Hi guys,
So my computer won't POST. A brief timeline:
Two Weeks Ago: On startup, the computer sometimes doesn't send any signal to the monitor but random rebooting fixes the issue.
One Week Ago: That problem goes away. Instead, I invariably get a msg saying that my overclocking settings have failed and that it would restore them to the default. It goes to CMOS, the settings are always changed to default (where they were already - I don't overclock). This error pre-empts USB initialization, so I have to use a PS2 keyboard to prompt it to continue.
Today: Once I press a button on the keyboard, it doesn't go to CMOS, but instead hangs after detecting my RAM and USB devices. I tried resetting my CMOS battery and jumper - no luck.
I assume i'm SOL. Do people have any suggested fixes? I don't see how I can flash the bios given where it's freezing. If not, will I need anything more than a new mobo?
may want to go with a new powersupply as well as the motherboard, alot of the time a computer wont POST its one of the two, or both. probably the motherboard in this case though...

Here's the even weirder thing! If I reboot a bunch, my computer will occasionally start; some of my driver and configuration settings were borked but reinstalling drivers fix it. Noooo idea why. Then other times it hangs on post, sometimes it hangs on startup.
Any idea what would be causing this intermittent but persistent failure? Completely not working, I'd understand.
What does the post beep sound like before it died?
If it was ever one long beep that indicates slow mobo death.
Intermitent functioning also indicates this.
Probably, though I don't recall it ever being anything but normal. I'm sure this is slow mobo death...i'm just curious as to the hows and whys of a 'slow mobo death' - how can a mobo die slowly and not all at once? What's malfunctioning only some of the time?

OK, so the POST beep code is fine; 1 short beep. So could this be an HDD failure? Disconnecting my HD doesn't seem to fix anything. I need to figure out what I have to replace off of newegg, and won't be able to swap parts in and out...so up-front diagnostics are essential to effectuating a cost-conscious repair.

I don't know what kind of Mobo you have, but with mine a long beep meant that the RAM was fucked, and a short beep meant that the Mobo was fucked. So odds are its your mobo. You should see if you can secure a manual online and see what the single short beep means for yourself (since I could be wrong).

You'er right;for AMI and AWARD BIOS configurations, 1 beep = RAM problem. But I can't think that's actually the cause of the problem, because this morning my computer booted. I had taken out my CMOS battery, put it back in, and left it overnight - this is the same thing I did last time I got it to work, which was not just reset the battery, but reset the battery and then not turn the computer on for several hours. I wonder if my CMOS battery is dying...
