Cheap or freeware CD / DVD burning software?

subediisubedii Registered User regular
As the title says. I lost my last copy of Nero along with my old PC, and I've been using FinalBurner for a while now. It's free and decent, but it doesn't have the option to scan the burned disc to make sure everything's on there properly and I haven't just burnt a coaster.

So does anyone have any suggestions? I don't mind paying a sane price (say around £30-£40 max) if the product is good and I don't need to keep up a subscription or something retarded like that.

I recommend the following programs to completely replace Nero:
    • Ashampoo Burning Studio 8 - Very nice interface, easy to use and completely free of bloat. It does just about anything you could wish from a burning program. The price is acceptable at 50 USD (you'll find discounts all over the web so you can get it cheaper).
    • CDBurnerXP - Freeware fully functional burning program. Less features than the above program but it's easy to use, free from bloat and by far my favourite for burning Audio CDs seeing as it supports ReplayGain.
    • ImgBurn - A great addition to the above programs as it can burn just about any CD image you can think of. You can also use it to create your own data CD/DVDs but it's not really what I would use it for (the GUI really isn't the best for this task). The fact that it's freeware and less than 2 MB in size means you really have no excuse not to install it.

Thanks. Guess it's a tie between CDBurner XP and ImgBurn. I'll have a look at both.

It should be noted that CDBurnerXP and ImgBurn serve slightly different purposes. ImgBurn is the best software for burning images, but if I remember correctly doesn't create a new CD from just random files.

    I personally run both.

is there such a thing as a truly lightweight cd burner that doesn't require installation? something that just utlizes the built in windows features? cause i can't figure out how to use the built in vista setup.

i use nero personally but sometimes i just want to copy some files quickly you know?

I use ImgBurn every day for burning CD from just a random bunch of normal files.

Ah, great, thanks. For the time being it looks like I'll be wanting CDBurnerXP then, but like you said, both would be useful.

Late to the party suggestion. If you are looking at open source, I've had much success with Infrarecorder. Also comes in a nice 'portable' version that requires no installation that can be had here.
