I need help making a playlist for a restaurant

I just started a new job at the swankest place to eat in my town. Restaurant has been open for quite a long time and despite the economy has remained open and profitable. It is definitely the most expensive place to eat out where I live. The restaurant places emphasis on everything being cooked in house (which it is) and using the highest quality ingredients. For example on our menu we do not advertise the prices of steaks. It simply says market price and we relay actual price to the customer if they ask. The style of the restaurant is higher end contemporary.

Now all that said the music they play ranges from appropriately awesome to complete utter shit. They actually played the rickroll during dinner service. The music also bounces from something upbeat to something sad and dreary. I asked if I could create a playlist and hook my ipod up and I got the go ahead provided I could give them a playlist to look over beforehand. Every song I've chosen so far is tasteful and would fit the feel of the restaurant very well. I've also chosen mostly songs that are upbeat because the staff enjoys it a lot more. I'm not going to type out the whole list obviously but I will mention some artists I've chosen.

The Police, James Brown, Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Astud Gilberto, Beach Boys, Yello, The Beatles, The Marvelettes, Marvin Gaye + Tammi Terrel, Johnny Watson, Steely Dan, Michael Jackson, Jackson 5, Ronnie Hudson, Kool and the Gang, Dick Dale and the Deltones, Booker T and the MGs, The Champs, Aretha Franklin, Nancy Sinatra, The Kinks, Elvis Presley, Bobby Byrd, Bill Haley and the Comets, George Clinton, Bee Gees, The Chords, The Chordettes, Little Eva, Sam Cooke, The Coasters, The Contours.

Basically I am looking for stuff like what I've listed. Obviously I have a lot but I want to make a list that can easily outlast dinner service so from around 4 or 5PM to 10PM. So far my list has only about 65 songs on it total. I'd like to see more from 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 80s if I felt like it would fit with the restaurant.

Blackbeard can you name some specific tracks I can listen to? I really don't have time or willingness to listen to everything each of those groups or artists has to offer. I guess I'm not looking for necessarily top 100 or top 40 or pop tracks.

You could stick all of that into Slacker or Last.fm (or even Pandora) and see what pops out.

The list of bands is in no way definitive nor are the songs definitive, additionally many of these bands nave very few exceptions in terms of songs that aren't good. These are usually the more well known and best in my opinion, or some kind of combination or just what I could remember. Additionally there are a few albums of deep funk/soul from a lable called numero and all the eccemtric soul records would be perfect listening

Anyways you can just choose any song from alot of thse artists and they'd be good at least from their older albums

    ba-ba-ba-ba-bird bird, ba-bird's the word.

    but seriously:

Van Morrison - moon dance, brow eyed girl, etc.
Bob Marley and the Wailers, (pretty much any song that isn't about the atrocities committed against our darkly colored friends)
    Huey Lewis and the News
    Genesis
The Clash (have some classy-ish songs, I Fought the Law, Train in Vain, Should I Stay or Should I Go, Rock the Casbah, no really I knew these songs before rock band, honest)
    can be pretty good picks.

    Nouvelle Vague - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouvelle_Vague_(band)

I would think you could play entire cd's by this band. Super mellow bossa nova covers of 80's songs. All female singers; they have a semi-revolving group of members.

So far I've listened to a lot of what has been posted I've gotten another eight tracks for the list. I've been looking for two tracks for a while now not knowing they were both by Curtis Mayfield. The list is really shaping up though guys I just need five or ten more tracks.

How about Bob Marley? He has some songs that aren't too reggae-like.
