So, if I said "Wow, I feel like I'm totally dragging along in Tales of the Abyss, without enough Gald to buy equipment most times, let alone healing items, and by the way I'm trying to clear the miasma out of Akzeriuth or whatever it's called", what would you recommend? "Lern 2 fof n00b"? "Tough it out, the balance is wonky until later on?"
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Gald is scarce in abyss until you get a(blue) sephira so just tough it out for now. Learn to abuse free run instead if FoF. There's also an infinite gald exploit later in the game when you get certain titles.
Edit: also if you haven't sold all your old equipment there's a part coming up where equipment prices skyrocket and you can sell everything and come out with 3-400,000.
Holy crap, after nearly a year of playing on and off I've finally finished Abyss for the first time.
Didn't really dive too much into the extra stuff near the endgame as I got myself into the mindset of "I just really need to finish this" after the bit in the third quarter where you just end up running around for a bit of dialogue in what seemed like every town without really doing any fighting. Enjoyed the last few hours a lot though and was really fun overall. I'll probably go back to it in a few months to start a new FAQ guided playthrough.
Now that I've finished it I have either Vesperia or Xillia to start!

I always just grinded the arena for easy Gald in Abyss, iirc, since with certain equipment you essentially trivialize the entire thing. Ah man, Abyss, I still remember having to choose between Guy's two best costumes; Dashing Gent and ... whatever the Pilot one was, since both of them looked so awesome.
The blah blah blah is obviously the best Vesperia joke but even without that Rita is great. Chaining her spells into their altered forms with no cast time, hitting element weaknesses, chaining combos together...
@Wyborn and I tried recalling the plot of Vesperia, and these are the only details we can think up. (They don't include the main conflict.)
The fountain in the poor part of town started flooding.
This girl is probably the princess! Aha she is the princess! Oh wait she's not a princess, but people consider her the princess, so. (@Wyborn says he doesn't recall this at all.)
Yuri murdered a guy! That was really cool. He needed to be murdered. But then I think he may have regretted it at one point? UNCOOL.
Luke hits my love of conflicted-as-hell-knights.
Yuri and big boob lady end up as prisoner together (so @Wyborn says, but I don't remember this).
"I want to be myself!" (...this is when we stopped playing the game)
Oh, but Vesperia has the cooking mechanic! I miss that the most in Xillia.
What is keeping our attention in Xillia seems to be all the silly hats and accessories we can put on people. It makes a lot of scenes worth watching. Was that available as an option in Vesperia? I do remember some unusual outfits (the usual alternate costumes), but not really goofy accessories.
I remember not liking Sheena, but I haven't played Symphonia in aaaages so I may be mixing up her lackluster battle performance with her actual character.
But as I remember she wasn't empathetic or sympathetic to start with, what with being willing to throw a whole world under the bus by breaking the (apparently) natural order of things
She was just kind of an asshole, even if you could make an argument for her
And her design was super fanservicey in a game that I don't remember having a ton of that (well, for men - lots of eye candy for the ladies in that one)
I pretty much always just used Lloyd, Regal/Raine, Zelos, and Presea.

I can't really say I think Sheena is fanservicey. I mean I guess compared to the rest of the females in the game. But yeah, I don't think that design is going to get anyone hot and bothered unless they're 12 and don't have access to the internet.
That said...her personality wasn't that great and I hated her in combat so I rarely if ever used her.
We ended up with an almost perfect rhythm for juggling fools; Abyssion barely managed to get off an attack, and we killed him way lower than we should have been able to
My big disappointment with Jude is that he's kind of a shadow of the Arte-Linking machine that Regal was
Her *COSTUMES* were fanservicey but that's just how it was. Still not as bad as Natalia's Swimsuit or that biker outfit or whatever it was. Good god so much revealing cleavage.

Sheena never came across as an asshole to me. She does start out trying to kill you and doom your world to ruin and decay (not cool), but she's doing what she's doing to save her own world. By the end of the first act, she's agrees with your cause and helps out.
Oh no! I've never cared about collectable figures before, but I'm tempted to buy this. I love Symphonia and those are adorable. Even that box art looks beautiful.

ME TOO! It doesn't help that I love Symphonia 2 and its original characters with a bordering-on-strange passion. (Emiiiiiil ) And yes yes, I know lots of folks don't like Symphonia 2, but I friggin loved it. so bleh to the haters .
*ahem*
That said, Agggh. $100 is just so much more money than $40! So I'm still feeling conflicted. Especially considering that it's pretty much only the figures I care about ;_; . I mean, I don't like Tales music generally, so the CD doesn't mean much. And the book... well... I can't imagine there was much that happened between books 1-2 that wasn't covered in 2. And...wait... hold on... just noticed there's some symphonia 2 characters on the book cover.
............... goddammit I hate being poor with low impulse control .
EDIT- Okay. I'm weak. I pre-ordered. Well. This balances out not getting the Xillia special edition I guess. (I didn't like Vesperia, so I wasn't sure I would like Xillia, and I REALLY wasn't sure I would like Milla. Turns out I ended up loving both Xillia AND Milla. But eh, thems the breaks .)
Considering my avatar I guess it's no surprise I was refreshing the page constantly waiting for the opportunity to give my money for the Symphonia CE. Got burned on the Xillia CE due to distractions in life, never again. Goddamned kids needing to be fed and bathed all the time. Daddy has games to buy.
Oh and by the way, according to people at that other forum, the North American Symphonia CE also has a steelbook case for the game that isn't depicted in the shots of the Japanese CE.

Man...yeah, really going to have to get a PS3 before the end of the year.
Going to save some money and see if I can find a black friday deal next month.
Symphonia holds a special place in my heart that few other games can match, otherwise I'd ignore this CE without a second thought. Five figures for $60 is something I can justify to myself.
Based on what I've heard from people who played the Japanese version, Tales of Xillia 2 is super-dark, especially for a Tales game.
That would be fantastic. The series hasn't really clicked with me in a while, but I keep picking each new one up in hopes that it will. Going dark would totally work for me.

Xillia doesn't have Rita so it's not as good. It's still pretty good though.

Clearly Xillia has an advantage here
Though she was definitely better than Sheena, and I actually remember her unlike most of Vesperia's cast
The blah blah blah is obviously the best Vesperia joke but even without that Rita is great. Chaining her spells into their altered forms with no cast time, hitting element weaknesses, chaining combos together...
Fireball -> Eruption -> Violent Pain -> Bloody Howling -> Tractor Beam -> Gold Cat -> Thunder Blade.
NOTHING can survive that.

He's on a mission from God
Though of late we've given him the swordsman eyepatch and the fuzzy eyebrows. The world has changed him. He's a harder man now. A dangerous man.
Alvin gets Aviators and Flushed Cheeks, or sometimes the Miniature Tophat, because my wife is crazy
But... Sheena was awesome... Great voice actor, good character, nice design for her regular outfit...

I forgot Symphonia had alternative costumes.
In the context of Symphonia, her default costume was pretty racy too
A little cleavage ain't never hurt nobody.
But yeah, compared to say Colette or Raine who were both dressed pretty conservatively, maybe a bit.

We need to pick this game back up. Jsut need to get @SilverWind to put down Pokemon a bit this weekend...
On the plus side it will be easy to convince her to barrel-ass through the rest of the story so we can get back to catching 'em all
