I like it a lot better, the simple fact that the vanialla game allows you to fix your equipment and mod it, makes it sooooo much better. I hated losing armor because it was wore out, biggest pain of SoC.

If you liked Shadows of Chernobyl and can deal with its stability.. quirkiness you will like Clear Sky. Just -
1. Make sure you upgrade to the most current patch 1.5.05
2. Save often using multiple save files
3. Realize that during the early morning hours (0700-0900 i think) performance is at its worst, consequently the games ingame intro starts during these hours.
4. Run from cover to cover the first time you get to cordon, or go back to the swamps and take the alternate route in. This will make sense when you get to it.

I love any game that lets you modify your own weapons. Don't know why.
It's Friday, the weekend looms and I've just finished all other games that I've been replaying. I haven't played SoC since pretty much when it came out and have the dvd on hand, also have Clear Sky dvd on hand.
Wondering whether I should go CS > SoC or vice versa. And when it comes to SoC, is OL worth it or should I just lightly mod SoC to make certain things more equivalent to CS...
Decisions decisions... (some input here might help)

I'd have to recommend Clear Sky I think. But if and when you go back to SoC just install Stolls' Mod Pack, it's in the OP. That'll have all the mods you'll need.
So as a complete newb to the series, would you say that the Zone Reclamation Project is the only real mod/patch to worry about right now? Going to be downloading it from Steam, and I just want to make sure I have the most stable, "complete" version of the game. I'm not really worried about adding to the experience right now so much as just getting a nicely playable version of the original game.

I'd say the mod compilation pack (in the OP) will probably give you the most "Vanilla" experience. Or possibly the ZRP, though that may change things away from Vanilla a bit more (which isn't always a bad thing). Definitely don't try OL till you play vanilla at least once, if not a couple of times.
No matter what, you'll probably run into a wrinkle or two running STALKER, even with mods. Just kind of the nature of the beast. But it's so worth it

Well, for Assault Rifles there are two major paths, sniping and machine-gunning.
The sniper path will make you rifle more accurate (i.e., the bullet will hit closer to the aiming point more often), with less bullet drop, and a bit less recoil. You will lose a bit of rate of fire. This is a very good path to take, your weapon will be headshoting foes from very far away, better than the sniper rifles (which have too much bullet drop).
The MG path will make your AR shoot a lot faster with a lot less recoil and will let you add a grenade launcher to the gun. This is less useful, because ramboing in CS is a quick way to die. The Gren Launcher is also less useful then killing dudes from very far, because it's very hard to aim.
Well, the latest patch seems to have helped my performance issues. I can finally run Full Dynamic Lighting (sometimes even Enhanced) like I did in SoC without turning the game into a slideshow. There are weird moments where the game seems to chug for almost no reason (not at morning or dusk, staring at a wall, etc), but quicksaving and loading seems to "reset" the framerate back to a smooth clip.
However, one huge problem remains: load times. They vary in severity: the worst can have me go downstairs, microwave some grub, watch a minute or two of TV, come back upstairs, and still see the "SYNCHRONIZING" screen. It's worth noting that it never crashes! It simply takes 2-6 minutes to load a given level. Obviously, this is something of a game-killer, especially when it comes to faction warfare. When I have to cross a zone line to capture a point, I usually just forget about it rather than suffer the wait. Even though in-game performance tends to be just fine, it seems that the lighting settings are causing this tremendous load time. They only become an acceptable length when I set the game to Static Lighting. Even Object Lighting hikes the load times tenfold, easily. As I've been saying, SoC ran Full Dynamic Lighting with great performance and reasonable load times.
While I'm griping, has anyone heard of any projects to fix the faction warfare? I finally got to see it in action by joining Duty, but all the other factions seem to refuse to capture their enemies' main bases. The stalkers never occupy the bandit hangar, the bandits never occupy the main stalker camp, and Freedom never seems to get off their butt to even make a serious push into Garbage. Also, this may be a matter of taste, but would it be possible for any potential modder to remove faction respawns from their main base once it has been captured? I had three Duty squads occupying Freedom headquarters, and a few dozen Freedom troops would still periodically spawn right next to them and take it back. I don't mind that factions can rebound from destruction, but having their reinforcements spawn right in the middle of an occupied base seems a little silly.
I read somewhere that the Bandits are the only ones to offer the final bulletproofing upgrade on the SEVA, can anyone confirm or deny? Because they kinda, sorta, hate my guts for joining the Loners.
I just got CS and am about to enter the Cordon- I have yet to encounter any bugs. The factional warfare seems very fast-paced and intense- do I really need to patch the game to play further? If so, will it really slow down the warfare system?
No, the warfare system can only really improve from it's current state. The swamps isn't that bad really, it's when you get to the garbage that you really see the problems. Cordon is also kinda crappy, but not so much.
Ok I have a question that perhaps someone knows the answer to...
How do I access system.ltx (or equiv) in Clear Sky without installing mods? I just want to edit the crosshair to match what I did in SoC (though the crosshair is already improved greatly over SoC).
So I picked this up yesterday off of Steam, and played for a few hours. What do the various modiciations my artifacts give me do? Like +impact, for example.
Also, I can trade at the starting trader and sell extra stuff. But where/when do I get to where I can buy ammo? I'm always seriously low.

