I think it might be the posture. You'd think that if a giant mech had that much smoke pouring out of every mech-orifice it wouldn't be standing. It kind of ruins the effect a bit.

I'm curious, does the fire/smoke effect on the on the left shoulder (our right) look like a face or a skull to anyone else, or am I just suffering the effects of 2 hours of sleep over the past 24?

Obviously it only just took a hit at this very moment, explosions blooming out of the cockpit, engine compartment, and powerplant.

And although I sort of see a skull in there too, I'm going to say you're suffering from the human tendency to find recognizable patterns in random objects, because I certainly didn't paint a skull face there.

So there was a tournament recently and I prepared for it for a whole week. I painted new models and made a glorious, winged Hive Tyrant atop a pile of snow-covered debris. He had a set of four wings. It was the greatest thing I had ever made. I thought I had the "Best Presentation" in the bag as well as the large single model category.

Then all these guys from a nearby city showed up. I'd like to think favoritism was on their side (I think the judges for Warp Stone were from there too) but I might only be consoling myself with that thought.

Thing was, they had these immaculately painted models with perfect, perfect lines on them. You could not find flaw. They ended up sweeping everything but I was pissed off because, sure they had perfect lines and everything and their models were taped off but they were BORING. LIke they looked like the exact same color scheme and poses as the GW books. Exactly the same almost. I didn't feel they had any "Wow" factor like mine did.

So I'm not sure what to do now. My plan is to up my game on a single model for Warp STone. I guess I just have to hope they don't show up at all future tournaments and then I'll have a chance again for Best Presentation (that's best army). (The closest competition I had before was still a notch or two below me in my mind). I don't want to have to paint an entirely new army.

I dunno I just came here to vent my defeat I guess. I wish I could show you pictures but I don't have a camera still.

Man I want to show you guys so bad.

I got this little 96 point Carnifex, I call him the "Quarterback" and a Hive Tyrant with nothing on him but Shadow of the Warp and two twin-linked spinefists. Dude cost 87 points!

Plus another carnifex that I just put all of the slimy options on, regardless of really any thought on strategy.

AND I used two of my "FUN ONLY" models in a tournament last week and got:

1 Victorious Slaughter vs. Imperial Guard (the poor bastards, only three dudes left at the end and like a tank.)

1 Victorious Slaughter vs. Necrons (I twin-linked devoured the Nightbringer to death LOL)

1 Massive Loss vs. Eldar (Dirty eldar, I prepared for chaos lash the whole week and lost to damn skimmers!)

1 Tie vs. Space Marines (Funnest game all day, dead even the entire time and his girlfriend watching and rolling the dice that was my undoing! FOUL DICE WENCH)

So I did all right there but losing the painting categories really REALLY pissed me off, thought I didn't show it.

No...sob. I recently went through a. Well lets just say all of the...I don't really have any friends right now. Like my good, good friends that I have known for almost two decades I still have but they live out of town. All of the people in the city I used to hang out with exclusively ditched me because a league of my ex-girlfriends exposed a lie I told (well basically it was just no ones business so I didn't figure I had to tell them--I don't lie ever other than this time). I would have assumed if they were really my friends then the rule "Bros before hos" would have been enacted. (Personally I would never, NEVER ditch a friend permanently over something that happened between them and their ex) but I guess they weren't really the people I thought they were. My roommate's out of town for weeks at a time.

It's basically just me and my cat and my models.

Not that you wanted to hear any of that.

It does? I've been finding it very relaxing to be honest.

Thank you for hearing my woe, good sir.

I did make a film, or we did rather but because of the falling out I can no longer do anything with it. You see I sold him the rights to my script we based it on for a dollar because...well because we totally trusted each other at the time and selling it to his production company at the time for a dollar was a little joke between us. Now it is not.

Doesn't matter though because I have plenty more ideas and I relish in the fact that he did very little of the work and without me he has no imagination to make anything else. He was just slowing me down anyway because he liked to spend as much of his time as possible with his girlfriend. I realized he just likes to talk about making films while he's at the pub but he doesn't really have the drive to make any films. He's used it very succesfully to get more than one girl that is out of his league. I only care about making films however and he's been holding me back for a long time while I wait for his various relationships to end or cool down. At first I thought I was alone but almost every musician we used and anyone else we worked with went with me because it turned out none of them really liked him that much and they thought it was really lame that he ended our friendship because of some girl that he's only known for a couple years.

But I should stop sullying this grand thread with that. Oh and I live in Edmonton.

No he's "looking for a distributor" which means he's talking about it endlessly while he drinks three or four nights a week and hangs out with his girlfriend 24-7.

It's sad because everyone in the movie wants multiple copies (we screened it downtown to a packed theater) for them and their friends and families but they will never get them. It's been a year since that night and he still hasn't made any copies, nor will he let me make any. He just talks about it but nothing ever happens. Now I guess no one will ever get to watch it again.

Our last project was basically Eagle Eye (or what I've gathered from the trailer) without the budget except we screened it a year ago and were working on it for two years on weekends. Damn hollywood stealing stuff outta my brain!

This actually relates to Warhammer 40k and this thread.

He got me into this game a long time ago. I really sucked and he beat me my first 40 games. (he's been playing for 10 years). Eventually I started to get better and every game we fought was either a tie or very close one way or the other. My painting and everything else started to surpass him and I suspect he was always jealous of this, especially when we went to a tournament and I ranked higher than him AND won Best Presentation.

He's a total dick to play against and he's a brutal Rules Lawyer. There were a couple of games where it started right off the bat, "That blade of grass gives my falcon a 4+ cover save, that HUGE BUILDING does not cover your carnifex more than half I'll only give you a 6+!" Eventually it wasn't fun anymore (I never have argued with anyone else while playing), and our matches became heated melees of wrath and bile. It was not fun.

But you'll paint it red anyway because seriously, it wouldn't be orky enough without it.

Gotta love a race who's technology runs off of faith.

In painting news, I've been painting some Squig Hoppers. I'm basecoating them Mechrite red, then washing Badab Black, then highlight by mixing Vallejo Game Color Bloody Red into the Mechrite Red with slightly more in each layer. However, I think I went a little too bright, and also noticed the Vallejo paints are pretty glossy when dried. So my questions to you, dear painters:

A.) Should I give them a glaze of Badab Black to tone down the brightness? Or should I use a red wash?

B.) If I gave them a coat of matte varnish, would that kill the glossiness of the paint? I like the idea of glossy areas for things like toungues, but the skin of a squig should not look like freshly buffed and waxed leather.
