There is a Lovikov technique for jumping to a knocked down and killing them

you really should buy all the memories as soon as you can. they really improve the game, for the most part. i took an hour and just found all of the balls. They show up on your minimap and people on gamefaqs have made maps to make it even easier to find them.

This head jumping technique is basically a charged low sword attack.

I'm not sure how, but there must be some sort of short cut where Travis doesn't need to charge his beam katana for it. Give it a try next time, the animation is exactly the same.

Overcharging your deathblows is nice for decapitating multiple people with a single blow.

For sliding the bick, twist the wiimote in the direction you want to turn: slide left, twist left.

The head jumping flip decapitation is part of a combo with the last sword, from the low stance (I think). It's AWESOME, but the low stance also leads to that 'please kill me now' fruity sword twirl to a stab behind the back' that always gets you clobbered so I almost never saw it.

The overworld is also supposed to be a critique of sandbox games that offer the illusion of non-linearity and freedom, when in reality nothing you do in the game actually affects the progress of the story in any meaningful way beyond what the developers intended.

Killer7 did the same thing with games like Resident Evil by basically making it a rail shooter. Either by design or by the very limitations of the medium, true freedom of exploration is an illusion, because progress is still governed by the designs of the programmers. And there's also the bit where every significant puzzle piece is simply an "object", to highly the total arbitrariness of that kind of puzzle solving.

    I had this theory too.

But - and know that No More Heroes is one of my favorite games, and I consider it an artistic and interactive achievement - the overworld is such a piece of dogshit, I don't care for the political commentary. Such a thing should not, in my opinion, require interactivity to convey. It's certainly an option, a bold one, and if true I give him some degree of "props" as it were, but FUCK THAT FUCKING PIECE OF FUCK OVERWORLD.

There were a few different shirts released in Japan only, in tiny little Japanese nerd sizes, but aside from that there has not been anything. Travis does have a stinking beer shirt, so you could probably just wear a beer shirt I guess.

Oh my god, what, there was NMH clothing? I mean, oh god. wow. I don't know if I could do the Travis Touchdown look, but some of the stuff he had was awesome.

Lets just put how to do the darkslide (I always did the Hadoken input right as/after I blocked, worked fine for me), bike slide, and overcharge death blows in all ops from now on.

Btw, you can mix beat attacks in with your combo, increasing chance to stun. And that move where he jumped over and cut the guys headoff was probably when she wasn't locked on. He has a whole 'nother moveset when he's not locked on (but he doesn't block....)

Edit: I rocked the blue magical girl with the witch hat from the anime for most of my playthrough; don't know why, but I loved that thing.

The only shirt I used was "Don't Touch My Beard" for a long time, I didn't even bother trying to find another one.

Until one glorious evening, when I was furiously trying to Gold that last Pizza Butt C.E.O. mission, and in my angry travels back and forth across the world map I stumbled upon some hapless dumpster, whose side I did kick with all my might, and LO! The t-shirt to end all t-shirts!

I switched at random between the Fencing Team, Giant Squid, and 'You say Psycho like its a bad thing' T-shirts during my playthrough. I mainly only swapped before Rank fights, and after coming back from hitting dumpsters, since Travis apparently has some thing about immediately putting on a T-shirt that he just pulled out of a dumpster behind a used car lot. I don't want to even consider what he likely smelled like.

He attacks faster and without stopping when hes not locked on, the combo can pretty much go on forever. But... he cant block when not locked on which can be problematic when fighting a lot of baddies, so it sort of trades off.

Yeah the line of excusing shittiness as art is something that destroyed traditional art in the Worhol era, and I'll be damned if I let videogames get away with it

But I honestly found the overworld no more sparse or boring than in any given Legend of Zelda game.

Your ride comes to you from anywhere if you just call it, there are treasure chests and other upgrades hidden all over the place, you can mow grass for money

If there had been random dudes trying to attack you constantly, it would have been pretty much the same.

Do they eventually show this stuff later on, or is the back story just that paragraph in the manual?
In the American version it is, apparently, just a paragraph in the manual. In the Japanese and PAL versions, it's a comic in the manual.

The comic didn't really explain much either. Here is Travis, he is cool, he does sucky jobs and sometimes kills people, oh and he has a boner when he wakes up in the morning. That about sums it up.

The original argument sucked destroyman's laser-wang anyways.

Sandboxy action games have never tried overly hard to make the player think they're impacting the world or storyline in any grand way; they exist almost entirely to dick around in. They let you explore the gameplay and controls in a setting not constrained by objectives or time limits.

If you're not willing to fault Suda for his occasional design flaws, at least have the faith to believe he reserves his commentary for more relevant shit than this.

Edit: I might - might - be willing to believe the argument that Santa Destroy's flatness and the facelessness of its denizens was supposed to emphasize Travis' isolation. None of that overworld as a commentary on overworlds bullshit though.

I left Travis shirtless the entire game. That's the way to go.

I can do without the "Overworld as commentary" thing. Throughout the game, I constantly thought that I'd enjoy it a lot more if it were broken up into simple levels like an 8-bit game with cinemas in between. It would have been more brisk and it would be easy enough to put the wortwhile aspects of the overworld (the upgrades, the clothing) into the levels themselves.

I'll still play the sequel even if it has the exact same overworld, of course. This game has maybe the most satisfying combat I've seen in a non-fighting game since Streets of Rage. Waving the Wii-mote in the direction of your killing blow is, frankly, one of the best uses of motion control this gen. It helps that the additional swords you buy really feel like upgrades. I still almost feel like upgrading to the four-pronged sword breaks the game, because after that pretty much nothing could touch me; and of course the final sword you get is just insane.

I always rocked the 'I <3 Chainsaw' t-shirt and the [strike]paint[/strike] blood splattered jeans. Because that's just too damn cool.

Also in related news, I demand a beam chainsaw in NMH2.

[Edit] The final sword completely breaks the game, and I can sum up the reason in two words: infinite battery. As soon as you buy that sucker you can block indefinitely without having to run off to a corner and wank around while your enemies rip you apart. It removes the biggest vulnerability you have in the game completely and makes boss fights MUCH easier.

It also looks more ridiculously awesome. The final sword is better in my experience, but I sure liked the crazy 5-blade version more.

Also, in terms of NMH in-game items that should be available in real life, I would LOVE to get my hands on a copy of the poster in Travis's bathroom. That thing is kickass.

I am enjoying the crazy speed of the final sword, but starting new game + on bitter, many of the later assassination missions (like 18, assassinate the pizza guy in the parkade) are just impossible because I don't do enough damage to the MOBS of people and can't block them ALL, then they knock me down and stop the shit out of me in under 2 seconds. The massive sword does far more damage.

    Duh.

The overworld never bothered me. I would go from GTA to NMH and need to adjust but after a few minutes I didn't notice. I only crashed my bike a couple times, I loved the music of it and I found some of the jobs to be fun. I did the fill gas one a ton to get the money for fights and upgrades. If I was getting frustrated with the mini-game grind, I just turned it off. Next time I picked it up I didn't care.
