The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
A lot of tabletop games involve the use of miniatures or other play aids (hand-made dungeons, illustrations, paintings, etc), and this is the thread for them. Herein we talk shop about the full gauntlet of tabletop hobby activities: modelling, painting, sculpting, converting, and many more I am certain I have forgotten.
Works in progress are welcome and encouraged as much as finished products!
And just to kick this thread off with a bang, allow me to introduce a hundred orks.
Say hello, a hundred orks!
"WAAAAAAGH!"
With any luck, this pile of orks will be painted, based, and finished before the thread is through. :P None of them are glued together - they're all orks from Black Reach, and I left them in pieces to make painting easier.
Lucky me!

I can't help but notice that you robbed those poor Boyz of their slottatabs. Any particular reason?

Not a fan of slotta bases. In order to make those work, you need to put the mini on the base first, then base it, then paint. In past when I've tried that, it's led to two things:
1) I end up getting ballast stuck on the boots of whatever mini I'm trying to base, which annoys me, and
2) I can't reach parts of the mini because the base gets in the way. Usually this only has to do with the pants.
Painting them this way lets me easily get at the whole model. When I'm done, I glue and pin both feet to the bases.
Plus, this way it's easy to have them standing atop debris or what have you.
In the grim darkness of the future, there is only the blue dot.

Well, tomorrow I'll be able to post my Warmachine stuff, and some Warhammer Fantasy Dwarf stuff that I have painted recently.
As for WiP, I'm working on Squig Hoppers and am currently planning out how I'm going to paint Grimmlok. Let's just put it this way on Grimmlok, with the amount of flash left on him they could've made a fucking night goblin.

For the rank and file I prefer slotta bases. I have more issues with trooper Jones falling off his base than trooper Jones having dirty boots. On the otherhand, for Characters etc, you want to give them something special and slottabases just suck for that.
Seriously, not putting you down. That sounds like an awesome idea and you are awesome for having it.
I was planning on priming gray, spraying the silver, then going over the details, and ending off with my first attempt at a brown wash. I don't actually know what badab black is, probably a GW paint I don't have.
Hmm, I wish I'd been around earlier to help with the title. This one is not inspiring me to make work with the paint. Maybe something to do with squigs? (that reminds me Ein, stop messing around with all that silly law school stuff and draw more squigs! Where are your priorities?)
So, that magic thread has 164 pages. how come this one gets locked? Is that magic thread some type of dimensional anomaly? I saw some guys playing this at the store. They had some nice paint jobs. If the average joe can do it, perhaps there is still hope for me!
Are the bigger guys easier to paint? I would think so... I was thinking of getting like a scorpion and some big ork type guys first.
What other tools must I have besides brushes, glue and a knife of some sort?
Big guys can be easy or hard to paint. Honestly, if you're just interested in painting a couple, buy a pack of like 3 space marines, or 4 orkz. They're snap-fit, so you don't need glue, and its just $8.
You will need primer, as paint won't go on well at all if the miniatures aren't primed. Also, acrylic water-based paint, though I assume that's implied.
Not too hard, actually. Prime it white, use a black ink to get it dark in the creases. Base coat with bleached white, then wash it with Badab Black. For the darker detailed parts, like the claws and back, either use a darker red or lighter brown, and wash with Badab Black.
ARe you giving it a couple of coats? What's your base coat?
I'm only giving it one coat, and the gretchin green was the base coat.
Multiple coats. The paint range is quite varied, with some going on beautifully with one coat, others needing to be thinned, and some need 2 or 3 coats. Any light colours i tend to do 2 coats at the minimum, like the yellow on my reen's shoulderpads.
Try base coating one guy in black as a test, then doing two or three coats of gretchin green. not thick coats, just enough to cover the area. I know this is not really saving you time, but after 2 or 3 it's easy t speed it right up.

Why would I base-coat black when its primed black?
Also, I tend to do all my coats fairly light, just enough so that the black isn't seeable through the paint(except the deep creases, that is)
Is there a place that has tutorials for specific models, or would that be ridiculous?
There aren't really any places that have a collected resource, but google searches may give you some advice to a specific model. Also, the GW site itself has tutorials on how to paint some models.
Here's their little list of painting tips and stuff. You might not find exactly what you're looking for, but each tutorial contains pretty much the same concepts.
Yeah, I wasn't considering paint a tool. Although, it probably falls under that definition. Ok, great, thanks!
I shall attempt to procure these items within a couple of weeks.
One last question before I retire, does this look like hard or easy?
Don't forget that guy is metal, and thus may be tougher to stick together than a more basic dude. I'm not sure how many pieces the scorp is but sometimes large metal guys are the worst to assemble. On the other hand, if you think it looks awesome, just go for it. Worst case scenario is you get so frustrated you hurl it at a friend/family member, killing them instantly.
So, I found out this great, fast and easy way to paint faces. Just thought I should share it with you guys. Basically, just paint Dheneb Stone foundation paint, and follow up with a wash of Ogryn Flesh. Done!
I also used some badab black wash in the eye sockets to give my space marine scouts a bit of a battle-worn, hollowed eye expression.
It's not the greatest weather for pictures, and I still haven't set up a Light Box, so bear with the shit pictures.
ORKS!
My first mob of boyz. They're 90% done. Just final details and bases to do.
Partial mob of shoota boyz I've been working on this week. Almost done...
My 15 Stormboyz. I've been working on them off and on for the past little while. I need to figure out what I want to do with them... I'm not to happy yet.
My Big Mek and some of his boyz. I run a squad of 8, two upgraded to meks with Custom Guns, the Big mek with a KFF and Burna in a Looted Wagon with a Skorcha.
My Mek's ride. I needed to beef up a Trukk to look like it had armour 11 on the front and side so I could use it as a Looted Wagon.
Da' Boss and his Nobs. Armed with Big Choppas or Klaws. Waaagh Banner and Doc as well of course.
Da Weedy gitz. I've mixed in some squigs that count as Grotz. The big squig counts as a Runthearder. (Squigs are used by runtherders to help keep the grotz in line. I figure this one's been around long enough to do it himself :P )
Well, hot damn. Finally primed an orc with Krylon neutral grey, and i'll be damned if just some Vallejo goblin green isn't enough for tabletop quality orc skin. It's a bit runny and tens to slide away from raised points like the muscles and jawline, but that's solved with a second coat.
It can only look better with a highlight and a wash. :^:

I think my goal after I get all my guys painted up normally will be to de-base them all and make them all swamp bases.

I also played in a tournament this saturday with them. I was really sick saturday...
When I got my Nurgle tattoo, I had a cold for almost two months.
I am blessed.
(speaking of which, have you decided whether you're selling those crisis suits or not?)
Well, my pylon project is stalled until I get more two-part epoxy, but I'm getting too the point where it'll be worth putting up pictures.
