So Steam is announcing the 5 most popular source mods on their service for download. I want to get some discussion going about what mods people have played and which ones they liked, maybe one or more of the mods are good enough to hold our interest as a group for a while. I played Zombie Panic a couple of months back and it seemed kind of rough but fun, don't know how different/more polished it is now. I'm downloading Age of Chivalry right now to see if it's any good.
Share your experiences, tell us which mods you think we should avoid. Maybe we can get some games going together.
I played Age of Chivalry with vent yesterday and it's really fun. The only problem is that the servers are quite laggy.

I've played Insurgency a fair bit. It's quite enjoyable with the right mindset. You don't play it with a Rambo mentality otherwise you get shot by a guy in cover instantly. When you get a server where everyone knows what they're doing it's really fun. Team work is required of course.
We had some fun with the beta AOC back in the day. The seemed to have made some good improvements. Insurgency is probably the most polished. It's pretty hard to figure out what the hell is going on though.
yeah, diprip was pretty boring when I tried it a few months back
it was strictly ffa and there were no apparent objectives, you just drove around and tried to blow each other up
I tried AoC out and it seems promising but the most notable problem was how choppy it was
also it seemed like the class selection was messed up
like, I'd select a knight and then select a flamberge and when I'd spawn I'd have some little dagger instead
or choose a hammer and it would give me an axe
I don't get that

Change your weapon maybe?
You know, pressing 1, 2, 3 and sometimes 4?
Also, if you can press 1 while already having the weapon equipped, you can use it as a ranged weapon.
I'm a DoD :S player, but I want something that's different to switch it up. I hesitated d/ling Insurgency cause I thought it was just another CS/COD4/Rainbow 6 clone.
I see the realism thing it's going for, but is it fun?

It's basically a hyper realistic Counter Strike. No crosshair so you have to use iron sites. You move slower, you can lean around corners, and it's hard as hell to see other players or tell the teams apart.
They do some really cool things with the HDR lighting on a couple of the maps though.
It's also a little crass to be playing a game based on a war that people are currenty fighting and dying in.

yeah, I went through a phase where even playing WWII shooters made me feel kinda guilty (I had just visited the beaches in Normandy and seen all the memorials). I got over it, but I know what you mean.
I'll give the game a shot just cause it's getting raved about so much.

cool, looking forward to trying it out once it finishes downloading
*sigh*
Get it get it GET IT you stupid idiots.
It's an objective+team based multiplayer shooter that's in a Shadowrun-like setting without magic.
SO MUCH KILLING AND I HAVEN'T EVEN EATEN BREAKFAST YET
If they use valve servers then yes it does.
It was pretty meh when I played it, might have gotten better in the last couple months, though.

But only if you play with the right people

a thrown weapon and a melee weapon
you used wrong
Yeah, that's just one weapon. There's also a hammer and a sword and shield. If you take the hammer knight, that is.
Also Pirates Versus Knights Versus Vikings was a pretty sweet mod