Loot the shit out of whomever you kill, also make sure that if any of your allies go down you loot them too. If you do that you will be overflowing with ammo, just not necessarily of the type you want. The swamps are tough because most of the bandits there have nothing but shotguns. But you can find a good upgraded pistol next to Valeri (sp?) in a safe that can headshot dudes. You just have to make it there first.
The artifacts usually have a postive adv. and negative adv. This is the rpg part game, they will usually modify your stats to adjust how bad you bleed, how you deal with radiation, psy damage, fire damage, and etc. Just read the info about it and look at your suit stats when you equip it, should show you what's being affected.
I've been looting everyone so far, and for the most part I'm stealing guns with little or no ammo. I've also noticed that apparently noone ever carries cash on them.
Maybe I'm not doing it correct? It says "shift" to loot a body (my use key), so I click it and it picks them up and gives me locations for stuff like stashes. When I release shift, I drop the body, or I can continue to hold it down and drag them.
Apparently though, I'm not accessing the inventories of the bodies. Maybe this is it?

Well by default it's F to loot, Shift-F to move, but since your use key is also Shift it might just be moving. Might wanna move your use key. F is fine.
Edit: It should open up a screen showing your inventory on the right and the dead dude's inventory on the left, you can take whatever you need. Be careful you don't take to much, anything over 50 kg and you're overburdened, which means your energy when running and jumping is severely limited, and if you take to much you will be so heavy that you can't move.
So anyone have any info on how I can generate a system.ltx for CS? Is there some way to get CS to do it automatically? I'd like to tweak my crosshair & a few other minor details.

Also unrelated to the above url, maybe it's just me, maybe its the fact that my clearsky gamescript seemed to stop functioning about halfway through garbage seeming to prevent a ton of sidequests from not happening and possibly NPC's stopping from respawning but SHoC seems much more skilled at tension building and all out scaring the crap out of me compared to CS .
the first lab, x13, even though I was armed to the gills this segment took me a good 30 minutes just because it was so creepy.
And everytime I go through wild lands there are new npc's waiting to scare the crap out of me, including multiple large packs of dogs, bloodsuckers, and snorks all seeming to have unionized in the common goal of getting me to scamper up to the rooftops and take potshots at them like a little girl.
I'm encountering issues even with some of the simpler missions early in cordon. For example with wolf's missions, saving the first stalker poses a problem because out of 11 attempts to do the mission, 10 of the times the dogs were hanging out near a tent/camp 2 hillsides away. Killing the dogs there causes the 'escort' portion of the mission to begin & fail immediately, as for some reason the game registers him dead. But when I go look for a body he's not dead anywhere and just wandering around as if trying to return to wolf but confused as to how to get there. Attempting to save the second stalker results in him dying because the game seems intent upon having mutants attack the bandit group and him as well before I can get to him each time. I pretty much ran from wolf to him with only a 28kg load and 5 cans of 'stalker' juice (enough to make it the whole way as fast as I can run) and still cant' get to him in time.
In fact the further I go the more bugged missions seem to get, though earlier in the swamp camps were dying so quickly I barely had time to make it to one or two before the other fights were done. I wound up just sneak-attacking the enemies of clear sky in their own camps to get the balance of power to swing.
The atmosphere of the game is great but I'm wondering if I should have replayed SoC while these bugs are worked out. When I played SoC the first time I experienced a lot of similar issues and wound up just hurrying through the game, it seems that between the patches and the modding community that game is considerably better now.
Whilst smoking my pipe and sipping my brandy I happened to glance upon the PC Gamer review of Clear Sky before I tossed the vile magazine on the fire.
I don't think they played the game.
Furthermore, they made some comparative statements to Shadow of Chernobyl and I'm not sure they played that game either.
Here are some clips, you can read the full review on their website here.
Since you’re covering the same areas again, a large chunk of the game’s setting is recycled wholesale from Shadow of Chernobyl. The Marsh, Cordon, and Garbage area maps have been spruced up with more foliage and reworked buildings, but the layout and level design are taken directly from the old maps.
The Marsh was pretty clearly a new area for Clear Sky.
The only major new territory, Limansk, is a sprawling city that’s reminiscent of the urban environments in Half-Life 2. Other new locations, such as the Red Forrest and Pripyat Undergrounds, are similarly vast, but less detailed.
Red Forrest was in Shadow of Chernobyl.
Clear Sky’s biggest innovation is the artificial intelligence system that controls the NPCs and factions that inhabit the aforementioned districts... I thoroughly enjoyed the spontaneity of the skirmishes. Randomly happening upon two (or sometimes more) groups engaged in a firefight added life and believability to the world, and being able to turn the tide of each battle and earn some loot in the process was very rewarding.
I wasn’t impressed by friendly NPC behavior, either - it never felt like they were fighting alongside me as much as I was a lone third party interfering with their conflict.
So, the new NPCs and AI were the biggest and best new feature, but it was frustrating and you weren't impressed with it.
Moving along...
The game stability improvements
The inevitable shootouts (this is, after all, still a shooter) ranged from ridiculously easy encounters near the beginning of the game to frustratingly challenging assaults later on.

