what is now a big loner base. Well, used to be. If we're getting chronological up in this piece.
an opening in the waist-high impassable fence hidden next to the fallen tree. That's how I got past it.
I swear, I loved Clear Sky, but its full of inexplicable moments that just seem like GSC wanted to fuck the player around. Like
when you go down into the basement of the flea market in Garbage and lose all your fucking money.
Hint ->
There is a box above in the broken building you can stash your shit just before that moment, just chuck it in, *spend your money as well* and then pick it up after the event.
I need to change my perception of the game and understand that it hates me and wants nothing more than for me to die over and over.
I am curious what perception you have now? That ravenous mutant dogs are cute and cuddly? That anomalies are adorable light shows? That the military is there to protect you?
These Lab X18 stories remind me of my favorite STALKER post ever, which unfortunately I can't seem to locate. It was someone asking whether there were any underground areas, because he's really scared of those in games.

Advice for technique 2
I had an issue trying #2. There are teams of Stalkers guarding both of the passageways from the upper to lower Cordon (the bridge and the tunnel) and they wouldn't let me through down to Sid for some reason I can't recall. I didn't want to kill them since I wanted to join the Stalker faction. I wasn't able to find an alternate route from upper to lower Cordon, so I had to go back and try the machine gun, which was one of my 5 most frustrating moments in personal gaming history. This might happen to you to, so be mentally prepared to try against the machine gun. Bring a book, you'll be spending lots of time with the load screen. It's worth it in the end. Just keep telling yourself that, because it is actually true.

Oh, I did. TBH, I was consulting one walkthrough or another for the first half or so of CS. After getting dumped in front of an army base with every indication that I was supposed to fight my way through it, I didn't want any more nasty surprises.
So is there no way to sleep by default in Clear Sky as well, or is there something I'm missing?
Sleep didn't get added to Clear Sky. And hunger got removed.
I believe I've heard that sleep got added to Call of Pripyat, though. But only in bunks at trader camps.
The mind boggles. I guess I need to see if there's a sleeping bag mod for CS on filefront.
Edit: Looks like the only CS one there is a buggy port of a SoC one.
The mind boggles? What, you're too scared to go out at night? They've got little dots on your map that warn you when the beasties are going to jump out at you! Man the fuck up!

I even have the blue-tinted night-vision and I'm still kinda hesitant about going out at night. The only time I've gone out is because I wanted the cover of dark when going into the Freedom and Bandit bases.
I think it would be cool if you could also use bolts to distract guards. Would make stealth play that much better. For example, there was a single guard in the doorway of the Freedom armory, and stabbing him would have been so much easier if I could have drawn him out with a bolt.

I recently received and installed my Radeon 4870 HD, and so I gave S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a spin again now that I can play with details on high (max still rapes my machine).
Besides having Cordon raped three times by the army within the course of 15 mins (using L.U.R.K.), is it normal that I am unable to spot enemies in the terrain? I have been watching the LP of Ninja Snarl P, and I have noticed how he spots enemies way faster than I do (sometimes I even wonder what he is shooting at). I constantly have to bring up my binoculars to see where my enemy is (even in day light at no more than 50-100 ft).
Is this normal? I feel like I am as blind as a bat and it is somewhat hampering my enjoyment of the game.

OH that reminds me of an awesome moment I had in clear sky. It was in pitch black.
I had to go defend with a patrol and capture a point. I get to the point and walk out ahead for a little bit. I could see some eyes in the gloom so I figured I'll pull out my binoculars to see exactly how many there are.
so I pull em out and zoom in feeling all tactical getting ready to call out attack or pull them in or whatever.
The boxes start coming into focus.
The boxes are...moving?
The boxes are moving towards me OH FUCK
Dropped the binos as the mutants charged out of the murk at us.

Yeah you'll find being blind is a major detriment to your ability to play first person shooters.

Be nice.
But it's safe to assume that Ninja Snarl has already played through the game once, so he already knows what to look for in terms of what enemies look like, and how to pick out their silhouettes. For now, until you're able to pick out bandits under the cover of brush, I'd recommend to just watch for movement. Enemies may be able to blend in with the foliage, but it's pretty easy to pick out a moving object from a stationary.
Also, if you aren't playing LURK, you could possibly "cheat" by just moving your crosshair around until it turns red.

Monger do you know if I store stuff in svidoriches little box if it will get eaten? I put a can in there then came back and it was still there but I don't know if I'll trust a weapon to it. I made great use of the box in the bar in SoC, I need to find a permanent stash.

I swear, I loved Clear Sky, but its full of inexplicable moments that just seem like GSC wanted to fuck the player around. Like
I don't think I'll be able to make it through this...

Oh, but I love it.
I am curious what perception you have now? That ravenous mutant dogs are cute and cuddly? That anomalies are adorable light shows? That the military is there to protect you?
Yeah...
Advice for technique 2
Oh, I did. TBH, I was consulting one walkthrough or another for the first half or so of CS. After getting dumped in front of an army base with every indication that I was supposed to fight my way through it, I didn't want any more nasty surprises.

But this game. Oh this game.
I cannot man up.
I have those disabled~
Way to be a dick though.

I think it would be cool if you could also use bolts to distract guards. Would make stealth play that much better. For example, there was a single guard in the doorway of the Freedom armory, and stabbing him would have been so much easier if I could have drawn him out with a bolt.
