I don't think anything in DoW was made up for the game. Flash Gitz are very much a part of the ork army. I don't think they have a specific model for them though.

Yet. Isn't the word that they are working on them?
Masking: No, I haven't really had a chance to try it.
Airbrush: Absolutely! I find they're great for painting vehicles and, at least for Marines, can be great for quick basecoating. I managed to complete the termies and tactical marines from Black Reach in about 8 days' time primarily because I basecoated them all with the airbrush. From there, pick out your details and bits intended to be different colors, highlight, wash, and presto! They won't win any golden demons, but they certainly added to my marine list in a hurry.
I love my airbrushes. They make painting so much easier. I'm not sure what you mean by masking though. I use masking tape, when I need straight line, or want to keep something already painted from getting spray on it.
Yes, I was referring to using masking tape to make clean lines... I use it all the time for whatever, and I was wondering if it was do-able on these tiny guys...
Reasonably so. You need a compressor for them, which is a little pricey. I got a combined compressor/single action airbrush deal for about $120 a few years ago, and then a second, double-action airbrush for about $80. (single action sprays at a single width, so if you want a wider, or finer line, you need to move the brush farther or closer. Double action allows you to adjust the width without moving the brush).
That's a lot more compressor than you need. The little electric one I got for my airbrush can't fill a tire or power wash a wall, but it's quiet, portable, and the only thing I need to worry about is the on/off switch.
Anyone have any tips for highlighting? I've mainly just been doing hard highlights for edges on my marines armour, and letting washes do the rest of the work. Comes out not horrible, but not great.
I'm currently working on my first painted mini ever, from one of Reaper's how to paint kits (I'll probably get into a mini game at some point, likely Warmachine/Hordes but there's literally no one around that plays and I don't have the space to dedicate to assembly/painting right now).
I thought I was finished with this one but after taking the photos I noticed a couple of straps I've missed. Here it is, followed by a shot of the other mini in the kit, primed but unpainted.
I think it looks worse blown up like this . The wash I used for the clothes needed a little more water in it, and I don't like how the face turned out, but otherwise I'm fairly happy.
I also found that my hands shake a little which can make doing small details difficult .
also yeah digital cameras seem to make things look worse with their high resolution photos...
and I think everyone has a slight hand shake you just don't notice it till you do stuff like that
How about tossing in contrast with different metallic tones, then? Justify it by saying different metals are used in different areas for more protection or flexibility.

i was thinking of that. i had something like done, with the armor kind of blued looking, like you see on a lot of guns, and grayish contrasts, but then my computer crashed

The trick with highlighting is building it up. If you go from the base shade straight to the highlight shade it will work, but the sudden shift won't look as good as having some kind of intermediate color would.
Yeah, I've come up with two good ways to highlight, the method of slowly working up in consecutive shades of lighter color glazes, or just doing a hard highlight on the edge and then using a wash to tone it down. I prefer the latter for quickness, but if it's going to be the showpiece of your army, might want to spend the time building up the highlight with glazes.
Yeah, keep in mind that I mainly just want to get my guys painted up to a decent level for tabletop play. I like seeing my guys look good, but I cant stand looking at so many unpainted.
Raslin you might just want to block out all your base colors with very little detail. They will look goodfromt eh table but when closly inspected look like dog poop. Got a buddy of mine who has painted a full 2k dwarf army this way and a lizardman army. Once he got done with teh base coats / blocked out his colors of te whole army he went through and highlighted the units etc.

Well, thats mainly what I do. Basecoat, wash, maybe a couple easy highlights.

Yes, Flash Gitz have their own entry in the Ork codex. They are a Heavy Support choice. I'd say you can make them from Lootas.

or something pretty close. more blue than purple, but not ultramarine blue.
now, i am not so sure. i kind of like the unpainted armor, but on the other hand, it seems a little lacking in personality.
What site is that from?
it's the bolter and chainsword painter. totally awesome

Booze is what most of us use. I'm sure there is other solutions but this way is far more enjoyable.
Your mileage may vary.

The only thing I did highlights, washes, or detailing on was the skin. Otherwise, the clothes were all one solid color.

Edit: Can anyone recommend some good painting music? I'm starting to get tired of my regular playlist of music, its not the best background music.