So after reading a bit of that review I think I found out what the reviewers problem is
At times it seemed impossible to win, thanks to the AI’s impeccable aim and night vision superior to what any human could ever hope for. Running out of bandages (which are more scarce than in the previous game) in the middle of such fights often proved fatal - a couple of times, I had to resort to quick-saving after every kill until I eventually prevailed.
It sounds to me like somebody is trying to play "Rambo goes to Russia part deux: who needs cover".
And I do know the game is actually set in Ukraine however it doesn't rhyme with rambo.
There were a few combat things that irked me in this game, mainly the grenade accuracy and the
warning end game spoiler
waves of monolith at the nuclear power plant. I think I died there more than the rest of the game combined. Waves would spawn and either a) I would see 3-4 grenade warnings and die a second later or b) they would come right out of the portal and have a bead on my forehead.
Maybe it's just the difficulty I'm playing on (Veteran, instead of just Stalker) but the early-game shoot outs are pretty fucking difficult. Defending places from bandits hasn't been so bad, because they usually come with shotguns and get gunned down by my AK before they can get close, but when I'm trying to attack Bandit controlled outposts it's been pretty frustrating. Most of it is related to grenades. Because the AI has superhuman accuracy with the grenade, and once they've called out that they are going to throw it it pretty much doesn't matter where you run, the grenade's going to land right next to you. And you have like, only a second to get away from the blast.
And my experience so far as been sneaking up to the bandits, opening fire, then hearing "choke on this you cocksucker" and having 6 grenades land next to me simultaneously. Pretty ridiculous.
I haven't had huge problems with the faction war system yet. To my pleasant surprise the Stalkers pushed into Garbage all on their own, although I did have to reclaim the entrances for them eventually. My only complaint is that none of the squad leaders will give me missions.
/edit: Wait, I can think of something else. Sometimes bandits will be going on a mission to somewhere else (i.e: garbage entrance) and then get sidetracked and end up attacking another camp they walked by. But this ended up in a pretty ridiculous and awesome defense of a Freedom base by me and the Freedom squad leader (all his pals got killed earlier as I ran over to help him). I think we've fought off at least 5 waves of bandits. Which reminds me of another minor complaint, sometimes I'll help my dudes claim some territory, but it doesn't give me credit for completing the mission. Like, I kill all the dudes, most of the squad I went with is still alive, but it says 'task canceled' even though the squad still occupies the turf. Not a big thing, but I want every ruble I can get right now.
Yeah. There are plenty of legitimate grievances with Clear Sky. I don't see why the reviewer felt compelled to invent some.
The AI's aim felt fine to me, though their grenade accuracy was quite frustrating. You really had to be at a full run at a 90 degree angle to avoid the blast. I've also never been a big fan of the bleeding mechanic. It's not the added difficulty that bothers me: it's that the game necessitates carrying around 50+ bandages at all times to get through most serious firefights.
I've resorted to just allowing myself to bleed through the fight and bandaging up later, but it is impossible to stay stocked with them. The fire fights have all been hard, mostly because of the gun's lack of accuracy when not upgraded, and the ridiculous accuracy of npc thrown grenades. By far my biggest complaint is the grenades.
Also when I had to find the lost Fang's PDA and got ambushed by Bandits and they stole 3 grand from me, that was a fucked move by the devs.
I finished the game today and man, what a fucking awful ending. The whole ending segment of the game was unbelievably terrible.
The bit at the NPP itself was particularly bad. "Here's a magic ray gun to shoot at this guy for... some reason." As I recall, Strelok needed the psy-shield thing to get by the Brain Scorcher, which is not the power plant, so why do I need to take it out? And why do I get some kind of laser rifle to do that?

Man what? We're ALL talking about it. What did you think CS stood for?
But seriously, you don't have to worry, it's...just as good as SoC, I'd say. Better in some areas, weaker than others.

MP5 modded for accuracy is the bizness. I must be weird, though, cos I prefer to lower the ROF on my guns. More control, methinks.
Also in regards to my SEVA query it's okay, there's a mod that allows the Loner mechanic in Agroprom to install the final mods.
That was goddamn intense. The only irritating part was the final bit where I had to navigate through the fire anomalies.
I found the controller to be even more frightening in this one.
