The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I'm new here, but I thought I'd put a couple things out there. This one was just something I did quickly for a friend's birthday...about 1-2 hours in Illustrator 10.
The second is a work in progress that I would appreciate some critique on.
I find the first one hilarious. Both are somewhat interesting, visually, although I don't have any specific criticisms as to how to make it any more compelling.
I don't know why I like the 1st one so much, but I do. Just very graphic and interesting to look at, I think. Only crit for that one would be to work on the horse's anatomy. Right now the legs, the way the tail flows, etc seem a little off.

It's a unicorn! UNICORN I SAY!!!
But yeah, I agree with ND on the whole. They are very nice pieces. I can't really think of any crits... The only thing is, is there blood on the impaled dude's axe because he's hit the unicorn or something else? I dunno, it just seems that if he hit the unicorn with an axe like that, it wouldn't be standing :P
Wow, thanks for the overwhelmingly positive reviews and critiques. After Flame Week, I really expected to be crucified.
As for the specifics:
NightDragon - Because it was such a one-shot piece, I didn't bother looking up any anatomy for the horse. To me, the front half is waaaay too large compared to the back half, and the back legs are a bit stumpy.
Staleghoti - Which one? I do all my stuff in Illustrator 10 now, so I'm sure I could scale something to something approaching that size for you.
Art Monkey - I just checked out his stuff, and it's pretty good. I used to get a lot of Jhonen Vasquez commentary way earlier in my "career."
Tynic - Yeah, I definitely went top to bottom, and you nailed me there. Once I got to the mountain, it was all downhill from there. (rimshot.)
Tweaked Bat - It was actually supposed to be one of those squeezy hammers that you see kids and clowns with - you know, big, bright, red and yellow, you get the picture. That was the best I could do with the flattened look of it. I guess he had to get at least a couple of hits on the unicorn before being impaled. It's only fair, right?
You know, looking back, the picture actually reminds me a lot of Lisa Frank. I too, am ashamed that I know that name.
Im likeing the murderous unicorn, but the multicolor part feels really gradienty. You could acheive the same effect by overlapping brushes and created your own graident, it would take a little bit of the cheese out.
Oh man, busted. Yeah, it's three gradients with different blending modes on each. I originally tried a few different things, including manually drawing in the colors, but it looked a great deal cheesier than the final option. Thank you for the critique, though.
Anything for the second one? That's the one I'm really concerned about. The first is mostly for laughs.
The lightsource on "you reap what you sow" looks a bit off to me. More exactly, potato-man's light comes not from the moon but seems to be emitted by the newspaper.
At all I like both a lot ^^ Your use of colour pleases my eyes and your choice of motifs is really interesting.
I would have considered this lighting on purpose, too, because I could imagine that it could turn out too dark for the whole picture. But let's see what happens ^^'

Ok, I just did a little tweak on the lighting on the little dude, and now I think he's all set. I just replaced the file, so look at the picture a couple posts up. Thanks for the critiques, folks.
And I'll see what I can do about a wallpaper-sized unicorn.
I really like the bearded gardener one but I think you could rework or do something else with the paint splotches in the background, they look a lot less worked than the rest,
It's been awhile since I've posted. I'm not sure if this is classified as "necro-posting" or not, but I didn't want to start a whole new thread for this stuff. Most is just trying some new techniques I've picked up from lurking in these parts.
Messing around with some of Alduar's tutorial stuff. Not nearly what the man himself makes.
If I said I was thinking of making a comic, I'd probably be crucified around here. In that case, I'm not thinking of it one bit, I swear.
Trying some new techniques, walked away from color for a little while.
This was for my father.
This was a sketch I'd thought I'd take to completion.
God.. I love seeing someone draw in a cartoony style that is seems fresh. Nice stuff mate, aside from the unicorn´s anatomy being a bit off (the legs and size, maybe you should stylise it more or draw it from reference?) your stuff is quite good.
Especially that crucxification comic, reminds me of Warren Ellis´ "Fell" comic.
I like these a lot...the second image you posted a while back, (which I can't help but think of as a potato person ) wasn't quite my thing, but I could so see it on the wall of many student bedrooms.
My favourite though is your last one...the man in the snow - the atmosphere and the mood in that just blow me away. Brilliance.
JCM - Thanks! I checked out that "Fell" comic, and there's definitely a resemblance, mostly in color scheme. And yeah, the unicorns anatomy is totally FUBAR. It was a spur of the moment thing for a friend...maybe I'll re-tackle that one in the future.
El - Indeed, I think of them as potato people too. They are fun to draw, that's for sure. And thank you about that last one - I really tried to push it to completion instead of just trailing off and losing interest.
Chop Logic - That is my actual name, and they do sound really similar. (spooky sounds) And thank you.
Hopefully I'll have some more stuff up in a few days. I'm doing a redesign of my El Sucko website - after that I can tackle some more projects.
For those of you who hate cliches, please ignore the following:
After seeing some of the high quality comic stuff on these forums, (especially Spex, Bog, Earthworm Adam, and so on, ad nauseum) and feeling exceptionally inspired, I've finally decided to start a comic idea that I've been rolling around in my head for some time. So, if you are inclined, feel free to comment, critique, throw things at me, etc.
So here's the first page. I'm "officially" beginning the whole thing on April 1st. I'm hoping with my super busy schedule to get out one page a week, but more realistically, I expect it'll be around a page every week and a half to two weeks.
Here's a quick question to pose to those dropping by (and this just hit me) :
Is the font too big? I'm using a 14 point because I want people on higher-res monitors to be able to read it, but it just looks a little funny to me. I dunno.
Haha, in "you reap what you sow" I first thought the moon had quit and become a scruffy hobo who tries to cultivate newspaper.
The snow one is great except that his face seems slightly strange. Like his nose ends directly at his mouth. I like the contrast between his defined form and the blur of the environment.
Is that a bison? Cause I've always wanted to ride one of those....
The comic is great. I love the style. It dramatically reminds me of some strange Japanese flash game site I used to tool around on called Eyezmaze. Crazy.
Earthworm Adam - Many thanks, good sir. Always good to get a compliment from an artist such as yourself.
Epi - I've had quite the gamut of responses on that one, which is always encouraging to me. I really enjoy seeing what people will interpret from a piece of art with no overt message or meaning. Sometimes people will come up with stuff a million times better than anything I could think of!
Yeah, his character design is a little funny, primarily because I never draw his mouth. His character is a mute, so, at least to me, no need for a mouth. But that does have the unintended effect of making his nose look even bigger.
And yes, that is sort of a bison. It's something I'm working on for my project. It's called a yaj, and is somewhat a cross between a bison and a bear.
And of course, many thanks.

Still, good work in general.
I really enjoy both those pieces. even the 2nd one looks complete to me even though you say the contrary.
Awesome stuff

or a reasonable facsimile
Dear satan I wish for this or maybe some of this....oh and I'm a medium or a large.
I too prefer the second one. The first is mostly well-executed, but it just feels like you stopped caring once you got to the mountains.

Crap! You're right. That's what I meant.
Onward!
(Honestly, i'm not so sure why I like it so much. I just do)
Edit: Ape is right, the lightsource on the man isn't right.
I also think the shadows on the guy should be darker (Only just a tad though)

- great animation focused website http://www.catsuka.com
Thanks Ape, I'm going to fix that.
Then it'll be done.

The unicorn one, it's magic

EDIT: Ok, here's the unicorn wallpaper.

Crazy. Also, I really really like the 'reap waht you sow' picture. Good stuff.

It's titled "In The Image Of Gods".
