Let's talk about shooting! Rifles in particular, and pretty much anything that goes boom in general.

I want to build an M40A3. Buying one outright would cost over 4 grand.

gk010000000058.jpg

There's a guy at my work that's gonna sell me a remington 700 LTR with a Tasco Euro Elite 3x12 30mm scope for 1100, extra for a bipod. Sounds like a nice start, especially since it's only a couple years old and he's put less than 50 rounds through it. I'll start to piece the M40A3 together using this for a base.

First thing I want to get is the McMillan A4 Tactical stock put on it. :D

So, do you shoot? What do you shoot with? How far away are you from your target when you shoot? And if you live in the Bay Area in Cali, do you know any good long range firing ranges? Like, over 300 yards, at least.

I've never played airsoft before. It seems kinda silly to me, although some of the stuff you can get is pretty cool looking. I prefer paintball if I'm gonna actually shoot at someone. Less reliance on the honor system unless they're a cheating bastard that wipes paint. Then I just make sure to try to hit them in the neck.

one of my roommates in college was from Boerne, Texas and came with an array of weapons

so when my old CRT monitor finally bit it, I retired it with an SKS

we also celebrated Nov. 1 by taking our jack-o-lanterns to the range. we'd make dry ice bombs in sobe bottles (so they would hold) and put one in each pumpkin. if you could hit the bomb inside the pumpkin, the pumpkin would just fucking disappear.

That's freakin awesome! When I was stationed on the East coast I went to my buddy's house in florida for a couple of leave periods. He had a mosin-nagant that fired a 7.62x54 round that made every dog in three miles start barking. It would also beat the shit out of your shoulder.

We would also shoot cans of soda with hollow points out of his AK. I think we found maybe a quarter of the cans afterward.

Man, once you learn how to shoot at long range targets, it's so much fun! Nothing like checking your target after putting some rounds in at 500 yards and seeing them all in the black.

When I went to college, which was slightly pre-Columbine, you were not allowed to have weapons in your dorm room. I got shit about fencing equipment and basically had to tell them, "look it's not even sharp, it's athletic gear, it's less dangerous than a baseball bat, and FUCK YOU" to get left alone.

Did you guys have a fencing program at your school? And did they inspect your rooms or something? I hid all sorts of stuff in my barracks rooms, and we had inspections all the time. You couldn't hide it?

What kind of handgun do you want Shank? I'm going to try to get a glock .40 for my first, then I'd like a revolver. Not sure what kind yet.

I've shot a glock .40, and while it was a few years back there was some strange navy-issue thing about it. Shot like a dream, but it didn't really have a nice feel for me.

For home/personal security, probably some sort of compact double action .45 although I don't know enough about the different makes to really be discerning beyond pointless douchebaggery yet.

I don't know a lot about differences in gun caliber beyond the most general stuff (.45 ACP being more powerful than 9mm Parabellum, etc.) but Wikipedia has this to say:
    Wikipedia wrote:
The .40 S&W cartridge has become a huge success in the United States because, while possessing nearly identical accuracy[7], drift and drop, it adds 50% more energy over the 9 mm Parabellum with a more manageable recoil than the 10 mm Auto cartridge. In the rest of the world it has become a popular combat pistol shooting sports cartridge.[citation needed] With good JHP bullets in the more energetic loads (> 500 ft·lbf) the .40 S&W can create hydrostatic shock in human-sized living targets.[8]
    Wikipedia wrote:
Being a moderate-powered cartridge, the wide diameter of the .45 ACP bullets produces a decreased tendency to overpenetrate, which reduces the projectile's possibility of passing through the intended target with enough velocity to injure another person. The combination of stopping power and controlled penetration makes the .45 ACP practical for police use, although numerous issues, including the resulting decrease in magazine capacity and the larger size and weight of pistols chambered in this caliber, have led more police departments in the USA to adopt sidearms in 9x19mm, .40 S&W, and .357 SIG.[6] Many US tactical police units still utilize the .45 pistol round, including the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team.[7][8][9] While high capacity firearms are available in .45 ACP, the greater length and diameter of the .45 ACP means that the grip of the pistol must be longer and wider than the grip of a comparable pistol of a smaller caliber; this increase in grip size can make the pistol difficult to use for shooters with smaller hands.

also, my dad has a .40 S&W compact and it has a very manageable kick, even for my skinny girl-arms. 9mm (despite being a cheap round to buy) has a reputation for having trouble bringing down even unarmored opponents and the .45 has a supposedly heavy recoil in smaller pistols.

Yeah, I like the .40 because its still got stopping power without the size increase that 45's do. And the magazine capacity. What is your specific model Stale?

    yeah I've never fired one

but it seems to me that a .45 micro-compact would still have quite a heavy recoil due to the light weight of the gun and the kick of the cartridge

I've got a 4-10, the all important Ruger 10/22 and an SA xD .45 that serves as my primary carry. I'd like to get a .38 Model 36 or a nice little kel-tec 9mm or PPK to serve as a pocket gun/backup. I also plan to get this year a Mosin-Nagant M44 (So cheap! Like a 100 bucks for an amazing rifle!) and a good little CZ 75B pistol or a CZ 40B pistol if I can find one.

On TheHighRoad, the gun forum I post at, everyone recommends these krinker kits for the 10/22 and I really want to build one of these days. And build an M4 as well.

Hey stale, how far do you usually shoot from? 10, 20 yards or more?
H5 for paintball! It is quite a bit more expensive, and yes, it does usually require more time than airsoft. It is so much more satisfying I would think watching someone cringe while paint explodes all over them than just seeing them cringe.

Longbaugh, the .40 would be more for home defense, God forbid, while the revolver and the rifle are for fun.

Screw it, the more the merrier! Educate us on the shootenings with your bow and arrow. can you hit a breath mint thrown in the air?

start at 10, move to 20. it's considerably more difficult to keep a good group at 30 with a 45. not impossible at all, just more frustrating when you keep getting 1.2"

.45 is actually a very moderate recoil round--it has a different sort of kick to it.

A 9mm is more of a cap gun--a bit like a yappy dog.

    A .40 is a sharp bite upwards

a .45 is like a strong but even push back but I find it very comfortable.

Seeing my father shoot a pistol is the most terrifying thing in the world.

This is a man who sells arms for a living, has been shooting longer than most people have been driving and excels at everything that he does.

So he walks up to the line, draws the pistol up, presses the trigger, waits, presses the trigger, etc for about twenty seconds and at 35 yards he's punched what looks like a solid hole through the target's head.

And he just looks over and tosses me a huge wink. I'm fairly certain he's killed someone at some point in his life.
