This looks a lot more like DQVIII than I was expecting.
- A blend of anime-style cutscenes and cel-shaded gameplay footage. It's obviously hard to tell from the quality of this vid but it looks really fluid and the art style looks really nice.
- Battles take a lot of queues from DQVIII and alternate between fully animated enemies and actually showing your party.
- Gear is still equipped by drag-and-drop and actually shows on each character—looks like four-player parties.
- It looks like ... no random battles! Enemies visible on the field.
That is absurdly pretty for a DS game.
And no random battles yes
What caught my eye is that when running around in towns and the overworld, it looks like you have a similar camera angle and depth of field as DQVIII. I was a bit worried that going to DS would diminish some of that feeling of exploring a giant world that you got in the PS2 game, but this suggests that feeling of scope is still there.
And I'm hoping that the one slime encounter shown in the trailer is indicative of no random battles. Thinking about it, it could be some kind of scenario event.
Of course, I'm torn... part of me wishes the DQ series would actually change much more significantly with the times, but part of me feels the old-school feel is part of the charm.
They went back to having turn-based combat from the initial proposals, so they're still being pretty old-school, surely?
It hasn't turned into Crystal Chronicles just yet.
That's what I meant, DQ is still pretty damn old-school, and part of me wishes it would advance a little more than it has.
Same here. It'd be nice to see some evolution in the gameplay instead of stagnation, but, oh well. No random battles, that's pretty new for DQ, right? For something that's been unchanged for this long, it's like a shark sprouting arms.
And it sure looks goddamn pretty!
Almost too pretty. I don't trust them! Something's up, man.
To me, Dragon Quest is like AC/DC in that they've got the formula down so pat that they can keep cranking out similar stuff game after game, album after album, and I wouldn't want them to change too much. I look to other franchises when I'm in the mood for progressive JRPGs—FFs change every single game, and things like TWEWY are excellent—but finding honest-to-God turn-based RPGs is actually kind of difficult nowadays, so I'm somewhat glad DQIX is staying turn-based.
think of the gameplay and features of DQ like the makings of a book. Books are still a cover, and pages of paper inside. and the gameplay of DQ doesn't really change much.
the stories inside both do change, and that's what I like more out of them.

Have you ever played DQ Monsters: Joker? It had about the same scope of DQVIII as well. IX doesn't look too far off from it.

I've picked it up and put it down dozens of times in stores. I'm curious about it, and having a party of monsters in battle appeals to me more than the 1v1 setup of Pokemon, but I've just never pulled the trigger on it.

Also it's got no random battles like you were just gushing over. :P
Well, don't get it for the story, but if you like lots and lots of fighting and "breeding" monsters and getting a ton of Dragon Quest monsters, plus bosses, then it's awesome.
DQ9 looks pretty nice from that video. I'm glad they switched it back to traditional DQ gameplay from what they were saying it was going to be before. I wouldn't have liked that as much.
Why's everyone so excited about no random battles? You guys must really suck at RPGs if that's a big draw for you. :P
If ypou give me a world to explore, I prefer to be able to explore it without fighting unless I want to
That's why they always include a Repel spell or "no encounter" equipment. I mean I usually have a harder time exploring with visible monsters. Oh crap, I can't go that way because there's a big monster over there, darn I wanted to go this way but now I have to wait for the guys to run out of my path, etc. You can't feel like you can just walk wherever.

Difference is that this will let you explore freely from the start instead of near the end of the game when you normally get the no encounters stuff.

Yup. It gives you the SENSE of freedom without actually having freedom. You're still limited to where you can go by encounter strength. Honestly, there's really nothing wrong with random battles 99% of the time.

Don't do it. I tried really hard to enjoy it, but it's not all that fun.
That game was way too beautiful to be on a DS. Actually, I'm thinking that it had a huge flood of really nice animation scenes, so they must have been able to work miracles to compress that much video, assuming it all can fit onto the little cartridges. This thread does make me want to give DQ Joker a better look though. DQ IV sure did a good job of reigniting a Dragon Quest flame in me

Dang dude, I thought you were cool.
I had a blast and I barely beat the thing, much less did all the extra content, which I still really want to do someday. Breeding and equipping your army of three is fantastic.
DQ9 looks awesome, although I'm annoyed that the vast majority of that trailer were cutscenes that probably aren't even in the game rather than actual gameplay footage.
Oh and thanks for reminding me about DQ:Monsters Joker. The price is down to a reasonable amount on goozex and there's a full package up for grabs so I'm going to put it in my active request list and see what happens. I loved the gameboy game back in the day so here's hoping the new one is just as enjoyable (the latest Pokemon didn't do it for me).

It's at least 10x as good as any Pokemon game I've ever played. (Disclaimer: I've only ever played one Pokemon game and I wasn't impressed, and I kind of hate Pokemon in general.)

Wait. I'm still cool Spork!
I got about 4 or 5 hours into it. I'm just not into the monster collecting thing anymore. I couldn't even play pokemon passed 10 hours.

After not seeing it for so long, it looks extra amazing.

Can not wait for this. I may import the Japanese version if it comes with a rough english translation like 4 did.

Still, if those are DS shots they look amazing. Can't wait to see this in action.

Not this.
Not now.
This is going to make me dust off my old copy of DQ VIII and finish it.
It's not for me, I hate feeling obligated to dodge and flee from the little guys constantly.
Has nothing to do with sucking, and everything to do with it just not being fun.

This would be even better, but less likely

Well, except for certain games with way too high encounter rates, but I can only think of one of those off the top of my head.
There was an outcry and they went back to turn-based.
You have no idea how fanatical the Japanese are about Dragon Quest.
