To be fair, the overworld in ToS2 was just a way to get you into random battles, and not much else. I mean, there were hidden treasure chests but the map was pretty barren otherwise.

    Yep.
AR: Why did your team choose to use a point-and-click map for moving around the world, rather than keeping the traditional format and letting players explore the world on foot?

Teruaki Konishi-san, Producer: There are many reasons for this choice.

First of all, considering that Dawn of the New World is being released on the Wii, we wanted to take advantage of the Wii remote in a way that would not compromise, but enhance the unique gameplay that the Tales series is known for. The point and drag format was one of the ways in which we were able to achieve this.

At the same time, we were also limited by the production schedule. Overall, we felt that the new, more compact interface would allow the game to flow between story-telling and battles much smoother, creating a much better experience on for our players.

Cutting content to rush the game out has definitely put this game into "wait and see" territory for me. I might have to wait for the next "mothership" title (which is for the Wii) to get my Tales fix depending on how things turn out.

Tales of Symphonia 2 review from Famitsu

    8/8/8/7

    - Improvements over ToS such when it comes to tempo, production value, and strategy
    - tons of events
    - battles are more difficult
    - could have used more polish
    - You don’t need to play the Cube outing to enjoy this title, but you’ll get a much richer experience if you have played it

There are a lot of remixed tunes in the soundtrack for ToS2, but here are some battle themes:

It came out in June. We get it on Nov 11.
I'm sort of bracing myself for it to be bad and I don't even know why.
The team responsible for the original worked on Vesperia and I have no idea how the other releases by the ToS2 team were received by fans. The fact that the overworld was cut due to time constraints doesn't fill me with confidence, and I believe either Emil or Marta has to be in the first slot of the party so presumably you can't actually play as anyone other than those two.

You can play as anyone, but Emil and Marta must be in your party at all times.
Also, if you want to play as someone else, you have to switch to them during battle. You can't do it like in ToS where you play as the first guy on the list. Also, Emil is the only character that can appear on maps and stuff.

So apparently I've actually got a ways to go in Vesperia.

Any ideas on how to fight Schwann? He keeps kicking my ass and all I want to do is get the achievement of knocking him on his ass, and fighting without getting fucking murdered

Plus if I sit through this cutscene one more time i might kill myself

Use the Recover skill so you can quickly upright yourself when his mystic arte knocks you away, then use a skill like Azure Storm to hit him from a distance. You can always set it to Easy for that one fight too if you're having problems.

Yeah...Azure Storm(altered arte) really helped me since he always knocked me back with his mystic arte.

Also, keep in mind the more times he uses his mystic arte the longer he stays staggered from it.

So, I'm interested in a new 360 game.

I can only likely stomach one JRPG at a time, so it's either vesperia or twewy on the ds.

    This is a difficult decision

Hmm, tough call. Vesperia is a very large game with a cast of likeable characters (even Karol and Estelle start to grow on you as time goes on) and has a ton of sidequests, but TWEWY is one of the few DS games that uses both screens well despite the certain level of madness. And both have engrossing combat systems.

    Sakuraba's official site says:
Mr Sakuraba composed, arranged and remixed parts of the soundtrack. He also contributed the Western version's opening theme not included on the soundtrack.

Did Sakuraba also work on ToS2? Swear to god, one piece of music used in ToV (the one that plays when you first leave the first town) is the same music as the final boss in ToS2.

    This thread is DA approved.

I finally got a chance to grab a couple friends and play a bit of Vesperia with them. Pretty solid and Rita is a beast when controlled by a person with a brain. Really the only downside if if you're moving up the screen the directionals get fucked. That is kinda annoying but not gamebreaking.

    Anyway, crosspostin'.

Why are there so many cutscenes? I just ran past a gauntlet of 30-minute cutscenes (right in the end of "Part I") and god I just want to play and fight some bitches, not listen to them talk for half an hour about how cool Yuri is and how much of a comedic relief Karol is.

While true AZ it would have been nice to be able to skip a cut scene with start or something.

Of course it's fucking stupid that voice acted scenes require you to sit there and mash A at the proper time to be rewarded with more dialogue. I'd be so much more tolerant of the giant cut scenes if they didn't have that.

Thing is, I really like the dialogue, I really like how the characters are developed and all that.
But can't the writers be a bit more succint and congruent?

I'm an OCD gamer, so I HAVE to watch every skit. Same goes for my girlfriend, who plays with me, and it really grinds our gears when we go through a lengthy cutscene that depicts
Yuri and Karol creating the new guild, Estelle naming it, Judith joining it, Repede being named honorary member
Right after the cutscene is over, we get a series of skits where
Estelle is all HAY GUYS I HEARD YOU'RE MAKING A GUILD and Judith's all CAN I JOIN TOO I AM MYSTERIOUS and then Karol's all SURE GUYS WE'LL MAKE A GUILD IT'LL BE AWESOME then Judith's all REPEDE IS A DOG AND CAN'T JOIN LET'S MAKE HIM HONORARY MEMBER then Repede's WOOF
Please, have a bit more timing.

So the only Tales game I have played is Symphonia (which I enjoyed quite a bit).

I've had Abyss in my goozex queue forever, but I think I'm next in line and should get it sometime in the next few months.

But. . . a co-worker mentioned he had played through Vesperia and was about to trade it in to gamestop towards Fable 2. After confirming that yes, he actually was going to sell them a game he bought for $60 a month ago for $25, I bought it from him right then and there.

So my question is: Should I wait until I get Abyss and play it or just skip Abyss and play Vesperia first? I know there's no story links, but I'm sure playing it in reverse order would be irritating with the graphic (and probably gameplay?) downgrade. There's also way more new games coming out than I can possibly play, so it's possible one would end up sitting on my shelf for a long long time anyway.

Also, if I fight any Giganto monsters before talking to Richard about them I lose access to that sidequest, right?
I didn't kill the one in Weasand Cados, and I almost got into a fight with that thing in Sands of Kogorh (on account of it being, well, GIGANTIC and hard to avoid) but so far I haven't fought them.
I can still talk to Richard about them, right?

Well, it depends what you like more in an RPG. You like RPGs for their story? Pick up Abyss. Think gameplay is more important? Start up Vesperia.

Abyss has some performance issues to contend with, being on the PS2 and all. It has the best story in the series to make up for it. Vesperia fixes all of the problems in Abyss, but the story meanders aimlessly for about 80% of the game.

Huh. Some people did a speedrun of Symphonia. Just under 8 hours... which seems... long. Especially with four people.
    http://speeddemosarchive.com/TalesOfSymphonia.html

From breezing over the comments, they don't sound like especially good players and probably weren't too good at completely locking down bosses. There's no way I'm watching that to nitpick through things though.

I don't remember how long Symphonia was, but even with New Game+ extras in Vesperia the fastest players finished it in roughly 8-9 hours. Vesperia let you carry over weapons and armor too, which I don't think Symphonia did.

Abyss suffers from some ridiculous repeating, and underlining of plot elements. When characters are talking twentieth time how this technology is sooo morally wrong, I started to skip dialogue. And loading is pain in the ass, even with using HDLoader. :)

Even with ToS2 coming within weeks, and having played through the first one twice (both around 70+ hour runs), I still don't feel the urgency to get ToS2. I'm not sure if it's that I'm still not done Vesperia, or that the whole Monster collect thing is bugging me.

Or that Lloyd has seemingly turned dark in this game.
